How to make your DSL service work properly if your provider uses PPPoE.

DSL service is commonly provided in one of four ways: bridged, routed, PPPoA, PPPoE. The first three methods are Internet standards that only require proper configuration of your computer.

PPPoE is different. It usually requires either special software in your computer or special additional hardware. (For the basics on PPPoE, go here.)

The good news is that PPPoE makes it easier and less expensive for providers to supply and manage subscribers. It has rapidly become the most common method of providing ADSL (the dominant type of consumer DSL) service. The bad news is that PPPoE can cause problems for subscribers.

When PPPoE is used, providers commonly supply special PPPoE software to subscribers, often either NTS EnterNet or Wind River WinPoET. Although these two products have matured considerably since their first releases, they can still cause frustrating problems.
