Star Wars Films To Hit Theaters Again In 3D

It's official: The Star Wars films will begin their 3D-powered theatrical return with Episode I: The Phantom Menace on February 10, 2012. The announcement from Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox has promised that through the re-release of the 1999 prequel launch film, we will get to see "some of the Saga's most stunning and spectacular sequences -- from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi." Undoubtedly, whatever one might think of the prequel trilogy (and this film in particular,) we should expect the massive phalanx of shot-for-shot digital visual effects to shine in even more impressive ways. -- Right?

Ironically, it is those very digital effects, which were essentially crammed into each frame like an overpacked can of sardines on the verge of bursting, that has off-put a large segment of the fanbase which put Star Wars on the map. Yet, at the same time, it's still Star Wars and the irresistable Lucas merchandising machine of death seems to have a subliminal hold on even the most jaded of purists. (As I go back to play with my new Endor Capture Luke action figure.)

This begs the question of the post: Would the prospect of a 3D upgrade be enough to get you to see The Phantom Menace, a movie that's not exactly celebrated, which you've probably seen about 100 times on cable already?
