Sony 'Disappointed' On Final Fantasy XIII 360
Posted By: John Manalang - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 3:30 PM

Why wouldn't they be disappointed? SCEA President Jack Tretton expressed his honest opinion this morning on Square-Enix's announcement last Monday during Microsoft's press event that Final Fantasy XIII will also be launched in North America for the Xbox 360:

"Am I disappointed by it? Yes," said Tretton. But apparently, he saw it coming.  "Am I surprised by it? No."

Square-Enix's latest rpg masterpiece was originally a PS3 exclusive since it was unveiled, but Sony couldn't hold on to the rights. Why? Tretton simply said that Sony has already spent a great deal on the PS3's hardware and the company "can't write checks for exclusive software."

But in light of Sony's third-party exclusive struggle, Tretton said that Sony is now more focused in developing exclusive titles from the company's interior. "You've got to create platform-defining franchises that you own," said Tretton. He added that that would be the only way to advance exclusivity in the future. But, since the first Playstation, where did most of Sony's blockbuster titles come from? That's right. From Final Fantasy VII to Metal Gear Solid 2, third-party developers have been a huge deal to Sony's console.

However, there's God of War, Gran Turismo and other upcoming franchises like Resistance that'll support Tretton's statement. Besides, Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360 is only in North America and will still remain exclusive for the PS3 in Japan. Our thoughts on Square's decision: Square-Enix needed a title that will expand their RPG market into other platforms and what could be better than their staple RPG series, Final Fantasy. And while the Xbox 360's sales is not so strong in Japan compared to here, they simply decided to release the title here to a broader console base.

Stay tuned for more E3 2008 coverage.

this fanboyism stuff is stupid everbody will have their favorite gameing platform of choice.

Posted by cameykyle - Sunday, September 21, 2008 7:38 AM
personally I think the ps3 verison will be the better verison of the game.

Posted by Tman88 - Sunday, July 27, 2008 5:40 PM
I see it this way: Sony gamers will buy it for the PS3 and Microsoft gamers will buy it for the 360 and most likely it'll be the same thing with BioShock.

Posted by diabloblade69 - Saturday, July 26, 2008 9:40 AM
I personally would not liked for FFXIII to make that jump cause i still think PS3 is better. Yeah I like Halo and a couple of other games on the system but FF belongs to the PS console...

WHAT about the people who bought PS3's already just for FFXII?
WHY didn't they bring out a PS3 version for North America as well, they would definitely make sales
IT's a stupid idea and it should not have been made so easily. People will weigh there options some may not be able to afford another console and definitely not for FFXIII only!

Dam Square-Enix Dam, that was foolish

All of you ps3 owners can just fall on your knees and cry your eyes out final fantasy is not longer about X,0,triangle and square now its y,b,a,and X

Awesome. Nothing against sony, I own a ps3, but Jack is a giant douche and the more he squirms the happier I'll be.

Final Fantasy was exclusive first to the Super Nintendo first, then went to the Sony Playstation.

But Japan (wisely) doesn't want and like the (DEATHBOX 360) at all and Sony knows this and that's why Sony at least had sense enough to make sure it got released for the extremely hardcore Asian RPG fans in Japan but they are definitely betraying their hardcore Playstation only RPG fans in America and i don't understand that at all for the life of me and maybe this is one of the reasons why the PS3 is not going to win this next generational console war (in America at least because Americans are clearly the dumbest gaymers on the planet) when it comes to financially supporting severely flawed and definitely broken hardware (DEATHBOX 360) instead, you feel me?

To all of my PS3 fanboy gamer brethren that have never disrespected me ever on here:That's OK and That's alright because you can brag about the fact that Little Big Planet,Tekken 6,Gran Turismo 5,Metal Gear Solid 4,Resistance 1 and 2,Ratchet&Clank TOD,The Agency, and M.A.G. will never, ever be on the (DEATHBOX 360) ever, you feel me? It is a DAMN SHAME though that almost all of the biggest selling former Playstation only exclusive video game franchises of all time are now on the (DEATHBOX 360) unfortunately, you feel me?

The 12 discs thing is BS. A DVD can hold around 4 gigs a normal Bluray disc holds 25 gigs. Resistance only used 21 gigs, and all the data was uncompressed. The DVD can still hold a lot of data it just has to be compressed, where the Bluray disc currently doesnt have to be. It took forever for PC games to move to DVD, DVD is here for longer than anyone thinks.

