Sony's Coming 'Home' This Year
Posted By: John Manalang - Monday, August 25, 2008 7:50 AM

As Home finishes off the final days of its closed beta test, the game's producer Martijn Van der Meulen said to IGN that Sony's eagerly awaited community network service will be arriving this year, "100 percent" guaranteed.

Previously, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai said that "it doesn't matter when we launch [Home]", after stating Sony's decision to delay the service twice. According to Hirai's previous statement, Home's launch would fall under a "reasonable timeframe", and with Van der Meulen's guarantee, it looks like this year's reasonable enough.

Do you think it's about time Sony launches their promising service, or have you lost interest? Let us know what you think. Home is an exclusive, avatar-populated network service for the Playstation 3.

Hmmm, interesting. I bet it'll come out on November or so. But arguably before the holidays...

As a real PS3 owner and not some X-douche troll, I am very excited about Home. It's going to be really cool and I can't wait...

F home socom all day baby

Posted by Thundercracker - Tuesday, August 26, 2008 6:14 AM

i just picture 40 male avatars all hitting on the one female avatar

Posted by mercisan - Tuesday, August 26, 2008 2:01 AM
I will probably check some other people's HOME, but I won't put anything into mine. I can't spend the time. I'd rather spend my time playing a game's story mode.

I think the biggest turn off for me is that it seems too teenage-like. I'm not into teenage fashion or any of their interests. But we'll see. Don't knock it till you've tried it, I guess.

Posted by Neverrain - Tuesday, August 26, 2008 1:30 AM
Well I can't really say it's about time because that time hasn't come yet. But I will say this, I don't care about the wait. If Sony felt it wasn't ready yet, well Kudos to them for not rushing it out just top competition. That's why PS3 came out later than Xbox 360, because they wanted to get it right. Hows that for showing some humility Xbox supporters? Because I know you trolls are reading this I'm going to just keep waiting and and checking out hot games and the PSN. Nah, it's late. I just go Fold some Proteins, that's a PS3 thing, yall wouldn't understand.

Posted by Tactless_Ninja - Tuesday, August 26, 2008 1:19 AM
Sony needs to fix my damn headset compatibility issues first. I want to chat damnit without having to freakin re-register the damn thing every time. Home comes in second to that. *RAGE*

Posted by 87Stang92 - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:56 PM
"quit talking about it even though it hasnt even come out yet." my bad for got the "though" word in my first coment... but that's all i gotta say... and i can't wait till this gets out...that's all i gotta say.

Posted by 87Stang92 - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:54 PM
And for some ps3 owners, you dont neccessarily "NEED" to play this game if you dont want to, no one's making you either, its ment for those who are intrested into playing Simlation games like "Home" or "The Sims 1or2". so if you dont like it, then just keep your mouth shut and dont worry bout it, just get your mind back to playing games or your "Real" life stuff.

Posted by 87Stang92 - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:52 PM
OMG U GUYS!!! You need to shut up! "Home" hasnt even came out yet and you guys are saying horrible stuff and negative comments and still talking bout it when it's not coming out till late this fall and #1 its not like THE SIMS. in the sims, you dont meet online ppl, only ppl that the Maxis Production created.#2 YOU NEED TO BE PATIENT, quit talking about it even though it even out yet. And for those who arent the ps3 owners, back off! Quit talking bad about sony, its not that important or neccessary for you to make comments like that. Plus, i dont really care if you have to pay 50 bucks a year. thats just sad when you are feeling sorry for yourself that you have to pay 50 dollars for the whole year of playing online? All i have to say is - WOW.
For those who are the 360 owners, back off from sony if you think this is dumb, i personally think that you are just feeling sorry for yourself that you dont own a ps3, or your just being a total jerk.

Bottom line for me is If it is gonna be FREE, take as long as you need.

blah blah blah....the battle rages on g4 forums. ps3 vs 360. getting kinda stale now guys. geez.

There closing PSN down tommorrow for something. I wonder if it has anything to do with HOME.

"This Year" ? so it could be released on Aug-25-09 ?

Posted by coolperson(SSGG) - Monday, August 25, 2008 7:12 PM
Home kinda looks like a graphically updated version of Second Life to me. Do you have to pay a subscription for it? Because if so that's a ripoff.

Posted by kinghunter64 - Monday, August 25, 2008 7:10 PM
If you arn't exctited for this then you suck or your just an xbot.

