Picture this; two brothers were drilling in the Naica lead and silver mine below the Chihuahua Desert in Mexico when they happened upon a crystal cave 1,000 feet below the surface. Doesn't sound all that interesting, until you see the pictures of their discovery and realize that they stumbled upon the real life version of Superman's Fortress of Solitude. This cave is beyond belief, and if it wasn't for the multiple pictures and video, we would be calling shenanigans at this very moment. For more pictures, details, and a video, hit the Read More link.

The cave is filled with up to 170 giant, luminous crystal obelisks, the biggest of which tops out at 37.4 feet tall. Since crystals of this size need to develop under incredibly high heat and with an endless supply of water, the cave maintains a temperature of 112 degrees fahrenheit with 100% humidity. Oh and did I forget to mention that's lethal to humans? Guess Superman really does want to be left alone. The process of getting into the cave takes 20 minutes, weaving through twisted shafts and drilled pathways, leading to this amazing site that really is almost too amazing to believe. In order to survive in the cave, scientists have to wear protective suits with a constant flow of ice-cooled air being pumped into them.
Beyond all that science-y stuff, this cave is just plain f****ing awesome. Seriously, the fact that something like this exists outside of the realm of DC Comics has got to make you say "Nature kicks ass!"

Careful, Al Gore might wanna set up a Summer home there.
We really do live in an amazing world. I'm happy that something like this exists.

oh c'mon!
it's not that hot!
the city of Mexicali in Baja (my hometown) reaches 120 every summer
but even so, the humity is too much
maybe that's what kills people without any suits

Of course, if you didn't know already, when Chuck Norris did an elbow smash to the ground to make an earthquake which would stop Godzilla, these caves were created. Oh, and Dave Chappelle was Chuck's sidekick.

Wow, thats incredible. I would love to see that in person.

The cave is going to be re-flooded to protect it very soon, so no one will be going back to visit it ever again. Be glad we had this rare opportunity to see it briefly through NGC.

@ender8500. I read about something like that in 'Wierd Arizona'.
This does prose a large problem. Superman could be a double alien. Do we deport him for taking the jobs of american superheroes or should we give him citizenship in return for $10,000? And we need to find the Green Lantern.

yeah, i saw Giant Crystal Cave a week or so ago. great show.
and to all the ppl saying it should be opened for tourism, i say no. tourism would destroy the cave. the crystals are huge but they are not as strong as they seem.
in the NatGeo show, the scientists said by just walking around they could hear the crystals cracking under their feet. now imagine what would happen if 100's of ppl came through every day.
pakodoom
they were allowing people to go see it, but like 3 people died sooo not so much with the tourism now.

I saw that on NGC. apparently those are the same crystals found in the stuff used to make drywall. The crystals have to be submerged in water in order to form. (the mining co pumps water out). the show said that it would all fall to bits in a few decades if the mine wasn't flooded again.

112 at 100% humidity is nothin. ever been to new orleans in august?

It's a fascinating find. The National Geographic Channel has an hour long documentary on this cave called, uninspiringly, Giant Crystal Cave. Next primetime showing is Monday, Nov. 17 at 10pm. Well worth your time.

@N8R
Agreed.

I hope that one day for enough money you can go down there. Just sign a few waivers and charge a few hundred dollars and it would be the best tourist destination on the planet!

That's amazing.

Wow, that's awesome. Too bad that its 112 degrees. I wanted to go see it in person. I guess Superman just doesn't want us humans around. Why don't you love us Man of Steel?

That's pretty friggin' ridiculous. When I saw the first picture I didn't even notice the people in it. The world is such a wonderful place.
