Resident Evil Mercenaries

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is one of Capcom's upcoming 3DS games that is set to come out this summer or in Nintendo's "launch window." The Mercenaries 3D is meant to be a celebration of the past 15 years of Resident Evil. In hopes of satisfying both loyal Resident Evil fans and more casual 3DS gamers, the game offers familiar characters with arcade style gameplay modes. Gamers will be able to play as Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Jack Krauser, Hunk, and Leon Kennedy.

I recently got some hands-on time with the game while at GDC. The game, or rather what we know about the game so far, is a compilation of Mercenaries Modes from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. There will be 30 levels in the final build. The point of this mode is to kill as many enemies as possible while racking up points. New to the series is the ability to switch from third-person to first-person.

The level I played was called Village; it was full of Red Monks from Resident Evil 4. The monks weren't overly aggressive, but when I got close, they attacked. I assumed they weren’t coming after me all at once to make the demo more accessible. Although, it did take several shots to bring one monk down. The real focal point of this demo was to show off shooting while moving, and, yes, it actually works! Imagine that. You hold down the shoulder buttons to sprint past zombies or opponents, all the while unloading on them. It's a good feeling.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
felt like a RE game. I got nervous and began to panic when I ran out of ammo; a  familiar feeling whenever I play a Resident Evil game. The controls are fairly simple, and the only real adjustment will come with holding a 3DS. The R button is for aiming, X is to shoot, Y is your action button and B is for an item. Aiming with the circle pad took me a few minutes to get the hang of, but to be fair, those red monks are distracting.

Resident Evil Mercenaries

Based on what I saw, The Mercenaries 3D will be a great game to pick and up play as an arcade experience with a series of quick matches. However, it doesn't seem like it will have a story mode that would keep gamers playing for a long time. As a side-note, graphically speaking, The Mercenaries is one of the best looking 3DS games I've seen.

What caught my eye was the fact you ca actually "move and shoot" I hope that this new addition doesn't take too much away from the series, thought I have been wondering for a while what that would be like and how it would effect the over-all awesomeness that has come to be "The Resident Evil series"

I was hoping for slightly better graphics, but so long as what they stuck with doesn't affect the game too much, should be an issue, I hope there are enough goodies in the game to distract from the less polished gampeplay graphics

It could be good preperation for "Resident Evil: Revelations".

I wonder if there will be any way to compare your scores. I would assume so, that would be the main reason to keep playing it. Geometry Wars with Zombies haha.
