It's Tuesday once again, which means that it's time for DVDUesday Bonus Features. On today's AOTS, Chris Gore will be talking about the epic Sex Drive, which got me thinking about the best of the sex comedies that there have been over the years, so I'm going to give you a guide to cinematic sexual hijinks, in case you want to do some further study.
The Last American Virgin (1982) - This story about a group of teenagers who are learning about life and sex, all while attempting to get laid, is one of the classics of the genre. There are lots of things that would never in a million years appear in a teenage comedy these days (the pursuit of cocaine, an abortion subplot, etc.), but those things make this stand out from the pack. Oh, and The Last American Virgin deserves to be on this list solely for the ending, which is one of the great "Huh?" moments in the history of film.
Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982) - Looks like 1982 was the year of the teen sex comedy, eh? Fast Times, from a script by Cameron Crowe, is one of the greats. Yes, it's the breakout film performance of Sean Penn, who plays a brilliant stoner that's been the benchmark by which all idiots are measured, and the introduction of the world to a smoking hot Jennifer Jason Leigh, and featured Phoebe Cates getting naked coming out of a swimming pool, but the best thing about Fast Times is the interaction between Mark Ratner and Mike Damone, friends that nearly come to an end over a girl...albeit a smoking hot one.
American Pie (1999) - There's a whole lot of sex in this movie, from the first to the last moment in it. And the imagery is iconic. When Jim (Jason Biggs) decides to get intimate with a pie, we know that this film isn't afraid to go deep to get laughs. Sultry, only-in-your-dreams foreign exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) discovers Jim's porno mags and gets intimate with herself, causing young men worldwide to drool. However, my absolute favorite moment in the film comes when Alyson Hannigan, as the easy band geek Michelle, growls "say my name, bitch!" while devirginizing Biggs' character. Also, she once swam in my pool, and that's not a joke.
Superbad (2007) - When Judd Apatow put Knocked Up out in the summer of 2007, I immediately thought that Superbad was going to be a throwaway that was just made to strike while the iron was hot. Boy, was I wrong. Superbad is tightly scripted, really funny, and filled with revelatory performances from Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the great McLovin. My lesson? Don't sleep on Judd Apatow. Ever.
And there you have it. A list of the great sex comedies of our time. Of course, this is only a partial list. Do you have any that you would recommend adding? I would love to see them.
Until next time.
