The Loop: Not So Super Deluxe

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, May 08, 2008 10:56 AM

Media giant, Time Warner has decided to merge its comedy video site, Super Deluxe with the Cartoon Network site, Adult Swim, a move which has resulted in the termination of an untold number of the Super Deluxe staff.

Time Warner hasn’t gotten where it is by making bad decisions and its actions seem to indicate that, popular as the Super Deluxe was, it wasn’t turning a profit (or enough of one to justify its existence).

The Loop: One On One With Bear Grylls

Posted by Eugene Morton - Wednesday, May 07, 2008 11:19 AM

There are a lot of different ways to define “macho.” Personally, we don’t think a guy is masculine because he likes guns and blowing things up. Admittedly, that stuff is pretty cool, but to us a real man is one who can survive in the wild with only his wits and will.

That’s why we view Bear Grylls as sort of the ultimate dude. You’d agree if you ever saw an episode of the survival wilderness show, Man vs. Wild. We’ll chat with Grylls in today’s Loop and see what’s going on with the proto-man. Be there.

The Loop: YouTube and Politics

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, May 05, 2008 4:30 PM

Are you interested in the America political process? Well, let's just say you were. Then you'd be interested in today's Loop, because we're looking at how your favorite video-sharing site, YouTube, affects elections.

That's right, somehow, those LOL-videos of Hillary Clinton singing the national anthem to lumberjacks and John McCain kickboxing will decide the fate of the free world. It's a terrifying and invigorating thought, right?

We'll swim right into those thoughts tonight, only on The Loop.

The Loop: Is Physical Media Going Extinct?

Posted by Eugene Morton - Friday, May 02, 2008 12:13 PM

From Betamax to Blu-ray, physical media has continued to evolve and change, often forcing resistant consumers to change as well.

However, if things continue to go the way they seem to be going, consumers may never again need to buy their entire movie collection all over because of a format change, nor will they have endure a lengthy format war.

The Loop: Lost Again

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, May 01, 2008 11:51 AM

Lost is one of the most popular shows on television. We postulate it’s because the show manages to keep audiences hooked by creating more mysteries each episode than it answers, while some say it’s the fantastic acting of the ensemble cast that viewers find so appealing.

Whatever keeps people coming back, the bottom line is, the fans want more, much more and they’re going to get it. On today’s show we’ll interview the Executive Producers of the show, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof about the future of Lost and the possibility of a movie.

The Loop: Maker Faire

Posted by Eugene Morton - Wednesday, April 30, 2008 11:41 AM

Surely, you’ve had a slew of bright ideas in your lifetime that you’ve never done anything with. It’s a shame, but you’re not alone. It requires a motivated and (hopefully) brilliant mind to take something from concept to completion. Even after that, some inventions never see the light of day.

Thankfully, now there’s a convention for amateur inventors which allows them to showcase their masterworks to the world, Maker Faire.

On today’s show we’ll talk with the Senior Editor for Make Magazine, Phillip Torrone (who will cover the event) and maybe get an early glimpse at a world changing tech marvel.

Posted by Eugene Morton - Friday, April 25, 2008 11:59 AM

When you first saw John Rambo rip his enemies to shreds in movie theaters, you probably wanted to be him. Today’s guest more than likely felt the same way.

However, instead of transforming himself into a grizzled, muscular killing machine, Garth Jennings harnessed his affection for Rambo to create the comedy, Son of Rambow.

We’ll chat with the talented director about his new film and ask him what it was like to kind of live out the prepubescent dream of a lot of young moviegoers.

The Loop: Earth Friendly Autos

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, April 22, 2008 11:48 AM

People today are more earth-conscious than they’ve ever been and the automotive industry is starting to pay attention. The cry for cleaner autos and alternative fuel has become a deafening roar, which has resulted in an increase in the production of hybrid cars like the Prius.

However, there is still more that could be done to make automobiles less harmful to the environment, such as making ethanol powered vehicles that produce no pollution. Currently, there are a slew of prototype eco-vehicles in the testing stages, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll make it to production. In the coming years, will the automotive industry go completely “green?”

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Associate Editor for Wired Magazine, Joe Brown.

The Loop: Is The Blogosphere In Trouble?

Posted by Eugene Morton - Friday, April 18, 2008 11:25 AM

Undeniably, Gawker is one of the top sites in blogosphere. It’s the blog that a lot of other blogs aspire to be and has been on the forefront of the alterative web media revolution from the beginning.

Recently, Gawker, the money making, add sponsored machine that it is, sold three of its most popular assets Idolator, Wonkette and Gridskipper. Is this a sign that advertisers have lost faith in the drawing power of blogs?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Managing Editor of Gawker, Noah Robischon.

The Loop: Hollywood Loves Anime

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 17, 2008 11:25 AM

Hollywood is going anime crazy. There are a slew of live action anime adaptations in the works, such as the forthcoming Speed Racer, the rumored Ghost in the Shell and, unbelievably, Akira.

While fans of the source material may see this sudden interest in anime as long overdue, we all know that tinsel town operates in cycles or waves. Is this new trend in movie making just a passing fad? Furthermore, will these kinds of films resonate with mainstream audiences?

To answer those questions, we’ll welcome Film Editor for USA Today, Scott Bowles.

The Loop: Getting The Rock Band Together

Posted by Eugene Morton - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 11:39 AM

When Guitar Hero was released nobody thought the rhythm game par excellence could be topped, but in less than six months, Rock Band has taken the number one spot in the hearts of many gamers and would-be rock stars alike and for good reasons.

First, not everybody wants to play extended solos on their V-neck guitar. Some people want to drum like Danny Carey or sing like Maynard James Keenan and Rock Band allows them that luxury. Second, the downloadable content assures that, unlike Guitar Hero, you won’t have to wait for a whole new game to play more tracks from today’s hottest artists.

The Loop: Yahoo Keeps Up The Fight

Posted by Eugene Morton - Monday, April 14, 2008 11:39 AM

Like a love unrequited, Yahoo continues to resist Microsoft’s advances. It’s doing everything it can to avoid being swallowed up by the tech giant, including trying to merge with AOL, engaging in a limited partnership with Google, making its influence known on Flickr and much more.

Yahoo’s efforts may yet save it from the house that Bill Gates built, but that remains to be seen. The question on everyone’s mind remains, who's going to end up with Yahoo?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Deputy Editor of Special Projects for Forbes, David Ewalt.

The Loop: One On One With Uwe Boll

Posted by Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 10, 2008 7:36 PM

Today's very special guest on Attack of the Show is Director, Uwe Boll. The controversial figure has become famous for making filmic adaptations of videogames that have collectively not been well received by critics and the gaming community, such as House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne.

Recently, he made a splash by openly condemning Hollywood’s lack of originality, slamming top name stars like George Clooney and proclaiming himself a genius. We cannot overstate it enough; for gamers and film fans alike, this is one Loop you will not want to miss!
