Did The 90's Suck For Rock Music?

Posted June 29, 2011 - By Mike D'Alonzo

You know, we do a lot of hard work here at G4tv.com, but, sometimes, we have to interrupt some of that work to have an office-wide argument about popular culture, music, movies, or something that someone ate one time. In short, we do a lot of arguing. So, when MMO Report producer and all-around 90's apologist Patrick Roche-Sowa and I got into an argument about the integrity of corporate rock radio in the 90's, it led to a white board discussion about the best vs. worst of 90's rock music as played on the radio. In this case, the barometer was alternative rock bastion 106.7 KROQ, here in Los Angeles.

Also, Moye wanted you all to know that it was her handwriting, for the most part, on the white board.

Did The 90's Suck For Rock Music?

Who's right? Me or Patrick? Was music good in the 90's, as he maintains, or did it mostly suck, as I maintain.*

*for the record, I hate Nirvana, so please try and leave them out of your argument.

Whoa, really? I feel only 13 of the bad side belong there. Wow.

How about Our Lady Peace, No Doubt, PJ Harvey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

WTH, this is your opinion. This clearly cannot be dogma. I would put Lenny Kravitz, Third Eye Blind, Sublime, AND Foo Fighters on the good side.

Are we JUST talking about what was on the radio here? This is all pretty subjective here anyways, as it depends on what kind of music you like.

You can't mention the 90s w/o bringing up grunge, but some people hate that, too. I personally think grunge was one of the better developments during the 90s. Then there's the rise of hip hop. There was plenty of horribleness in that genre during the 90s but also lots of great underground groups developed.

There was definitely lots of horrible music during the 90s. Pop got even worse. Boy Bands and Britney Spears ruled the media. Numetal rose to power (awfulness). Mainstream emo and the more melodic metalcore/post-hardcore/scremo started becoming more popular (vomit).

If you look more to the underground, the 90s thrived, though, still. Lots of great alternative rock, post-rock, etc. The whole Norwegian black metal scene kick-started. If you're a fan of electronic music, that really developed more in the 90s. Lots of great crust punk and grindcore came out then, too, if that's your thing (it totally is mine).

In the end I think it's hard to dismiss a whole decade of music and say that it sucked overall. There's lots of fantastic music out there no matter where (or when) you look.

PS I would vote in favor of great rock music during the 90s for the whole development of the 90s black metal scene alone.

The good side is pretty much right on except I would take the 5 off of Ben's Folds 5 and a lot of bands need to be added (Bad Religion, Dinosaur Jr., Foo Fighters, Offspring, and more) .

The bad side has bands that defiantly belong there (Nickleback, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Chumbawamba) but some that don't. First Blind Melon shouldn't be on either side since the lead singer overdosed before the band could prove if it was going to be a good or bad band. I won't consider Tori Amos as a band, more of a singer/songwritter, so she does not belong on either list. Band that should have been on the good side are Live, Sublime, Dave Matthews, and of course the best punk ska band ever, Less Than Jake.

Early to mid 90's had great music. Of course there were a couple bad bands in there but for the most part really good. Mid to late 90's music started to suck, big time. I would say for the most part (if you ignore all the rap metal and horrible pop in the very late 90s) Music was good in the 90s.*

*For the record, Mike D'Alonzo, you hating Nirvana shows you have a horrible taste in music.

And this post is a perfect example why video game people need to stick to gaming and let music people handle music. My 2 year old coulda made a better 90's rock list and she is FREAKIN 2!! I don't understand how one-hit-wonders like the Verve are in good bands, and bands with 4-6 albums out (ie. Live and Bush) are on the bad bands list. WTF?!?! And KidRock and Nickelback??? They both released debut albums in 2000!! Hey jackasses, that ISN"T the 90's!!

Um the '90's flippen` rocked!! As the list shows but I disagree with some on the bad list some of them rocked. I mean you have Blur on the good list? And then you have DMB and is good live, Bush great band, Candlebox :sigh: all I can say is what could have been there first album was good and the 2nd as well. Hootie had a great Unplugged and still don't know why it isn't released as a live album with a great cover album Scattered, Covered, Smothered. seriously? And where the hell is Counting Crows?!? anyway just my 2 pennies.