At the end of the day I think everyone is not looking long term. Lets face it ps3 is lagging in this gen of consoles yes, but what about the next gen?? Lets face it games are getting bigger and bigger. Hideo Kojima was saying that even the bluray disk is getting small. So where does that leave us. Well all Sony has to do is say “no” to Msoft and boom there out of the console game. That’s y Msoft is showing all there casual games. Cus they know they have to make inroads in that market now, Nintendo will kill them when the next gen of consoles comes out.

whatever it's final fantasy 13 it most likely won't come out for another 2 years. and when it does come out for 360 it will be on 13 discs. sqeenix is just trying to make money and it's working, already.

this topic is way too overblown. i mean did anybody see deadspace? left4dead? infamous? so many better things to be stoked about than crying about a game that is 2 years out. as a ps3 owner i am more likely to get a 360 to play left 4 dead than ff13.

You know some people don't have enough money to buy both the XBox 360 and the PS3. So they buy the one with more games that are actually great games. They would have to buy the other system just to buy one of their favorite games or the newest in their favorite game series like FF games. So it's good that companys are making exclusives multi-console games so people will be able to play the newest games without spending a sh#t load of money to pay for a new system and the game. Sorry Sony people like a system for the huge amount of great games to play and the great stuff about it I know your making trophies and other things now but you should have had the gamerscore idea in mind when you started making the PS3. I mean come on Sony I use to think you were great and that you were inovating gaming but now your almost losing to Nintendo the last to switch to actual discs.

though you have a point with the ps3's first party games and their innovation towards the gaming industry, you're still forgetting about the online experince that microsoft has as well as the first party games that the xbox has exclusively like Gears 2, Fable2, and many more. as with your question with the disc capacity need for a 360 version of FFXIII, toshiba just announced a new DVD format that can store 15-20 GBs.Though not as advanced as the deceased HD-DVD, it is cost effective and has the upper hand on reguler DVDs, something microsoft can take advantage on.

Posted by Mikado20 - Thursday, July 17, 2008 11:59 AM
I'm very shocked about the news, but sure as hell not complaining about it. I only own a 360, and that makes me happy that I'll be able to play Final Fantasy XIII. I'm not that surprised in thinking Square wanted to expand their sales on more than one platform, and I think that's good cause it never made sense to me on games only being sold on one platform..and it's the one not everyone owns, but have to pay more in order to get that one game. :\

Posted by planet_shadow - Thursday, July 17, 2008 9:39 AM
If MS or Sony wants exclusivity, they need to pay for it. Sony cannot afford to do this for many reasons, but mainly their woes can be attributed to a poor launch strategy; a co. needs to sell their console for less than cost to establish a healthy user base. But games also drive console sales and third-party games, even exclusive ones, do little more than increase that user base. However, this does not increase Sony's marginal revenue. The only way to do that is to create robust 1st-party games. If the they are popular, then the MR will increase until it offsets their initial losses. Sony failed to execute such a strategy, preferring to rely on name recognition alone to sell PS3s. Hubris at its finest. But they forgot 1 simple maxim: if you don't have great 1st-party games ready at launch, then don't launch at all. A year later and they are still playing catch-up which will only lead to a further erosion of their NA market share.

@_Anubis_, i totally agree.

i remember hearing about killzone 2, gow3, mgs4, little plant and some others that were to define the ps3 system before it even came out. how many of those games have actually come out and what sort of success has come because of it? where is HOME? when will every online game have standard online support and trophies to boot? when will the in-game xmb be something that has equal support across ALL ps3 games including every single arcade game?

This is what I don't get: Gaming is a form of entertainment. Us males enjoy entertainment and we are very competitive. Its very health to be competitive. Gaming is competitive. So when we enjoy sumthing we support (id est Sports Team, Cars, getting girls, etc.) we're usually competing!

So please stop with the "I don't understand y u guys r fighting over a console, can't we just hold hands and enjoy ourselves?" U girls need to turn ur computers off right now and go jump in some Kool-Aid with ur sweet selves.

Posted by insight2881 - Thursday, July 17, 2008 7:03 AM
@ vole182 that was just nasty but funny lol
@santjnthn I agree with u. I'm proud to own and see an American console doing so well. Being the best is what we do best and our games reflect that.

Did any 1 notice Adam & Morgan's comments about the wheither Killzone 2 will SAVE the PS3? Morgan said "bluray WILL save the PS3" lol and Adam didn't hint that the PS3 was doing well. I gather from them that they believe the PS3 is falling off. It was kinda sad too buz I've gotten used to the "CONSOLE WARS" and am sorry that the end is almost near.

No 1 talks about DLC on the PSN becuz it doesn't matter, it can hold a candle to Xboxlive!

