Gosen: Most Wii Fit Owners Only Played It Once
Posted By: John Manalang - Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:01 AM

Nintendo's Wii Fit is still a hot commodity in the market, but according to Xbox marketing head David Gosen, people don't play it that often. “We’ve seen some research that says 60 percent of people who bought a Wii Fit play it once and don’t play it again," said Gosen in yesterday's interview with Develop. He also said:

“What Nintendo have done with the Wii is truly fantastic – there is no question about it. But I think sometimes there is a thin line between gimmick and great gameplay."

While Nintendo's "digital bathroom scale" is a successful peripheral on its own, Gosen mentioned that the upcoming Inis-developed karaoke title, Lips, will be Microsoft's entry in the "creative" peripheral scene, thanks to its motion-sensored wireless mics. But we think that soccer moms would rather do yoga on their Wii balance boards than become the next Celine Dion. How often do you play your Wii Fit?

Develop: Gosen gets Lippy about "gimmick" controllers

My Wii gets turned on daily as well. I don't even know how many hours I've spent on RE4. (I'm on my 8th run through). I don't see why there's fighting anyway. If you like a certain system, you'll buy it. In my case, I have to buy a 360 (for RE5, Silent Hill, Fable 2, and Halo), but that's only because those games don't come on the Wii. But, that doesn't mean that someone else can't like the 360.

How did he get the research anyways? I work at a game store. Everyone who has bought Wii Fit says that they play it every night.

I fail to see how the game “Lips” is creative. The concept has been done gazillions of times before.

yeah but i dont play games like WOW, that fantasy stuff where you got to put 300+ hours into a game to get anywhere is a waste of time. and man i have seen microsoft do things like that on purpose (ie. windows me). but anyway i guess its a personal thing that goes back to the nintendo sega days. but the thing is hardware right now, maybe software next year. but for the fps i was never a fan of the halo series (i dont like the idea of shooting lazer guns) and i personaly have been a sony fan since i bought my PS in 95. it was a smart move for them to jump into the consoles.

More games for Wii? I got 29 and don't regret a single one. Ok, so a few games might not be for everyone, such as Metal Slug, Mercury, Elebits, or Trauma Center, but still the line of Nin produced titles should provide a great assortment.

Nintendo is good.
Xbox 360 is good.
PS3 is good.

If they are all good why the hate? I myself prefer the Wii, but I still enjoy the games on the other two systems. All three have there good and bad points.

I am very happy with my wii. I wish I had more games for it, but it's really my fault for owning all 3 consoles. I can only have so much stuff. Wii fit is something I would never buy, though. I am not surprised at all that it's not being played often.

I don't even play with my zapper. I played Links cross bow training once. Only on the day I bought it. And I am a Zelda junkie.

It's not millions and they're all wrong. Millions smoke too, does that make it an intelligent choice? Smoking costs a lot too when there are free ways to hurt yourself instead.

Yeah, shut your face kid. 360 owners know nothing about gaming. Just a bunch of whiners who come here just to pretend their little system isn't sinking quickly behind the others. Lol.

Posted by loco91 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 8:52 PM
yea millions of people suffer the "awefull" control scheme on live everyday. i mean a "pack" of kids on live.

Posted by Tmidiman - Thursday, August 07, 2008 8:19 PM
Oh and for thos e who haven't tried it. Hate to tell you, but while the Wii is not as powerful as the others it's controller is pin point accurate for FPS. Freaking tight control.

But I'm not worried. Once sony and MS use the same controls you'll be lovin' it up.

Posted by Tmidiman - Thursday, August 07, 2008 8:14 PM
I don't play my Wii much these days, as I'm busy playing tons of games on the 360. GTA IV, All Pro Football, and many others on the way.

I haven't finished Galaxy. I haven't finnished Zelda:TP. I haven't even opened Metroid Prime 3.

And that's ok with me. It will be there when I get there. It's a fun system to me, but the 360 is more fun right now.

And the thing is,...Nintendo knows this too. Not only by what gamers are saying, but if you're online and signed up to allow them to see what you play they also know that you don't play much at all.

also, i fire up my Wii everyday with games like Brawl, MKW, GH:3, MOHH:2, Fit, and Galaxy.

i particularly look forward to High Votage Software's: THE CONDUIT with it's graphics, Multiplayer and Wii Speak. plus the confirmed Pikmin 3

“We’ve seen some research that says 60 percent of people who bought a Wii Fit play it once and don’t play it again,"

iv'e seen some research that says 60 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot. Anyway, this is like asking Lex Luthor his thoughts on Superman

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 7:16 PM
I use my Wii everyday, so screw you guys.
Again instead of mocking the Wii FIX THE 360!!

I was at Walmart the other day and all they had was 360. The Wii has its fan base and the PS3 is picking up steam. My brother will get one as soon as Gran tourismo 5 comes out.

