The Hardcore Gamers Guide 2010By Stephen Johnson - Posted Nov 19, 2010
If you drew the name of a gamer with hardcore Suicidal Tendencies in your office's secret Santa, don't despair: The games listed below should more than adequately max out his or her hardcore-meter... just make sure they don't already own them. Hardcore gamers aren't exactly known for waiting around for holidays to try out a new game.
Let's first take a look at some of the premier shooters to come out in 2010, as recommended by X-Play.
New Vegas features a mode called hardcore, which adds the difficulty of finding food, water, and places to sleep to the already ardous New Vegas Wasteland survival experience. But maybe that’s not hardcore enough for the person you’re buying the gift for. If so, tell him to turn off the HUD completely and play with no automated PIP Boy assistance. That'll teach 'em.
No game genre is as hardcore as realistic war simulators, and this one (set on Legendary, of course) should be more than enough for the hardcore gamer in your life. The single-player is one thing, but reaching Prestige in multiplayer should be more than hard enough.
StarCraft players online do not eff around. If you have a gaming fan who needs to be humbled, this is the game to do it. Not only does it take cat-like reflexes, one must also be smart and tactical to succeed. If your giftee is really hardcore, though, he needs to play some of the top Korean StarCraft 2-heads.
Any game that requires a specific peripheral to master is hardcore. While my skills at Street Fighter end at mashing a bunch of buttons and praying for a miracle, I understand there are people who have mastered the intricacies of fighting games, and there's no better hardcore forum to employ those skills than the fast-motion ballet known as Street Fighter IV.
Time for a break to talk about some of the best in multiplayer gaming this year, with X-Play's Multiplayer Madness.
Many “real” gamers don’t like sports games because they don’t like sports, but Madden is deep. Very deep. Even casual online play requires an encyclopedic knowledge of football, as well as a wide-receiver’s awareness and dexterity – in other words, Madden is hardcore. The game's franchise mode allows you to extend your gaming over many, many seasons, too, so it's a gift that keeps giving.
There is no one more hardcore than a hardcore Bejeweled player. Just try to get your mom to stop playing some night, and see what I mean. And now that this long awaited threequel is inbound, you should probably start adjusting for a much more solitary life. We're sorry.
(With Pro Guitar): There is no gaming experience in all of video game history as challenging as playing Rock Band 3 on expert with a pro guitar. None. Playing the guitar is just a hard thing to do, and by mirroring the actual notes, your gaming pal will learn just how 'core non-gaming pursuits can be.
