Return to X-Play's Holiday Buyers Guide 2010

2010 has been a very interesting year for the PlayStation 3. The slate of games ranged from colossal threequels to ambitious original IPs to long, long, long awaited racing games that rhyme with Fran Burismo. No matter what your taste in games, there was definitely something for everyone this year, and to prove it, let’s take a look at our PS3 Holiday Gift Guide.

But first, let's take a look at X-Play's picks for games to pick up on the PlayStation 3 this holiday season.

This Week's New Releases: God of War III, Dragon Age: Awakening, Metro 2033

God of War III

Kratos made his triumphant and brutal next-gen debut in Sony Santa Monica’s latest and greatest diety-slaying installment in its critically acclaimed, and oft imitated, action franchise. There is certainly nothing subtle about the God of War series; it’s big, brash, violent, and not stingy when it comes to glorifying the female anatomy. God of War III took the scope and action the series is known for and cranked them up to absurd levels. When it comes to pure adrenaline-fueled gaming, nothing does the job quite like GOWIII.

Heavy Rain

Quantic Dream set out to create an experience unlike anything players (especially those who missed out on Fahrenheit) had ever seen. While it played more like an interactive movie, this moody and tense thriller managed to deliver some of the most memorable and talked about moments of the year. It certainly isn’t for all palates, but for those willing to give themselves over to it, Heavy Rain is one of those games that you will never forget.

Holiday Gift Guide: PS3

MLB 10: The Show

Hands down the greatest baseball game ever made, this year’s installment in Sony’s long running baseball franchise is a baseball lover’s dream come true. Not only does it feature the smoothest and most believable animations to be found in a baseball game, but it also has more depth than the Giants' bullpen. Also, the Road to the Show is one of the most satisfying and grueling experiences in any genre of game, let alone sports games. If you own a PS3 and you like baseball, you need to own this game.

ModNation Racers

ModNation Racers

It’s out of admiration and deep love that I continue to refer to United Front Games’ superb kart racing game as LittleBigPlanet on wheels, because it brings with it a true sense of passion on behalf of its developers. Everything from the art direction to the character and kart designs to the announcers’ hilarious banter just oozes care and attention. Throw in the ability to endlessly create and customize vehicles and tracks and you have a recipe for one unbeatable racing title.

E3 2010: The Sly Collection PS3 Screenshots

The Sly Collection

Sony keeps the HD remastered collection train rolling with this three-game pack that brings Sucker Punch Productions’ classic platforming titles to modern audiences in glorious HD and 3D for those so inclined. If you missed out on any of these beloved action-adventure titles, or if you just feel like revisiting them after all these years, you simply can’t go wrong with this nostalgia-filled collection.

Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5

Polyphony Digital’s perennial no-show of a racing title has finally, after just shy of a decade, landed on the PS3, and for racing fans, it marks the end of a painful era of delays and release date jokes and the beginning of an new era in racing games. Hundreds of gorgeously rendered cars, tons of events and challenges, absurdly deep career modes, and more are sure to keep racing fans busy for a long time (aka how long you'll have to wait for GT6).

MAG

MAG

Virtual warfare has never been quite as massive as it is in Zipper Interactive’s 256-player support multiplayer shooter MAG. Being able to engage in online battles of this scale is something no shooter fan should miss, and even though your enjoyment is tied directly to how your teammates behave, there’s big fun to be had here.

Sony Ships 1 Million PlayStation Move Units To North And Latin America

PlayStation Move

Sony’s HD answer to the Wii might not be as revolutionary as Nintendo’s motion controlled system, but the Move brings with it a certain level of precision and graphical quality not available on other consoles. While the Move library leaves a lot to be desired at this point, two clear standouts are the compilation title Sports Champions and the spatial puzzler Tumble. Both games do a good job of showing off the Move’s technical potential, and should provide enough enjoyment to hold you over until the second wave of titles start trickling out.

Ballistic

The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves/God of War III (Paper Back $65.00, Special Edition $129.00, Limited Folio Edition $300.00)

Ballistic Publishing has done an absolutely spectacular job of compiling tons of stunning pieces of artwork, concept art, 3D models, sketches, and more and presenting them in these two gorgeous collections. The art itself is stunning enough, but the fact that the Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica artists share their experiences, methodologies, and insights with regards to bringing their respective game worlds to life makes these books must owns for any aspiring game artist or avid lover of game art.