Posted by DPsx72 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 7:14 PM
Quite possibly the most important thing in a game - the controls. Analog sticks are so inferior to the precise control a M/KB gives you I wonder how anyone could tolerate such a thing. It's like trying to drive with an Atari joystick. Only a pack of kids would force themselves to suffer with this scheme. (And judging from what folks hear on Live I'm probably right.)

This doesn't even factor in the advantages a PC has in that genre, like custom content. At least if consoles offered M/KB then they'd be on the right track.

Posted by loco91 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 6:26 PM
im not sayin g anythine neg bout ps3, there isnt much.. wait what are u gonna spend it on? haze?

pc gaming yea its ok, but console fps arent bad. i dont c why u think they are.

Posted by DPsx72 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 6:13 PM
ANY console FPS is kiddie. N64 used controllers, so if you consider Halo 'adult' then you're saying the same for N64. Any self-respecting and skilled FPS player uses a M/KB. I don't think much else needs to be said.

Hey, I won't stop you from pissing away $50 a year. Enjoy throwing it in the trash. I'll be spending it on the games you wish you had, the ones that come with an equally good free online service. MMO's charge but I don't like them either. Anyhow, the list of insults to the 360 is much larger than anything negative that you can say about PS3 and Wii. They surpass 360 in every way.

Posted by loco91 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 6:00 PM
"nin doesnt focus on kiddie fps games"

are you talking about cod4 and halo??

and dude its just $50 get over it.And doesnt WoW charge ppl?

and no curt ms didnt do the rrod on purpose.ur an idiot. cmon think of something else to bash the 360 with.

you guys have only like 2 things to make fun of 360. rrod, and the oh so horrible 50 bucks a year!

Posted by curtmundell - Thursday, August 07, 2008 5:48 PM
like i said MS is playin monopoly again. yeah you spend 50 bucks a year on xbox live. but what about the $$$$ you have to spend for the MS points, huh. i mean some of that stuff is up to 1800 ms points, thats like 20- 25 bucks a pop. thats ms for you. but i do like the fact that i can download classics (cause i lost my cartridges) ffor the wii. i just wish they would put golden eye out.

Posted by curtmundell - Thursday, August 07, 2008 5:40 PM
yeah but how long can nintendo bank off of the whole mario and zelda cannons (and sub-games). im not dissing the wii cause i have one but it never gets played. nothing but motion control changed from the GC to the Wii. i mean brawl was fun but got real old real quick.

Posted by pswii60owner29 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:57 PM
Microsoft is obviously panicking. They're getting pummeled by Nintendo and Sony is even creeping up despite only having one worthwhile game (Metal Gear Solid 4). Oh and, screw whoever says the "Wii has no games" because as far as I know, Wii has the last two Game of the Year picks in Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I play it EVERYDAY (Brawl) along with Halo 3/Metal Gear Online. If only fanboys didn't exist...

Posted by jcslmassey - Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:31 PM
how many times have i played wii fit? NONE the first time i stepped on it it screamed at me and told me to get off!!!

Posted by DPsx72 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:03 PM
It's not a matter of affording $50 a year, but why should anyone be paying for what is free? If someone came up and said 'here's $300' (assuming 6 years of Live over the console's lifespan) would you refuse it? No, that's a nice bit of extra money. Not a fortune but it means those who own a real console get to enjoy a few extra games with free online that you 360 fools have to pony up for.

Ah if they had brains to make sense of this they wouldn't own a 360, so I'm probably not gonna help anyone with my argument. And they think 'Nin' has roped in a bunch of suckers... Lol. Oh well.

Posted by curtmundell - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:16 PM
thats all good on the online stuff but if your a true fps player leave that to the PC no console will ever beat the PC

Posted by Noirsamurai - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:12 PM
I like both systems but the only problem that xbox has is the RROD as far as paying for your online..if you cant afford $50 a year you need a better job and quick.

Posted by DPsx72 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:06 PM
I'm also glad it's not in HD. That crap is highly overrated. I run everything through my SD set and it looks perfect. So really this is just another nitpick by those who can't accept that Nin has made many smart moves and it flattening the competition.

By the way, I use Wii myself. No kids here. And of all the gamers I know all but one have a Wii, only one besides myself has a PS3, and no 360's.

Posted by DPsx72 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 3:02 PM
You people are just stupid. 360 is without a doubt bottom of the heap right now so of course M$ will have all these idiotic comments. Fact is Wii has more excellent games than the other 2 (mainly because Nin doesn't focus so much on kiddie console FPS's, those games are for PC alone). I use mine regularly, had it a year before my PS3. I rotate between Wii, PS2, PS3, PC, and all my classic stuff.

Wii Fit however isn't for me so I didn't bother. Once they put out some more software that uses it I might pick one up. I get plenty of exercise at work.

