The brand-new Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, has revealed that Marvel's big-money mega-film, The Avengers will begin filming on the first week of May.
Still seemingly surreal, the ambitious superhero movie to end all superhero movies is just a little over one year away from its expected theatrical release on May 4, 2012.
For Ruffalo, he's been vigorously preparing for that moment in the spotlight since he nabbed the gig just in time to greet fawning fans at Comic Con last year. He's since gotten into shape, losing some weight, but the main challenge is still psychological. The actor comments on how he intends to tackle the role.
According to Ruffalo the cast is just waiting on the finishing touches for the script:
"We’ve been working on the script which has been fun. I’ve lost 15 pounds. They don’t want me all ripped up but they want me to be lean and mean. Trying to get the psychology of somebody who knows at any moment they could literally tear the roof off of wherever they are. Trying to bring his, I don’t know, something real to that and totally fantastic."
The actor now finds himself inheriting the mantle of The Hulk after the notorious departure of Edward Norton, who himself took it only a few years after Eric Bana. Ruffalo will be the third Hulk to hit the big screen in just under a decade. It's a fact of which he's keenly aware:
"Yeah, man, are you kidding me? I’ve got some big shoes to fill. I kind of look at it as my generation’s Hamlet. We’re all going to get a shot at it.”
...Except that this "Hamlet" won't be stabbing a curtain-hidden Polonius, putting on fake plays, and having fancy rapier duels, but rather, will be savagely smashing the faces of bad guys with curb-stomps that would make former Hulk Edward Norton super-jealous.
For now, director Joss Whedon has the cast in rehearsals, apparently without a full script. (What is this, Men in Black III?) And things should be getting underway to make fanboy history in a matter of weeks.
