[Comment From Danny HuckinsDanny Huckins: ]

Thursday July 21, 2011 5:04 Danny Huckins
5:04
Eric Eckstein:
We actually interviewed both of them as well! Plus Paul Dini, though that was just an brief audio interview.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:04 Eric Eckstein
5:04
Eric Eckstein:
All that content and more is coming later in the week. We *just* shot those interviews right before this panel, where they are expected to attend.

What no Man-Bat or Clayface?

Eric Eckstein:
Limited fields, my friend. But love 'em both!
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:07 Eric Eckstein
5:12
Eric Eckstein:
Our own Kevin Kelly is in the room, but his Batcomputer is giving him some difficulty... so he may ferry some updates from the room over my way.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:12 Eric Eckstein
5:13
Eric Eckstein:
Alright, looks like it's starting....
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:13 Eric Eckstein

Eric Eckstein:
And voice talent Kevin Conroy, and of course, Mark Hamill...
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:15 Eric Eckstein
5:16
Eric Eckstein:
...and last but not least, Stana Katic, the newly announced Talia al Ghul
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:16 Eric Eckstein
5:17
Eric Eckstein:
Just a reminder: there is no broadcasting or live streaming of Comic-Con panels. It's not our fault!
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:17 Eric Eckstein
5:17
Eric Eckstein:
They're talking to Stana about her character. She's a former lover of Batman's.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:17 Eric Eckstein
5:17
Eric Eckstein:
She'll carry a sword in the game. A samurai sword.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:17 Eric Eckstein
5:18
Eric Eckstein:
She just asked Mark Hamill if she could touch him!
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:18 Eric Eckstein
5:18
Eric Eckstein:
Now they're asking Jim Lee about support from the comics.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:18 Eric Eckstein
5:18
Eric Eckstein:
He's pimping the comic series which is up to issue 4, and the digital comics.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:18 Eric Eckstein
5:19
Eric Eckstein:
They stitch the story together from the original game to Arkham City.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:19 Eric Eckstein
5:19
Eric Eckstein:
Paul Dini: "It's a nice bridge of the mythology between the two games."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:19 Eric Eckstein
5:20
Eric Eckstein:
Dini wrote the interstitial comics, if you didn't know.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:20 Eric Eckstein
5:21
Eric Eckstein:
There is a big collaboration between Rocksteady and Paul Dini on the project.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:21 Eric Eckstein
5:22
Eric Eckstein:
Now Mark Hamill is talking about the mythology of the character. It was solidified for him in a comic Dini wrote called "The Man Who Killed Batman."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:22 Eric Eckstein
5:22
Eric Eckstein:
Now Conroy and Hamill are doing their voices, and Conroy just quipped "Oh baby" as Batman.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:22 Eric Eckstein
5:23
Eric Eckstein:
BTW: We will have the new Batman trailer at 6AM Pacific tomorrow, so be sure to come back to see it then.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:23 Eric Eckstein
5:26
Eric Eckstein:
Hamill said he wanted to do a book on tape of "The Killing Joke" which he views as the Joker's Hamlet.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:26 Eric Eckstein
5:27
Eric Eckstein:
But that project didn't happen, and Alan Moore, the writer, is famously standoffish.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:27 Eric Eckstein
5:27
Eric Eckstein:
But then along came Arkham Asylum and he got his wish.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:27 Eric Eckstein
5:28
Eric Eckstein:
Batman was Kevin Conroy's first voice audition. And he got the part, luckily.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:28 Eric Eckstein
5:29
Eric Eckstein:
Conroy is recounting going to a voice session during the LA riots, "Here I am driving my Volvo, and there are fires everywhere, and people are all driving the other way."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:29 Eric Eckstein
5:29
Eric Eckstein:
Stana chimes in, "Well, that's because you're Batman."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:29 Eric Eckstein
5:29
Eric Eckstein:
Big laughs from the crowd.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:29 Eric Eckstein
5:29
Eric Eckstein:
Apparently, there are some good outtakes from their recording sessions.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:29 Eric Eckstein
5:31
Kevin Kelly:
Hey guys! Kevin Kelly, hopefully joining you LIVE here.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:31 Kevin Kelly
5:31
Eric Eckstein:
Conroy and Hamill are swapping recording horror stories..
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:31 Eric Eckstein
5:31
Kevin Kelly:
My connection has been wonky, so we've been piping it back. Can you read me?
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:31 Kevin Kelly
5:31
Eric Eckstein:
Great Caesar's Ghost!! Welcome Kevin, go to town.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:31 Eric Eckstein
5:32
Kevin Kelly:
Paul Crocker from Rocksteady is telling us about the game... well, somewhat. He can't tell us why Talia Al'ghul is in the game "Because that would spoil a huge part of the game."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:32 Kevin Kelly
5:33
Kevin Kelly:
Hamill related how he didn't even know the first game had become a hit until his son called him one day and said "Dad! Go to Joystiq.com! You're a hit!" (and hey, that's where I used to work - congrats to those guys)
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:33 Kevin Kelly
5:33
Kevin Kelly:
Crocker and Dini are talking about working on the game together, and what it was like mapping out a huge core narrative.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:33 Kevin Kelly
5:33
Kevin Kelly:
They're trying to cram as much story elements and character as possible into this game.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:33 Kevin Kelly
5:34
Kevin Kelly:
Dini is talking about a massive storyline they had to drop from the game that they might talk about next year or explore further at a later date. Sadly, he didn't tell us what that was.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:34 Kevin Kelly
