PlayStation Movie Rentals Live Tonight
Posted By: Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 1:27 PM

Do you have plans for tonight? If the answer is "No," why not rent some movies on your PlayStation 3?

Sony announced this morning that tonight the PlayStation 3 will be offering downloads of television shows and movies from Sony, Lionsgate, Disney, Paramount, Turner, Funimation, and more. Here's how the pricing will break down:

  • Standard and Hi Def TV shows will run you $1.99.
  • Movie rentals will cost from $2.99 to $5.99
  • It will cost up to $14.99 to own a movie for good.

Apparently it will take about an hour to download a movie (depending on your connection, of course.) in standard definition. You can stream, movies and shows though, at least in standard def. As for high def downloading: Take up whittling or a similar hobby--it'll take a while.

Hmmm, I'll have to check this again tonight, as I eagerly logged in on Wednesday to check this out and found nothing at the PS Store.

I would think that a major addition like this would be front page on the PS Store, and wouldn't be hidden down within the menus.

Perhaps it'll be there tonight.

As soon as I get home I'm going to start to download a whole bunch of freaking movies!! PS3 FTW!!!

Posted by GrandReaper999 - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 1:10 AM
And about rented files. If you look at the description on a game on a ps3, you'll see a time remaining spot on there. I'm assuming that's how they're managing it? On a timer? so what happens when u reset the clock on ur ps3/unplug from the network and copy the file? will they grey out the copy function?

Posted by GrandReaper999 - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 1:03 AM
How can you guys go on about copying MS???

Weren't netflix (and other sites possibly) doing this before MS started doing it? Remember this move isn't because MS has it, Sony is largely a multimedia monster, and Sony pushing their wares over a network is no less ridiculous as Apple doing it, MS doing it, netflix/gamefly doing it. It's just another way of doing business transactions...was walking into a store and buying something with money copying ms too? darn..

Posted by blakseed - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:58 PM
It's up and running as we speak.

Posted by shamus312 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:12 PM
So, has anyone been able to access the movies on psn yet? I had wanted to rent The bank Job to test it out..

This is funny with the whole Xbox360/PS3 movie deal. Before HD-DVD died (pwned), you could play them on your 360... granted you spent a ton of money on a special device to make the 360 capable. Then you have the PS3, which plays DVDs and Blu-ray discs from the start. Still a cool idea though...

@random_guy
did you really just spell minutes... minuts? are you kidding me?

"Xbox 360 starts to let you watch an HD movie minuts after you hit to start the movie, then while watching the movie, it still downloads. Standard shows and movies are pretty much instant."

lol your a noob, he said that at the PC saying you can either wait an hour for the WHOLE thing to download OR watch it as it downloads. don't rip on stuff you don't know.

Posted by tazem81 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:30 PM
That is great for 15 bucks you can keep it unlike the 360. Itll have to be sometin great for 15 bucks

Posted by Tasomo - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:01 PM
Ignore sant. He doesn't know what he's talking about. They said during the conference that you can start watching the movie 1 minute after you start the download because it streams. It takes an hour to DL SD flicks, but NOT before you can watch them.

Begone troll, you know not what you speak of.

Posted by T_Bone_1976 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 4:57 PM
@santjnthn

FF13 will ship on 1 blu-ray disc, something that the 360 can't match. How much more expensive will it be for the 360, considering it will probably take 4-5 discs to hold all that data? If it still costs 59.99, then a lot of profits are going to be eaten by that. Not that I expect a huge amount of sales generated by the game anyways.

Posted by raziel_hell - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 4:31 PM
so why was gta4 required install if it was about even with the 360 version load?

Posted by random_guy - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 4:19 PM
@ santjnthn
"okay, here is some education for you PS3 fans. Downloading a HD movie and spending 1 hour waiting to that movie to download is bad. Xbox 360 starts to let you watch an HD movie minuts after you hit to start the movie, then while watching the movie, it still downloads. Standard shows and movies are pretty much instant. Please understand that this is new for PS3, but for some of us Xbox fans, we had it for a while know. Tons of movie studios and TV stations. Sony has a lot to catch up too."

Um yeah everything you just posted the ps3 has too we can watch a movie after it starts downloading and so wat if you had it first, that doesn't make a difference now that both consoles can do that

Fat32 does not have the same compression rate as NTFS and many of the other wonderful features NTFS provides. You are going to have to look up how to make any external hard drive over 32 gigs work with a fat32 kernel. I was surprise to see Sony having external hard drives (great), but needing Fat32 kernal (not so good).

