He was recently a wisecracking mutant assassin, then he was chosen by the green ring of willpower, now Ryan Reynolds will be immortal when he stars in the upcoming remake of the 1986 action classic, Highlander.
After weeks of rumors placing the actor in negotiations, the news is reportedly official that Reynolds will play the sempiternal Scottish swordsman, Connor MacLeod, who was portrayed by Christopher Lambert in the original film.
While the Highlander films certainly did spawn a franchise in its own right with multiple sequels and a TV series, creating a set of devoted fans, it's still a rather puzzling remake effort. However, banking on the star power of Ryan Reynolds (which I suppose remains undiminished by the failure of Green Lantern last year,) there now seems to be some financial logic behind the move.
With Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) set to direct, we may be in store for a more hard-hitting version of the lightning-packed, somewhat campy 80's sci-fi/action flick when it hits sometime in 2014.