5:34
Kevin Kelly:
Hamill is talking about bringing the Joker character to life, and how he just tries to bring what's on the page to life.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:34 Kevin Kelly
5:34
Kevin Kelly:
In this version, he was trying to fit the Joker into what's happening with that character in this game.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:34 Kevin Kelly
5:35
Kevin Kelly:
Now he's grousing because he didn't know that there were Arkham Asylum action figures. DC didn't even send him any!
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:35 Kevin Kelly
5:35
Kevin Kelly:
They're promising to send him the new toys: Harley Quinn, Battle-damaged Robin, and Killer Croc are part of the first wave.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:35 Kevin Kelly
5:37
Kevin Kelly:
The Killer Croc figure is pretty huge.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:37 Kevin Kelly
5:37
Kevin Kelly:
Dini is talking about the interstitial comic, because a large amount of time has passed between the first game and the second one, so some of the comic stories are huge, and some of them are small, depending on what they're focusing on.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:37 Kevin Kelly
5:38
Kevin Kelly:
So, based on the figures, it looks like Killer Croc is back in this game, and maybe we'll actually be able to face him.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:38 Kevin Kelly
5:38
Kevin Kelly:
Jim Lee said that his wife told him "Why do you have to look at the menu? You know who's going to be in this game."
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:38 Kevin Kelly
5:39
Kevin Kelly:
So we'll be seeing plenty of familiar Batman faces it looks like.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:39 Kevin Kelly
5:39
Kevin Kelly:
Now they're talking about the Batman: Arkham City Collector's Edition, but different retailers will have different extras, and Jim Lee isn't sure what he can talk about just yet.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:39 Kevin Kelly
5:40
Kevin Kelly:
The toy reveal sort of preempted the fact that Killer Croc is indeed in the game.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:40 Kevin Kelly
5:41
Kevin Kelly:
Crocker is talking about how Rocksteady is "The House of Batman" right now, because everyone is a huge fan of the character, and the Bat symbol is on just about everything at the studio.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:41 Kevin Kelly
5:42
Kevin Kelly:
He said (jokingly) that they are currently killing themselves making the game right now. Especially since the game is huge this time around. They had to develop gliding systems to help Batman get around quickly.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:42 Kevin Kelly
5:43
Kevin Kelly:
There's a "nice surprise" coming very soon, which will apparently be a new trailer.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:43 Kevin Kelly
5:43
Kevin Kelly:
And they're giving away the Batman figure. Here comes the trailer.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:43 Kevin Kelly
5:43
Kevin Kelly:
Batman's sitting on a rooftop, while choppers hover overhead.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:43 Kevin Kelly
5:43
Kevin Kelly:
He drops down, starts fighting thugs.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:43 Kevin Kelly
5:44
Kevin Kelly:
The Penguin takes out a guy wearing a "DEAD COP" tanktop.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:44 Kevin Kelly
5:44
Kevin Kelly:
Batman says he only came for the hostages, but now he's going to take the Penguin down too.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:44 Kevin Kelly
5:44
Kevin Kelly:
Penguin's thugs are wearing "Arkham Department of Corrections" outfits.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:44 Kevin Kelly
5:45
Kevin Kelly:
Penguin rips a hole in the ground, and Batman goes plummeting into the depths... facing... SOLOMON GRUNDY (which already leaked)
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:45 Kevin Kelly
5:46
Kevin Kelly:
There's a legacy edition of Batman: Arkham City available as an oversized figure, and it's Batman in his classic grey and blue outfit.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:46 Kevin Kelly
5:46
Kevin Kelly:
I'd imagine that this costume is going to be unlockable in the game since it's part of the toy line.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:46 Kevin Kelly
5:47
Kevin Kelly:
You can also get this same figure as a gift with purchase, although it's a smaller figure, when you buy the game at Toys R Us.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:47 Kevin Kelly
5:47
Kevin Kelly:
That's pretty much the entire panel, as they're starting to wrap things up. I through they'd have a Q&A...
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:47 Kevin Kelly
5:48
Kevin Kelly:
Hamill is giving us some trivia... he used to voice Solomon Grundy for Justice League.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:48 Kevin Kelly
5:48
Kevin Kelly:
"This is the most gnarly version of Solomon Grundy that I've ever seen" says Hamill.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:48 Kevin Kelly
5:48
Kevin Kelly:
Hamill asks who is doing the voice for The Penguin, and they tell him "We can't say!"
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:48 Kevin Kelly
5:49
Kevin Kelly:
And... that's a wrap! Overall, I'd say this was slightly underwhelming, eh? But hey, Killer Croc, toys, Solomon Grundy... just nothing about Robin. Dammit.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:49 Kevin Kelly
5:49
Kevin Kelly:
I want to be the first to play Nightwing: Arkham State
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:49 Kevin Kelly
5:50
Kevin Kelly:
That's right, no Q&A which was a big disappointment to the audience.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:50 Kevin Kelly
5:50
Kevin Kelly:
Nope, no Q&A, the room has cleared out. Sadly, that's all she wrote.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:50 Kevin Kelly
5:51
Kevin Kelly:
Sorry gang, I'm just as bummed as all of you because this is one of my most anticipated games of the year.

Thursday July 21, 2011 5:52 Kevin Kelly
5:53
Kevin Kelly:
I also sat down with Paul Dini, and I'll have a writeup about that for you soon as well.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:53 Kevin Kelly
5:53
Kevin Kelly:
I'm heading off to play some Darksiders 2, which I look forward to telling everyone about very soon.
Thursday July 21, 2011 5:53 Kevin Kelly
5:53