Here is a link on how to put an external hard on a ps3 http://asia.cnet.com/digitalli ving/tips/0,3800004921,6203287 5,00.htm

@bolo73
my 300gb external drive formatted just fine in fat32...

Posted by Bookshelf - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 3:42 PM
@santjnthn
its not that bluray can't handle it, it just makes the game more seamless. MGS4 only has 5-7 second loading times between areas. (remember when games had loading times of 20-30 seconds between rounds/maps? thanks to installs, the game feels more..together.. rather than separated by loading time segments.

@ Bookshelf

My man, wassup... PS3 is no good for games with out the harddrive. 4 gigs for MGS4, shows you that the bluray player is not fast enough to handle the games with out having to install software first. Not good, thats what Microsoft did not like about the Xbox 1, so why would Sony who seems to be ontop of things (or they act like it) make a system that depends on the harddrive?? now they want you to use up little space with movies.... Not good

So...anyone placing bets on the Store's server getting overloaded tonight?

Posted by Bookshelf - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 3:30 PM
@Krokodyle
right, i corrected myself.

Posted by Krokodyle - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 3:29 PM
Just to clarify, what I meant to say is that DVDs aren't just 'one big file'. Within a DVD's video_ts folder, the video files are broken into smaller files (usually around 1GB each), and would not have an issue with FAT32's limits.

I'm not exactly sure how BD works just yet, but it can't be too much different.

"the movies have to be less than 4gb because of the limitations the of FAT32 hard disk format the ps3 uses. so that's a good thing. woot woot."

I don't think that statement is technically accurate, since you're talking about *individual* file size limits on FAT32. DVDs aren't single files, they are multiple files within the video_ts structure.

"Wow they use Fat32? Ouch that means a movie will eat up a lot of room on a hard drive"

...what?

all that means is .... wait. they must have a trick or two to get around that because the install for MGS4 was over 4gb and so was GT5p.. hmmm maybe they can be over 4gb... lol im confused. if a movie happens to be over 4gb then most likly the movie will be physically 2parts on the hard drive but one icon on the ps3 under videos... and it would switch to part two automatically, not noticeable. nice. nvm, i was freaking about about nothing, fat32 ftw!

Posted by boofer - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 3:14 PM
what about blu ray downloads???hd is the same level as the 360...so sony is making no effort to surpass ms..the vid store is 3 years old for ms and now its ..wow new feature to ps3..hahaha

Posted by Letters2Kay - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 3:06 PM
You can buy any size hard drive you want for the PS3 from a variety of manufacturers in a variety of sizes, speeds, and prices. Not to mention external drives...

Sweet freedom.

Wow they use Fat32? Ouch that means a movie will eat up a lot of room on a hard drive. I think this announcement is geared for future PS3 owners since they are coming out with the 80gb hard drive.

LOL. Funny the Netflix has been doing streaming for over 2 years now ont he PC where it is portable or desktop. This is not going to convice me to buy a PS3 or get the PSP. I need games not just a few but a bunch of games that made Sony top dog for the last two game console wars. Now the big N is willing with the Wii console sales. 360 is selling more games than both systems combined and has a lot of downloadable content.

Sony had the best press conference and I don't care what 360-biased G4 or 360 fanboys say anymore. The conference sold me, and as long as they can deliver and continue to put out that kind of stuff, I just don't care what others think anymore. The video thing is cool no matter what console it's on.

Posted by Lucifer6972 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 2:17 PM
All I wanna say is about time they did this.

Sony........you have cool games coming out, there's no doubt about that. I, as a PS3 owner, will get them but I will admit, you guys got some work to cut through. Hopefully the "Greatest Hits" can help you guys out but in the end, is all going to decide what is best for the consumer...

Posted by Letters2Kay - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 2:17 PM
I need someone to test my Olivia Munn theme that I updated for 2.41 for me while my PS3 is in the shop. Anyone interested???

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 2:16 PM
this is way better than the 360's system... I'll take my movies on the PSP anytime over watching them with online friends... I can see BlockBuster signing on with Sony and offering the same thing as the netflix thing... good possibility too I'd say since at my block Buster they just put up a huge Sony PS3 display.

Really? I didn't know 360 let you take those movies with you on the 360 Portable. Oh wait, your stuck having to watch em' only on the 360.
