The Expendables 2 To Go PG-13?

Will The Expendables 2 be a "clean" movie? According to a rumor, one of the conditions that was reportedly made with star, Chuck Norris, was that the film cut the "hard language" that the actor, who presents himself as a moral role model for young people did not want present in his movies.

The rumor was based on an interview Norris gave for Gazeta, a Polish website. Yet, with a translator speaking over Norris' answer, some confusion has arisen as to what he actually said.

However, nothing has been confirmed by Sylvester Stallone or director, Simon West.

Would they actually tone-down the language in a franchise that thrives on pure unadulterated carnage?

According to this transcription from Slashfilm, which listening to the footage, does sound accurate:

"With The Expendables 2, you have a lot of hard language in there that means that means that young people won’t be able to see it. I said, I don’t do movies like that. I didn’t do them in the past, I didn’t do them on my TV series. I said, you have to cut out all the language, hardcore language or I can’t do it. So they did, and Expendables is now a PG-13 film so kids can see it."

It's certainly an odd request, given the fact that The Expendables is no less than a nod to the ultra-violent, curse-spewing, old-school action films of the 80's, which even reveled in occasional nudity. That retro aspect is what gave the film its initial appeal, and from an artistic standpoint, it makes little sense to alienate the audience who came to see that.

While conventionally, PG-13 films reach a wider audience, one still has to consider WHY it was successful and WHAT it was bringing to the table.

Ultimately, despite the fact that the Earth spins on its axis because he sneezed one time, it may not be Norris' call to make.

So, will Chuck Norris do THIS to the film's R rating?

It will be interesting to see where The Expendables 2 ends up when it hits theaters on August 17.
