Xbox Developer Slain In Washington
Posted By: John Manalang - Monday, August 04, 2008 8:56 AM

Tragic news has hit the video game industry and community, as Xbox software developer, Melissa Batten, was killed on July 29 by her estranged husband in Redmond, Washington.

According to reports, Batten was on her way to work until her husband, Joseph Batten, shot her to death with a 9mm pistol and then pulled the trigger to take his own life. This tragedy happened just seven days after Melissa Batten received  an emergency protection order from a judge against her, according to reports, abusive husband.

Before the unfortunate event, Coin-Op TV featured Batten during E3 2008 as she discussed Rare's new title, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Batten also worked on two of Microsoft's biggest titles which were Gears of War and Halo 3. A Harvard-law graduate, Batten chose to grace the video game industry with her amazing talents. She will be missed by all.

Crap, rest in peace.

And to the lady gamers out there, I've been told that this this kind of stuff happens in 1 out of a hundred relationships (As in death or attempted murder). So please be very careful.

oh, and sorry about the word "crap", I didn't realize that I typed it when I said it.

This is very sad, but abusive relationships are not meant to be kept. They're nothing but trouble.

Thank you and rest well Melissa Batten. You will be missed.

Is it possible for the judge that issued the emergency protective order to be brought up on charges as an accessory for not really doing what was necessary to save 2 lives? Microsoft I beg you... look into this. The state of Washington has failed us all and cost us all greatly.

The Selfish and The Selfless!
Melissa, your work will live on and be remebered. . .

Abusive people should be flogged in public.

Now she has nothing to fear anymore.

RIP

@N8R
She received it...so what do you really want to happen? Keep this in mind...locks on your front doors only keep honest people out of your home; the bad ones just kick the door down or go around them. Learned that analogy in my ethics class a few semesters ago.

Very tragic. This behavior is either becoming all too common or we hear about more of these crimes in the digital age.

Sad thing is, this is what emergency protection and/or restraining orders do? All these things do is instigate these guys to do more against the person who took it out... Sad society in my opinion bad system also.

I suppose not much more can be done without infringing on the rights of the innocent, I just wish more could be done.

The only protection I can see against situations like this if the courts can't do it, is owning a functional projectile weapon of some sort. It doesn't have to be lethal, just incapacitating. If you can't fight fire with water, than you might as well back-burn so at least it won't spread. Maybe technology can remove the burden in the future, but until then it's the new wild west.

Sad, sad news indeed. At the risk of sounding like a right-wing wackadoodle, arm yourselves people. Nothing stops an attack on your person better metal and fire. "Emergency Protection Orders" aren't thick enough and a cop's too heavy to carry.

This world was truly only meant to have Melissa here for a bit, She seems to have spent her time well here, thank you and R.I.P.

Its a terrible loss not only to her family but to the gaming community. She will be missed. Its sad we wont see her future contributions to the game industry. I can't understand why whenever we hear of a person Murders their spouse they THEN kill themself, why wouldnt they just kill themself and leave their spouse alone. I'm not very religious but i hope if their is a heaven shes there and i hope to god if their is a hell that son of a bitch husband is rotting there.

Man, that is so tragic and sad. I hate to hear news like this. Ive been around domestic violence like this, and this is the worst way for it to end.

mellisa you will be missed...you are prolly in heaven laughing at our childish gamer quarrels and developing games for mediocre consoles.
I am normally anti gun, but in these cases it really is best to come strapped.

It seems like a cycle, 3 great people die in a row...
1.Bernie Mac
2.Isaac Hayes
3.Melissa Batten

All of you RIP

She was my best friends roommate, though I did not know her. I know the pain of those close and wish them all well. I know this is late coming, but I hope all who knew her find peace. Hard to do when someone close meets an end such as this. I find that man's actions disgusting at the least. A thief of life, and love. She worked on some great games yes, but games don't matter when it comes to things like this. She was a person robbed of life due to one person being a selfish bastard. She will be missed, and just after my friends description days before this... I wish I had met her. I am sorry for all who knew her, or played the games she had striven to make better. A great person, friend of friends, gamer, and game maker was robbed from us all.