Posted by silverneedle18 - Monday, August 25, 2008 6:57 PM
so does that mean i can still get a house in the mountains?

Posted by staychisel - Monday, August 25, 2008 6:52 PM
@blakseed, didn't you know? you can't get HOME if HOME can't be got.

Posted by mikester3127 - Monday, August 25, 2008 6:33 PM
who cares if it's delayed a delay just makes the game better they should have delayed haze more maybe the game would have been somewhat good but we all know that game was crap id rather wait for a game and it be perfect then have it come out fast and be full of lag and glitches

Posted by MrBig200 - Monday, August 25, 2008 5:20 PM
I'll believe it when I see it

Posted by WhiteWolfAssassin - Monday, August 25, 2008 4:54 PM
I dont get the appeal, it just looks too much like Second Life to me although I know its not. I have no interest in creating a virtual me and getting together with online freinds through home. I understand that Video Games have more social interation today then they used too, but what ever happend to making a console just for the games. Its not like you dont interact when playing multiplayer online. Maybe its just me, but where is the fun of going to your friends online virtual house and hanging out with him when you can have more fun just playing a game together online.

Posted by xMenace2SocieTx - Monday, August 25, 2008 4:53 PM
Home isnt anything but The Sims and Advertisement put together not very excited to get ads shove down my throat but hey you can play pool woop dee doo

Posted by paranoic - Monday, August 25, 2008 4:06 PM
STFU home is a nice add on from Sony, which is absolutely free. It could suck really bad, but who cares? Its not like your paying anything for it. Just wait for it to come out then be a critic of it. Im probably not gonna use it because I'd rather not meet people virtually.

Posted by TheRedStar - Monday, August 25, 2008 3:41 PM
This is to anyone who things home is stupid and people won't like it.....

Have you ever played a MMORPG?? Home supplies an environment where socialzeing can happen and frequently. In MMORPGs it is not uncommon for players to take a break from playing and just do mindless chat w/ eachother. Their even wedding events. Costume, and Furniture are also common in MMORPGs. They are takeing something that MMORPGs players do as a side hobby and given it a MySpace twist and added the ability to jump in to games.

Their's other stuff like sponsored spaces...which could be a crazy cash cow for Sony.

I doubt the ads on Home will be any worse than whats already on xbox live.

PS3: HOME, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, God of War 3, etc.

So much to look forward to! I'm so glad I own a PS3.

360: Gears of War 2...................oh, and Alan Wake.

In other news, Mirror's Edge was just named "Best Xbox 360 Game" at Leipzig. *cough* multi-platform *cough*

I can't wait for this I've been waiting like forever.Should be fun for a while unless Sony keeps it fresh and fun for us.

Posted by blakseed - Monday, August 25, 2008 1:34 PM
My bad Chris. I just don't know if this HOME is for me, or if I'll even use it. But if my PSN friends are using HOME, I guess I'll have no choice. Might be cool. Hey Chisel. My PSN is blakseed. Add me when you get HOME fool! lol

Posted by CPRxChris - Monday, August 25, 2008 1:18 PM
@ staychisel

WTF are you talking about?

On topic:

I've done a little research on Home, and it looks pretty cool. I've seen some of the ideas that they want to integrate, such as inviting people to your virtual space and then said people can be invited into a game (think Party Mode from GTA IV, but for multiple games, and ability to see others videos, etc.). I would highly suggest many people to do a little research on home, especially those who are ignorant about it (which is just about everyone who bashed it here).

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 1:17 PM
I think is better wait and have something well done to rush and have a crapy home style red ring x360 , and besides the some people going to start using home , and if this is something good then everybody are going to start using it, hey @Fece , you finish school jajajaj , is about time dont you think.
Just in case I heve the 360 i love it , but I return it three time because the red ring of death I like the console but i dont like microsoft , the customer service is really really bad , they dont care even bcause I pay 60 dollars for online services

Posted by staychisel - Monday, August 25, 2008 1:17 PM
Q: what's the opposite of l33t?

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Monday, August 25, 2008 1:11 PM
your apartment in home will be much like myspace/facebook... but rendered in 3D... I'm sure there will be a message board of some sort... a TV to view video content, and a music device to play music... and I'm sure PSP will eventually be able to access curtain aspects of home... I'm not saying it will be great or will last for ever... but i think it will have a good run... and a lot of the people that say it's worthless will be surprised at how many people really get into it.

oh and face... it doesn't make someone any less of a person if they choose to interact with people over the internet instead of in real life... the one's I have problems with are the ones that act like complete a-holes over the internets because they are not accountable for their behavior...

