The Loop: Is Physical Media Going Extinct?

Posted by Eugene Morton - Friday, May 02, 2008 12:13 PM

From Betamax to Blu-ray, physical media has continued to evolve and change, often forcing resistant consumers to change as well.

However, if things continue to go the way they seem to be going, consumers may never again need to buy their entire movie collection all over because of a format change, nor will they have endure a lengthy format war.

With downloadable content, bigger HDDs and faster internet speeds becoming more common, physical media may become unnecessary in the near future. Will physical media become extinct?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Editor In Chief for Engadget, Ryan Block.

I think downloaded content will replace store bought physical media within the next ten years. It's cool to have a library of dvds to sit on the bookshelf, but how many people think it is cool to have a collection of VHS tapes sitting on the shelf? The point is that consumers aren't going to continue replacing their entire library every time a new format appears in the market. The old format becomes obsolete and so does the coolness factor of owning such a collection.