Posted by PoetGal01 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 2:52 PM
My biggest problem with Wii Fit is the same problem I have with Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, etc. .... it yells at you if you don't play every single day. I loved Wii Fit, but then I went on vacation for a week. When I came back, it yelled at me for not playing for a week. I got through that day's workout, but then I got busy for a few days, and the longer I went without playing, the less I wanted to go back, 'cause I didn't want to sit through being berated by a talking board just because I have a life that sometimes isn't in front of the TV playing a game (*gasp!*).

well it dosent matter the PS3 has proved hardware and owned it. its not my fault that microsoft didnt use blueray. plus the 360 sucks. bill gates has already got enough $$$ from me from these damn computers. and if you ask me something like 5 million xbox 360 had the red ring effect, i think they did that shat on purpose so they could get you to send them $100 bucks to fix the motherfker. i know because they did that to my stepdads 360. i give the ps3 maybe a nother year and it will be the console, since the HD/Blueray war proved it. and all of oyu guys who want metal gear solid 4 on the xbox, good luck cause it dont play blueray. but we also have a wii and i got rid of the games i bought for it. but most of the games for the 360 and ps3, ps3 has it beat hands down.

I have Wii Fit and I've played more than once. In my opinion, it brings a different style to gaming, and that's cool.

Posted by BoomstickSaint - Thursday, August 07, 2008 12:36 PM
I get really tired of people dogging the Wii based on graphics. Obviously graphics weren't their primary concern; and it need not be. Primary concern is gameplay. I have a couple games I really love to play on my Wii: Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Wii Sports, House of the Dead 2 & 3. I don't have Wii Fit, but I think the peripherial could be useful, for instance in a boxing game (Punch Out Wii, anyone?)

The real issue with the Wii for me is 3rd party games...that is the lack there of. I don't play my Wii much anymore simply because I can't find the games I want to play. Mostly I play my 360 for Rock Band, GTA 4, and Dead Rising. I haven't played My PS3 since I beat Uncharted. In my house play time goes 360, Wii, PS3.

To jwebb1970-

Ours gets used daily, too... by my 4 year old. It's great for children and parties, but I've played the thing about a handfull of times by myself. The motion control sucks and it look like ass, especially in HD. It's a toy... but I'm glad you have fun with it. More power to you!

Posted by falcore000 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 12:00 PM
I had a PS2 and the bought a Wii, which I played regularly for a while. Eight months later I bought a 360 so I could play Halo 3. My Wii has been collecting dust since. I only bought two games for the Wii since the reign of my 360 began (Smash Bros and Mario Kart) and even then I got bored with them within two weeks.

Posted by Hidger - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:57 AM
99% of of the current wii games can be made on the Gamecube with same graphic and game play minus the the motion control - paying $250+tax for remote control - is nice isn't it

Posted by CapoNyCPR80 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:54 AM
i dont play my wii but my kids do play it
but for the game they suck i got mario kart wii thats the only game fun to play on the wii smash bored me after one hour mario galaxy same thing
i think the wii is a waste of money
unless u got kids

Posted by droop4 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:36 AM
Well i want to buy it, but only to check it out i dont think ill play it regularly. Besides, Wii gets plenty of use from MKWii, Brawl and still need No More Heroes. People complain about lack of hardcore games, yet, barely anyone bought No More Heroes (awesome game).

But yea the main reason to get Wii fit is for the balance board and the new games that will support it.

Posted by Gogaku - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:34 AM
I would play Wii Fit a lot if I was able to get a hold of one. There doesn't seem to be many of them in VA. I haven't played on my Wii for a while, but I played regurarly (every other day or so) on it for a long while after I bought it. Mostly Wii Sports and Metroid Prime 3.
I want Wii Fit as a compliment to my regular work out, something to make it a little more fun and to do some different exercises that I don't have the knowledge of performing by myself!

Posted by TheXFrame - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:33 AM
@ Umbrosus .. hehehe. In my personal opinion I love the PS3's game selection. Not saying it's better than the 360 but it's definitely not as bad as the Wii.

Posted by SGAanubisSG1 - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:27 AM
Most of the people that i know that have a Wii barely play it. Were to busy playing on our 360's or PS3s.

Posted by Hueso - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:23 AM
Damn David Gosen, you do research on other peoples products but what about your own? How many times has your product been returned? My friend(s) have returned there 360 over twice so far for the same red ring of death. I bet your right about people playing the Wii only once, I've played it about 100 times or so and my kids still play it just as much as they do go on line with Disney.com, Nick.com, ect..., but I do like the fact that it connects to my wireless network (like my PS3), and connects to the internet for FREE!!! No annual fees, no need to purchase more hardware. Huh, MS...I think you are loosing in sales. Are you butt hurt that Wii has out sold you by twice if not three times more units, hardware and games?