Posted by The Emperor's Champion - Monday, August 25, 2008 12:43 PM
Depending on where they go with it it could end up being pretty cool. As of now I'm looking forward to it as just sort of nifty.

Posted by Thundercracker - Monday, August 25, 2008 12:43 PM
home will prolly be badass but ive lost a bit of interest. Xbox users would love this, cause when they get grounded it can be like they can go outside!

this article has nothing to do with the xbox, stop trolling

What do facebook and myspace have to do with Home? They mainly are about leaving messages for your friends. If you had to walk an avatar around to do it, they wouldn't be nearly as popular. If you want to make a comparison it should be Second Life - which has millions of users who got bored of it and never use it. I couldn't care less about avatars on any of the 3 systems. I can't imagine Home staying popular over the long haul.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, August 25, 2008 12:06 PM
Facebook and Myspace can be checked via mobile phone *all the damn kids have'em now* and laptops at school. I don't really know if you will be able to do anything Home related w/o a ps3. I think connectivity with the psp could catch on a bit though.

Posted by face0324 - Monday, August 25, 2008 12:02 PM

what you guys are saying is reasonable enough but not everybody will use it like you will alot of people are gonna sit inside their homes cuz they are antisocial or scared to talk to people in person like second life and whatever other kind of games like this out there, i mean i love games as the next guy but i dont waste my entire day everyday playing videogames especially games like this like some of the people on here, but comparing this to facebook and myspace is completely stupid and by the way ive been out of school for a couple of yrs now, damn that was long

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Monday, August 25, 2008 11:43 AM

once you get out of grade school you'll realize you don't always live near your best friends... sure you have friends around where you live but sometimes you want to hang out with friends that don't live near by... or you've met in game... home is a good place to do so.

see: facebook, and myspace... if you don't think Home will be popular....

Posted by JizzLobber - Monday, August 25, 2008 11:32 AM
About freakN time , they have been marketing HOME since the pre-release of the PS3. I was starting to think it wasn't it ever going to come out.

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 11:02 AM
Microsoft is all about money and the new avatars they going to charge, for tshirt hats and shoes, I have the 360 but I going to keep my avatar naked , no more money for microsoft

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:55 AM

Posted by RedRingOfDeath - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:54 AM
The xbots are mad because we get home for free and they have to pay for $50 a year for what, avatars. If Home was on the 360 you guys would be raving about it and whenever your 360 isn't broke you would be using Home all the time if you had it. Stop hating on Sony.

Posted by BELROCK86 - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:43 AM
I personally am excited for "Home" and would love to see it come out this year but honestly it doesn't matter. I don't see myself spending a lot time hanging in the lounge or talking to people. I just play my PS3 and my Xbox 360 for games not because of a virtual community. I never even have seen or gone near second life because quite frankly I enjoy talking to real girls and not their animated avatars.

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:43 AM
@face , you want to be in the real world , well i guess you don like games , so what are you doind reading this, and waching this block , this is not for you , even the fan boys from microsoft are going to tell you that

Posted by staychisel - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:41 AM

I don't think I'll be interested in it until I start using it. It was the same with the Sony online store. What is cool about it though is that I'm a ways from my best friends, and this will be a cool way to keep in touch. Oh, and that's right, I have FRIENDS who also have ps3's... Took em long enough.

TheWolfMI maybe your are right, maybe not, lets see , one thing is for sure , they dont going to have a monthly fee, I just want to see how is going to be, and what features is going to have, maybe a try it for a few days if I dont like it, well lets see , maybe I like it,

home home

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:02 AM
And the rumors say they gong to do fun Stuff with little big planet and the new games like resistance and God of war for Home , is going to be something new I wnat to try out

Posted by TheWolfMI - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:02 AM
Really, I don't much care. But then again, I haven't really cared since I heard about it.

It seems neat. And that's tbe MAIN thing I can say about it. It's not mind blowing. It's not really inovative. It's not going to change the face of gaming or home colsole systems. It's just a neat looking gimick. As long as I don't gota pay money do be a part of it, I'll probably get it, but if it has a monthly charge, forget it. Not that interested.

