Oh, Jack Sparrow. You have entranced us with your charisma, wit, adventuresome spirit, and swashbuckling antics. We loved you in the original Pirates of the Caribbean and expect to love you even more in the two upcoming sequels. But there’s a new pirate in town and you may have just met your match? The name of this dastardly rogue? ME!
Yes, in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean massive multiplayer game you get to be a pirate and go on your own adventures alongside or even against the great Jack Sparrow. While the videogame version of the film will be released alongside the film on July 7, this online multiplayer version won’t come out until ’07. But that didn’t stop Disney Online VP of Premium Products Steve Parkis from telling G4 all sorts of juicy details about what we can expect from this version of the Pirates of the Caribbean game. Read on…unless you wanna get your jewels snatched by an angry pirate. And no one wants that…
So how will your massive multiplayer Pirate of the Caribbean differ from the regular game?
The main difference in our game is you're not playing as Jack Sparrow, you’re playing as your own character in the Pirates universe. Now, you do run into Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swan, Will Turner and all the bad guys from the movie. But it’s really about you crewing up with your friends and you go on missions in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe.
So you aren’t really playing the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, so much as making your own movie.
That’s right. You’re living your own legend. That’s our hook. It’s really about you becoming the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean. You want to “out Jack Sparrow” Jack Sparrow. We’re gonna have everything form ship battles to land battles to card games, plus the supernatural, the undead, spells, voodoo. When you go to a card game in our world, cheating is encouraged, so it’s very much the pirate lifestyle.
So how exactly do you interact with Jack Sparrow?
He’ll send you on quests. Jack is always up to something and he is going to want to somehow get you to do his dirty work for him.
Is he your friend in the game or your nemesis?
That’s the classic question of Jack Sparrow. Is he on your side or not on your side? At any given point you know he wants you to do something and you don’t know why.
How much do the creators give you free license to run with their characters and plot ideas from the film?
We’re very lucky. The studio has been exceptional in working with us. We have our own bad guy, Jolly Roger, and he has his own mythology. They really embraced that and let us run with that. We haven’t had any issues and it’s been a very seamless experience. The great thing about the Pirates of the Caribbean is that it’s such a wide open franchise, there’s so much unexplored territory. They’ve really let us run with it. It’s been great.
So you’re really not even restricted by the plot of the movie and can have almost complete creative freedom.
As long as we’re true to the franchise and keep Jack Sparrow being Jack Sparrow and are in the environment you associate with the movie and ride, we’re given a lot of rope.
Since they shot the third movie in the trilogy back to back with the second one, will there be another game to go with that?
That’s the great thing about the massive multiplayer game, is that we’ll just release new content into the existing game. So this game will live on for several years and we’ll just release new content, new missions, new adventures, and we’ll keep up with the film franchise with new content. The next film comes out Memorial Day next year, and, yes, we’re already in design on what are our elements from the third movie that we’re gonna integrate into the massive multiplayer game. And the movie calendar is so far ahead of our game development calendar, we have plenty of time. And not only can we orchestrate those ideas, but we don’t even have the luxury of just reliving the movie, so we have to riff and be very creative on our end. What are we going to integrate and how are we going to integrate it? And how we are going to move people? How are we going to encourage you as the player, where you get to decide what you want to do every day in our game, to go do the things that have to do with this movie franchise.