What freakin difference does it make! Why are video game fans begrudgeing other video game fans a chance to play a good game. I will never understand fanboys.
When I was a kid I was just happy to be able to play video games at home. I had a SNES, my freind a Genesis. You know what I did? I went over to his house to play Genesis games, not tell him he had a stupid system. (Which is what fanboys basically do. "You're system sucks, mine is way better. My dad can beat up your dad.")
Buy what ever system you want and don't hate. We as gamers are extremelly lucky to have so many great games out ther to play. If a game comes out for another system you don't have, don't say it sucks without playing it, play it first, you might be suprised.
(Yes, I know my spelling sucks)

"the former 360-exclusive BioShock is coming to PS3 in a huge way. Not only will it support Home and Trophies, the upcoming PS3 version of BioShock will also add "exclusive" DLC unseen on the Xbox 360 and PC."

- A HUGE way. Too bad Bioshock isn't a system mover :P have fun with your extra DLC

"or just wait till E3 '09 when SE announces that it's going multi-platform. I'm being half sarcastic in the last bit."

- Wouldn't doubt it. Squeenix is a business. Why do people make businesses? To make money. How do you make more money? Offer your wares to everyone. Loyalty is not going to play a part especially with the loosening of credit here.

All Sony did was talk about the PS2 and how Blu-ray was such a good choice.

Posted by Minimoose360 - Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:15 AM
Sony = poor

Aww. People are saying "Well it's only in North America, everywhere else the PS3 outsells the 360 easily."

A. Guess where all the 360's are? Here.
B. PS3 outsold the 360 for a couple months worldwide, but when it did it wasn't by a big margin.
C. The PS3 is still trailing the 360 by almost 100% despite their "spiked" sales after MGS4
D. It's great that it's only being released here, that's where Squeenix is is going to make all the money.

i am still trying to wrap my head around this flame war that people are having with ps3 vs 360. unless you work for sony or microsoft, why would you say that this system sucks, and this system is great. i personally own a 360 and am very happy with my purchase. in the future i will probably purchase a ps3 (when god of war III comes out). as for people who somehow feel betrade by SE bring FF13 to the 360. my question is why? really, why do you care? i really really like bioshock, and actually i am happy that bioshock is coming out on ps3. the reason is because i have friends that have a ps3, and now they can play a really great game. Somebody posted some loyalty thing about SE and the main final fantasy games should only be on the ps3. last i checked final fantasy 1-6 came out on nintendo systems. so where was this loyalty when 7 came out on the psone (yes i know the cartridge vs cd reason)? everyone needs to get used to multi-platform games. it is a great thing for the consumer.

Posted by SourProphit - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 8:11 PM
Sony's showing was impessive, but as has been said it was all talk. They plan on making an MMOFPS, they plan on GoW3, they plan on The Agency, but they didn't back it up.

MS's showing was somewhat less hyped, but what they did show they backed up with some intriguing demos. To sum it all up, MS actually [brought] more to their E3 show than Sony.

Posted by blakseed - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 8:07 PM
LBP comes out Oct.1 R2 in November, and Killzone2 in Feb of '09.

Did any of you X bots watch the reach of E3? They showed a Killzone2 demo, Resitence demo, LBP, and Infamous. Why do you keep saying they showed no demos? Are you on Micro Nuts that much that it has you blinded?

You, and everyone that assumes this, is an Epic Fail. Do you know why not as many sales are on the PS3 usually? Because we like our exclusives better.

"This is likely due to the exclusivity factor as exclusive releases on Sony's platforms have historically shown to be a better hardware driver than that of multi-platform releases. On average, PS3 exclusive games sell 45% more, throughout their lifetime, than multi-platform titles available on the PS3."

Sony still can deny that this was a big thing for them to have. Even though it wont affect them since Microsoft are idiots for just doing it in America. GOW3, Resistance 2, And FFXIII Versus would of definitly made up for it, Heck one of them would of.

Posted by valorxx - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 6:29 PM

Understand Sony's standpoint - though I think they should've found the money to keep FFXIII exclusive.

No company can keep paying software developers millions of dollars to keep a game exclusive over a long period of time. When that happens software developers will just keep raising their asking price. Developing your exclusives ih-house is the best way to go business wise.

That being said, Sony has a few exciting in-house titles that should definitely make some noise:

inFamous
Resistance 2
Killzone 2
The Agency
MAG
LittleBigPlanet
DC Universe

Posted by Oinkness - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 5:51 PM
We all knew Sony couldn't hold on to this, not only because they suck, but because their sales are horrible.

Epic fail.

No, Versus XIII is staying PS3 Exclusive.

I love how during pretty much all of E3, G4 keeps punching M$, even when they talked about the "best" conference and Kevin Pereira...do I really need to go on?

Anyway, They talk about FFXIII a million times and w.e., but they didn't even talk about BioShock on PS3 having exclusive DLC, and Sony didn't even have to buy it!

the former 360-exclusive BioShock is coming to PS3 in a huge way. Not only will it support Home and Trophies, the upcoming PS3 version of BioShock will also add "exclusive" DLC unseen on the Xbox 360 and PC.