Posted by gspider - Monday, August 25, 2008 10:00 AM
Is going to be better than the Avatar stuff from microsoft, I mean I have a xbox360, but I dont like new changes they going to have , they want to make look the xbox360 like the wii , I dont like that , but Home for Sony is cool , games can be launch from home and friends can see you apartment and trhopies , really cool

Posted by Bookshelf - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:57 AM
i don't know... killing people over and over sometimes gets old. In the mean time you can chill out and chat with people hanging out in the lobbies, maybe shoot some pool or play some bowling. And then when you feel like killing people again, hop back into say CoD4 and get to killin!! maybe even bring along some people you meet in HOME while you where chilling.

sounds alright to me. what do you think?

Posted by mybum - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:50 AM
home is something worth t try out
it is interesting, but it rly shouldnt b a big deal. sony should focus on getting good online games than home. most ppl would like t spend more time killing eneny teams with friends rather than sharing photos, videos, decorating ur virtual rooms
am i right?

Posted by ratshady - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:48 AM

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:41 AM
I do have a PS3. Sorry, just not interested in this application. Just like I'm not interested in the xbox live avatars coming this fall. Not interested. So is down311 not a ps3 user as well? It is okay for owners to not like all of the software put out...

Yeah I agree with you one hundred percent. Ads galore.

Posted by superfriar19 - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:30 AM
kobebryantyanic, you're 100% right. if home were coming out on the 360 all these guys would be hyping it up but since it's not they're saying it sucks. it's kind of like how the bash sony when a firmware doesn't work but will try to brush off the red ring of death as no big deal.

Posted by gtrogers - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:23 AM
Yeah, I don't see the appeal here. I just don't get why people would want to "play" this.

Posted by vismortis - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:22 AM

I've got PS3 and used the HOME beta. It's not going to make anyone run out to buy a PS3 that's for sure.

As someone who wants to get straight to the point and game with friends, HOME is a waste of time to me. I also find it kind of sad that this is exciting news for PS3 owners, I want great games to justify the price I paid, not fake internet parties.

Posted by kobebryantyanic - Monday, August 25, 2008 9:00 AM
@Smartyguy, lol of course you don't want "a fancy version of avatars". You know why? Cause you don't have a ps3. It's so obvious that people talking smack about home dont have ps3s. Lol, "too little too late" what does that mean? IGN previewed home last friday, and guess what, nothing buy positives were said about it. The guy simply couldn't wait for it to come out.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, August 25, 2008 8:58 AM
Maybe it was. I just want to play games on the machine, not network and share with people. I have a PC and a smartphone already. Besides, I'd rather go out.

Is this going to be a mandatory requirement on the PS3 when it drops?

Posted by jargy1 - Monday, August 25, 2008 8:52 AM
It's going to be paid for by advertising, which means I'll have to get bombarded with Axe and Mountain Dew ads that think they understand me or whatever. No thanks. Home is a great idea but I don't think the idea behind it will come anywhere near the final product. I imagine it's going to be a bunch of losers bragging about a bunch of clothes they get and showing off their loser virtual apartments. I'd rather Sony spent all this time to make a buddy chat system where I can play a game or look at the PSN store and still talk to my friend. Or maybe let me listen to my own music in a game. If Home doesn't address at least some of that, it's going to be an epic fail in my eyes.

Home is lot deeper than just a fancy avatar it's a whole virtual world where players can interact, share content, shop for whatever, join in on games, and you can even show your own personal photos and videos to others. I am not saying that Home is gonna be the sh#t, but "just a fancier version of an avatar I don't want" is a very ignorant comment.

Too little too late for Sony. Who cares?

Posted by Noonetohearme - Monday, August 25, 2008 8:39 AM
Honestly, 'Home' isn't anything much than a fancy version of Yahoo Messenger but this time you can see peoples' avatars. Plus, most people don't use their PS3 to meet new people out of nowhere. They use it to play games and then meet people.

but.......we'll see.....

Posted by Adakazane - Monday, August 25, 2008 8:36 AM
Home looks interesting and I'd love to see what it's capable of, but it's not really a big deal. Life will go on with or without it... It is kinda starting to fall in with Spore and Too Human in sense that everytime you hear about it Sony's just telling you how far away it is. Only 12 years to go people! lol

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, August 25, 2008 8:29 AM
