Dead or Alive: Dimensions Hands-On GDC Preview

By Nikole Zivalich - Posted Mar 11, 2011

Dead of Alive Dimensions

Dead or Alive: Dimensions is one of fighting games heading to the 3DS during the console's "launch window." Twenty-five characters have been confirmed so far but more are expected to be revealed. Since fighting games have hardcore fans, and the Nintendo 3DS will have a large base of casual gamers, Tecmo made sure its game offered features for both types of gamers.

The bottom touch-screen can be set-up to show special combo moves ("touch moves"), and with the tap of the stylus, your character can perform the moves without you actually hitting any of the required buttons. I couldn't help but think this would make the game unbalanced. I was assured, however, that this option could be turned off, and just as simply as I could activate the screen, I could change it to a screen that tells me stats. Casual gamers can have their cheat sheet and hardcore gamers can have their hit ratios.

Chronicle Mode was designed to familiarize new gamers with the back-stories of the game's characters. It will serve as Dimension's story mode and will include key moments from all the prior Dead or Alive games. It will acquaint new gamers with the rich history of the Dead or Alive Tournament. Yes, I'm being serious. Both casual and hardcore gamers can appreciate this mode, as it’s also where most of the game’s combat takes place.

The 3DS' SteetPass feature will allow you to trade ghost data with a friend, or a nearby stranger. Your fighting patterns, if you block more or rely on fast punches, is stored and sent to other gamers. They can then fight a clone of you.

Throughout the different modes, players will unlock costumes and trophies. The trophies can be placed in different settings where you'll be able to zoom in and take snap-shots. The snap-shots can be shared with the StreetPass feature. I can only assume the mode is a nod to Dead or Alive: Paradise.

And to answer the questions I know you're too polite to ask, no the boobs don't jiggle in 3D, and Tecmo Koei has no plans to bring DoA: Extreme Volleyball to the 3DS. I asked.
