Danger Research Hiptop - thumbCellphone/PDA hybrid devices are appearing en masse to take advantage of speedy next-generation wireless data networks. Unfortunately the services these networks provide are too expensive, preventing the average consumer from making full use of a hybrid's capabilities. But for the die-hard mobile user, "Fresh Gear" tested the latest batch of cellphone/PDA hybrids. Tune in to see the best.

What is a hybrid?

The first generation of these multiuse devices consisted of cellphones with basic PDA functionality. An all-in-one cellphone/PDA can be handy, but the device's extra bulk provides little payoff without fully using data services. With higher-speed data networks in place, these newer hybrids handle much more than just voice and personal information management (PIM) functions. Whether through telephony, instant messaging (IM), email, or surfing the Web wirelessly, a hybrid should deliver a simple and convenient experience.

Hybrids run either Palm or Pocket PC, but the most impressive device we found uses a proprietary OS from Danger.