Both lists are wrong and both are right. The question is do you think they are good or bad because of the music or because of what everyone says. Nirvana WAS overrated though.

Also- if you need proof that the 90's had crap music you only need three words.... Temple of the Dog

You can keep Soul Coughing, Primus, Green day (then erase them for everything they did in the last 10 years), They Might Be Giants (then add them again for everything they did in the last 10 years), Peppers (BSSM), Stone Temple Pilots, and then put Cake in twice.

Move the rest to the bad side. Then put Spin Doctors in limbo because of their 4:30 song.

    The rest is all crap.

  • Asnoochie1

I'd move 3 bands from the left to the right, and 9 bands from the right to the left... the remaining bands on the right are mostly one-hit-wonders or not even rock...

Soundgarden and Alice In Chains are essentially the same terrible band in my opinion and Fountains of Wayne? Seriously?

Also, why is Bad Religion not on this list? They've been making music for 30 years, including 6 albums in the 90s.

You put "The Verve" on the good side. That makes both lists completely invalid, you should be ashamed for having posted this. "It is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone viewing this post is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Sublime? DMB? Were the both of you smoking crack with a tinfoil pipe? Sublime was great because they partially led the way for ska. DMB have an amazing collection of music and still are relevant to this day and put on amazing shows. Should be an okay band list fitted with some of the good bands you named like RHCP their 80's stuff was phenomenal. the 90's they just turned to the band that just talked about California all the damn time!

What's amazing is that most of the bands on the "bad list" absolutely destroy the music today. Really says a lot about the state of music nowadays.

Yeah i have to agree, i'm a music lover in general and if not for most of the bands listed on EITHER side of the list music would cease to be worth anything the 70's - 90's made music what it is...and who ever put collective soul on the bad list...should be shot. As well as most of the rest of the list if not all of it

How could you guys forget to put the Foo Fighters on the good side? but anyway, I think 90s rock music was the best time for rock.

If this is about "ROCK," then you can remove from the BAD Side. Not because they we're bad because they were not rock and roll. There are also some in the GOOD side that could be removed but not as many. Once they're removed you can see Rock during the 90's was not so bad. And yes, NIRVANA does need to be at the top of BEST group.

    Gin Blossoms
    Fiona Apple
    Tori Amos
    Matchbox 20
    Eve 6
    Dave Mathews
    Lisa Loeb
    Marcy Playground
    Third Eye Blind
    Crash Test Dummies
    Blind Melon
    Blues Traveler

This list is all sorts of wrong. How is Korn listed among the bad bands? They are one of the best bands ever.

Why is Korn on the bad side?

All the bands on the Bad list were good, even I didn't like some of them because they weren't for me. Bands like Filter, Bush, Candlebox, and Third Eye Blind should've never been put on the bad band list. In the last 10 years however, if I made a list there would be very few "good" bands.

Whoever decided what goes one which side of that board is an idiot. Mostly you've put a colossal number of fantastic bands on the right side and Nirvana on the left.

    Seriously. Fail.

Patrick is right. My argument is this: There are FAR more bands you have listed under "bad" that are actually *good* than vice versa.
How many of these bands you list on either side are you actually familiar with catalogue versus a few radio singles? I wouldn't list Marcy Playground on either side, as I only know the one popular song. Regardless of the fact that I hate that one song, that doesn't make them a BAD band. I can't say either way because I only know one track. I'm sure you're rushing to judgement. Henceforth, I declare my judgement, based on full catalogues I am aware of, that you have a dozen or so bands under "bad" that, while their radio singles might agreeably suck, their overall work is very impressive. You don't have any bands I know well listed under "good" that I would disagree. I don't dislike Nirvana, but they are incredibly overrated for a band that only released a few albums and gets more credit than they deserve. A good band, but one of the best? Probably not. They had the potential, but they didn't live the potential.

    Pavement is horrible
    Pixies is an 80s band
Weezer is so bad now we shouldn't even give them the benefit of the 90s anymore
Most of the "bad bands" were one-hit wonders, almost shouldn't even count
Spin Doctors are vastly underrated, people just write them off because they didn't like the singer's beard
Creed should be written in size 100 font
