G4’S “CODE MONKEYS” SKEWERS THE GOLDEN AGE OF VIDEOGAMES AND TECHNOLOGY IN CLASSIC, 8-BIT STYLE – SERIES PREMIERES JULY 11 AT 9 P.M.
Tech Titans Including Steve Wozniak, David Jaffe and Nolan Bushnell Among Special Guests Providing Voices for the Twisted New Animated Series from Creator Adam de la Peña (“Minoriteam,” “Crank Yankers,” “The Man Show”)
LOS ANGELES, June 26, 2007 — The secret history of videogames is exposed in the world premiere of “Code Monkeys,” an animated comedy of 8-bit proportions. From the warped mind of creator Adam de la Peña (“Minoriteam,” “Crank Yankers,” “The Man Show”), “Code Monkeys” is a rowdy celebration and biting parody of videogame, technology and pop culture. The satire, which is produced by de la Peña’s Monkey Wrangler Productions, collides with reality as several of the most iconic tech and gaming personalities even lend their voices for special guest “appearances,” including Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak and Atari founder Nolan Bushnell. “Code Monkeys” premieres with back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, July 11 starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, only on G4.
“Code Monkeys” is set in the early 1980s and follows the misadventures at GameAvision, a videogame company where the employees spend as much time creating havoc as they do producing interactive entertainment. When a crazed oil tycoon without any videogame experience buys the company, the formerly freewheeling GameAvision is turned upside-down. As if negotiating a ridiculous corporate culture weren’t difficult enough, the animated cast finds themselves living in a videogame world, where they’re forced to deal with some of the most infamous scenarios in gaming.
"’Code Monkeys’ shows my parents that I did not waste my life playing video games. I wasted my life in over ways, like drinking and going to college,” said de la Peña. "Every episode will include video game references, as well as guest stars from the past and future of gaming.”
Anybody who has picked up a videogame controller or turned on a computer any time in the last 30 years will appreciate the non-stop videogame parodies and tongue-in-cheek tech references, but early videogames serve as more than point of reference for the series. “Code Monkeys” distinctive style of animation is directly inspired by the early days of electronic entertainment, when the ability to display single pixels represented the height of graphic achievement. Each episode looks and sounds like an old-school videogame, complete with an onscreen status bar.
“‘Code Monkeys’ is the first animated comedy made specifically for today’s Xbox/iPod/YouTube generation and could only have come from a network that truly appreciates videogames and technology,” said Neal Tiles, President, G4. “Whether they’re a gamer or not, the videogame and technology references in ‘Code Monkeys’ are something every guy will enjoy.”
Visitors to G4’s “Code Monkeys” site will be able to continue the retro-gaming experience with interactive features that suck viewers even deeper into the series’ pixilated world. Viewers can download exclusive content including ringtones, wallpapers and even play some of the games created by the GameAvision team. In addition, G4TV.com’s exclusive “Code Monkeys” content includes interviews with celebrity guests and deleted scenes with DVD-style commentary from Adam de la Pena. Clips and highlights will be available via podcast, video on demand and online at http://www.g4tv.com/codemonkeys.
Fans who can’t wait for the premiere on July 11 will have opportunity to catch an online sneak-peek of the new series prior to its first airing on G4. Starting on Wednesday, June 27, Break.com, the leading online entertainment channel for men, will air the first episode of “Code Monkeys.” The online video will only be available until July 11.