Posted by pakodoom - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:17 AM
i contemplate getting a 360 or ps3 but honestly if they can't stick to fixing their own problems and stop trying to give nintendo bad publicity with BS off the cuff remarks like this i'm gonna boycott both of these companies which are already making a hard run for my poo list as it is. Senator McCaine, Microsoft, and Sony all need to learn that it's not worth their money to try to talk bad about their insanely popular competition.

Posted by Platformermaniac - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:17 AM
I think Microsoft is just jealous because it looks like Wii Fit is going to outsell every game Microsoft has ever published. Halo 3, Gears, all of them are about to be owned by Wii Fit. Then again, they already got crushed by Nintendogs.

Posted by pakodoom - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:14 AM
HA. just one portion of laugh that's all you get MS "PR" guys. i play wii fit twice daily now. i do the daily training every day while i get ready for work (after the shower and before getting all the way dressed) and then do a workout when i get home. i've been playing Metroid 3 though otherwise, and still try to get the rest of the stars on Galaxy when i'm drunk. also the virtual console has my memory almost full. everyone i know LOVES the Wii and plays it a lot.

Posted by willthegreat - Thursday, August 07, 2008 11:13 AM
I haven't played Wii in a few months and the last game I played on it consistently was Mario Galaxy. I might get Wii Fit eventually but, overall, I like my Wii the least right now (it's behind 360 which is behind PS3). They need to release Super Mario RPG on the virtual console...then I will get excited about Wii again.

Yes, he does. Don't you realize that MS is really Big Brother (not the reality show) and is watching you 24/7?

Posted by azn_bl1tzkr13g - Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:40 AM
He's only saying this cuz he knows the wii is pwning the 360. That's why their making the Newton and their little Microsoft miis. That's their only chance of surviving cuz the wii just surpassed the 360 in US sales and the PS3 is doing a lot better now. I play with my wii everyday cuz it's fun.

Here's my advice to David Gosen:
1. fix the red ring of death
2. stop charging for online. first you spend a lot of money on the 360, then they force you to buy a rediculously expensive adapter so that you can wirelessly connect it to your router. then, once you got that, you gotta pay even more money to have access to online.
3. stop being a tool and copying the wii

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:37 AM
I didnt bother buying Wii Fit because I discovered this new cheap way of staying in shape called "going outside". I'm selling my idea for the low, low price of $55 if anyone is interested.

I haven't used mine recently, primarily because after I get home from work and the YMCA, the games on Wii Fit just aren't that appealing. There are times where the skiing game is entertaining, but its not the same experiance as when I first got the Wii and plugged in Wii Sports. I'm not going to trade in my Wii Board yet, however, for I think that it has some very great potential and hope developers take advantage of it. If few games show up in the horizon for it though, I have no problem taking it into GameStop and seeing what trade value I can get for it.

As to the MS comments, what did you expect? Sony/MS love to take verbal swipes @ Wii/Nintnedo these days.

It's called sour grapes. How dare an underpowered "kiddie" console come & wipe the floor with both combined in sales? The audacity of Nintendo to even think about again ruling the game console business!!!!

Much less pull the feat off & do so while actually turning a profit from day 1?

Right now, most used titles are:

Fit
MarioKart
SSBB
Godfather:Blackhand

and recently have gone back to further complete Super Mario Galaxy & No More Heroes.

You know, I'm not gonna lie but I wasn't into it, you could say. And yes, I've tried and checked it out but overall, is just not for me. I would rather workout than pretending to work out...

I bought this for my wife. She likes yoga. Biggest paperweight I've ever bought. She used it twice, and ever since, it hasn't come out from under the couch again.

Its just like MS to bash everything...The only reason David would of said that is to true to make the 360 looks better.

The question should be: How often do you play your Wii in general?

@ Ragius

I knew someone would say that, but I assumed "good games" took PS3 out of the picture. lol

I've never played the Wii.

@ Umbrosus - That's called the PS3.

I think this speaks more about the people buying the "game" than the "game" itself. People don't actually WANT to work out, they just want to convince the people around them, and probably themselves, that they are GOING to work out. Promise. See, the balance board is sitting right there! But first, a pie. No, this is MY pie. All of it. That one's mine too, bitch.

Sounds about right. The Wii is a POS with no games and everyone and their mothers have them yet don't play them.

ALL my friends who have them play their PS2 more than their Wii. I have friends that still don't even know how to hook it up (which shows how much they play).

The only time I play Wii is Wii Sports when I'm drunk at my friends house for about 7 minutes before we get bored and play some PS3/360.

I hope people start to realize how worthless the Wii is.

I borrowed my friend's Wii and I was sick of it after two days and gave it back. He actually ended up buying a 360.

But I'm not going to say how great 360 is considering mine got the red-ring of death for the second damn time yesterday.

I wish a console existed that had good games and graphics (like the 360), but actually functioned.
