Round 1 - Wall, NJ
Episode #5005
Welcome to Formula D's first competitive event of 2005 at the Wall Speedway in Wall, New Jersey, where both seeded (pro) and unseeded (amateur) drivers came to show off their stuff on the track. The weather appeared sunny, but the temperature was chilly for spring, and the small, steep track promised lots of challenges for the day ahead. With a track half the size of most tracks used for drifting, the Wall Speedway was then shaped into a figure 8 racing line for drivers to follow. However, with the dangerous 35° incline, many drivers who would were expected to easily crack into the top ranks didn't, and many underdogs did.
Drivers register in advance online and show up to the event and go through a series of qualifying rounds the day before the event. Both pros and amateurs are judged based on the speed and driving line, angle, and showmanship of their run. The top 32 qualifiers then each ran solo runs to see who would make the top 16. After the top 16 is established, drivers are paired off for head-to-head tandem battles, where each pair of drivers faces off against each other in a pair of runs and the winner advances to the next round. |