@ icedbirdman

Sony's conference was not that great, they went from resistance 2 and Little Big Planet to PS2 game releases and then a bunch of games that are not just coming out for PS3, but most of them are already coming out for Xbox 360. Sony lacks games, they admitted that they lack the money and the can't do a price drop because its not making a profit in the US or Europe. Losing exclusives game after game is not a pretty good sign. I'm not going to say that Sony is going under like most of you think will happen with Microsoft. (all you fanboys are mistaken) Microsoft is here to stay and it will dominate just like every videa game system company has in the past. By the time Sony finally makes some type of an impact in the US, Microsoft will be on it's next system. Advise to Sony, time to let go of the PS one and the PS2 and work on PS3 full time. You hurting for money.

Sony and Sony fanboys should quit crying about FF13. Funny how some PS3 Fanboys were all about saying that Microsoft paid money when in fact the PS3 sales in the US are 1.8 Million vs. Xbox 360's 10.5 Million units sold. Let’s look at it in Square-Enix level and say, Sorry Sony... You are not doing well in the #1 largest Market, but you are doing well in Japan, but a little behind Wii. Not for nothing, Japan can keep most of their games; keep the good ones coming here. They can keep the PS3 too. We gave them love when Sony came out in the US, we gave them love with Sega and Nintendo system, where is the love for an American system? Well, there you go. Microsoft is kicking ass and will continue to kick ass here and in Europe. I love my American Developed system and let’s keep in mind that the best games are not coming from Japan anymore, the best developers are coming from US development companies..

i'll say it once and i'll say it again: sony gave NO release dates! they featured cg movies of games they are WORKING ON. the only game that is even coming out this year is resistance. little plant will probably drop early 09 at best. i just can't be impressed by sony hype anymore, i like to wait till games actually come out to judge. everyone of you hyped up haze and every other sh#tty ps3 game and i laughed afterwards. well, in that case, keep on hyping things up cause i love to laugh!

I will say this Morgan what ever her name is from xplay is an xbot. People harp about the games sony didnt show, but they gave many glimpes of alot of games coming out. MS showed fable 2 and gears2. Gears 2 being the best. then they showed games that will be on both consoles, then their version of miis and home, and the water down copies of singstar and eyetoy games. MS conference suck, just like last year.

Sony intro the
new store content
life with playstaion
R2
GOW3
infamous
LBP
KZ2
trophies support
and much more. the only thing I wish was delivered was HOME release date.

Posted by icedbirdman - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 5:07 PM
facts are facts, Xbox 360 did come out a year earlier and currently has a 6 million unit gap on the PS3. All Sony has to do is get the games out here. With resistance2, infamous, god of war 3, etc coming out then it should be no trouble. Sony first party devs have really shined this gen.its hard for third parties to make money this generation with the higher production cost but I do side with Sony on this one you should not have to pay for exclusivity. Sony put more innovation in and brought out better hardware, in the end everyone gets s h i x t e d on. Plus how many disc is it gonna tak to bring ff xiii to the 360?

AS of right now, NO. Square's exec president said that they will not break policy and that it will not change exclusivity. After E3'08, SE /Sony fans call this BS and take it with a grain of salt. We should get more info come TGS. I'm pretty much banking that E3 '09 FFVSXIII will go multi-platform.

@Ssliasil

Actually, having VS13 on the PS3 only is a much better move because VS13 is an online expansion or whatever that people who have a 360 CANNOT play.

In the end, PS3 users win slightly, since Versus 13 is still "exclusive" to the PS3. I agree with you on that though. SE has kinda screwed 360 users who wanted Final Fantasy on 360. If they're interesting in playing Versus 13, then they'll have to get a PS3...or just wait till E3 '09 when SE announces that it's going multi-platform. I'm being half sarcastic in the last bit.

is final fantasy versus XIII coming to 360 too?

Square would have been MUCH SMARTER to make VERSUS multi-platform not the main series. they hurt themselves by doing that, both games will sell equally well, but theres this honor thing when it comes to main series FF.

Yeah on N4g he makes it seem like he didn't know about it and was shocked as everyone. John is dead on when he says that Third Party development is what made Sony win back to back wars. Sony will be definitely be hurt in sales over in the states but should be fine overall, thanks to Japan.

Hopefully he is right though about his interior first party exclusives, if ALL of them succeed then Sony should be fine in the long run.

Sony showed the most First Party games at E3.

He IS right though when he said that this generation it will be harder to secure third-party exclusivity. I'm pretty sure we can bet on the next main installment being multi-platform. MSoft wins this generation in third party development because if they want, they can pay to secure exclusive DLC. Sony is NOT willing to do that. Just look at all the prior exclusives they've lost this generation.

well at least it's just in North America. everywhere else the ps3 outsells the 360 no problem.
