Comic-Con 2011

At the Comic-Con 2011 Knights of Badassdom panel we get to take a look at the new fantasy adventure film from IndieVest Pictures. Panelists will include Ryan Kwanten (HBO's True Blood, Red Hill), Peter Dinklage (HBO's Game of Thrones, Station Agent), Steve Zahn, pending availability (HBO's Tremé, Saving Silverman), Summer Glau (Firefly, Serenity, The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Danny Pudi (NBC's Community), Jimmi Simpson, pending availability (A&E's Breakout Kings, Date Night), Margarita Levieva (The Lincoln Lawyer, Adventureland). and director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2).

The panel will feature a Comic-Con exclusive trailer and a discussion/Q&A. In this humorous film, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who's just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage) kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, where he enters a realm of fantasy escapism in which pretend knights, elves, and barbarians clash with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. When Joe's "sorcerer" roommate (Zahn) inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth's seductive form, bloody reality crashes down on their fantasy world. Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must become the real-life heroes they have been pretending to be in order to conquer the evil that has been unleashed.

Knights of Badassdom Welcomed at Comic-Con!

Knights of Badassdom came, saw and conquered this year's Comic-Con with a hilarious and packed panel in Hall H, complete with actual LARPers, too.

The action-comedy-fantasy film (or adventure film, as director Joe Lynch likes to call it) follows the tale of a young man dragged into the world of LARPing (live action role playing), where they accidentally conjure a succubus demon and must then save the world. With a cast that includes Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Summer Glau (Firefly), Jimmi Simpson (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Danny Pudi (Community) and Michael Gladis (Mad Men), you know this movie is going to kick ass.

Joe Lynch, one of G4's very own and the host of Attack of the Show's Body Count, fell in love with the script, which he said had "everything put together," from heavy metal, LARPing and monsters. "This movie is made for us."

But don't think Knights of Badassdom is about making fun of people who like to dress in medieval costumes and battle with foam swords. Lynch did his best to make sure his movie was respectful of all things LARP. He reached out to the LARP Alliance, working closely with them to ensure that their cast played by the rules and everything was faithful and realistic.

The director also credits his cast for embracing the LARPing lifestyles of their characters. Summer Glau said that shooting was like "six weeks of summer camp" while Dinklage was known to boast the best sword skills out of everyone. Margarita Levieva, who plays the Succubus, enjoyed the taste of fake blood and organs. The role of playing a monster gave her a chance to create an unfamiliar, growling character. Even Joe Lynch got into LARPing: he showed off Edith, his foam sword named after his grandmother that accompanied him everywhere for good luck.

The cast isn't the only thing to look forward to; heavy metal plays a big role in Knights of Badassdom, so expect an awesome soundtrack from some of the best that metal has to over. That also includes the work of Bear McCreary, the composer for Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, and Joe Lynch's own Wrong Turn 2. Joe promises that yes, there will be a heavy metal orchestra involved.

For Joe, Knights of Badassdom represents a hopeful lesson for geeks like us: it's about wish fulfillment and being all that we can be, and that includes cosplaying as your favorite video game character at Comic-Con. "Yes, you can be someone else!" he said to cheers from the audience. In the meantime, we'll be someone who can't wait to watch his film in theaters. Knights of Badassdom opens in theaters soon!
