The Loop: Windows Vista Service Pack One

It’s been a bumpy ride for Vista thus far. At first, the world eagerly welcomed the attractive looking operating system into their homes and onto their computers, but eventually found it to be a bit of a let down. Sure, it looked good and the media features were great, but in a lot of ways it paled in comparison to its predecessor, Windows XP.

Many users have deemed the shortcomings, bugs and software compatibility issues of the OS intolerable, but fixes are finally on the way. Service Pack 1 will be available to consumers in March. For those with Vista the hope is, SP1 will finally exterminate those pesky software bugs, but for those still using XP, will SP1 be reason enough to finally get on board with Vista?

To answer that question we’ll welcome the Editor In Chief for Engadget, Ryan Block and the Senior Editor for Cnet, Dan Ackerman.

I recently had the Vista Ultimate OS and have had nothing but nightmares with it. I am running a newer type of system all compatable with Vista. (Striker Extreme MB, new HD's XLR8 Ultra PNY vid cards.... etc) Every month I had to reinstall the OS cause it would crash so bad it wouldn't even restart! Also it was having memory issues where it was trying to use two gigs of memory. Half the time when I was playing games (Hellgate London, Fear, Jericho...) it would continue to crash and lose data. Sometimes it seemed to "leak" code and I would have to repair the OS to use it. The improved gaming didn't do anything. The only thing I really enjoyed was the gadgets and sidebar. Ever since the first month I begged Microsoft to take it back but they kept giving me run around.

Again another segment with NO SPECIFICS, anyone who does bash Vista speaks vaguely about some issue they "heard" about or really havent had themselves. RUMOURS! Made probably by Mac-jacks and others who arent users of Vista. I have been using Vista Over a Year now, I was a Beta-tester and there were issues, but since I have had NO ISSUES-NONE-0--ZIP!-noTTa! And these random issues of drivers and the one, one of your guests said, with the Hibernation not working properly, were issues that existed only w the pre-release. So, again, rumors from ol' still making their way around, creating fear.
Now, what is wrong w/Vista, nothing beyond the "Home" edition. I do think that the Home editions are limited and do not work, or do not work well, with the Windows Home Server OS, due to remote connections and networking.

Continued driver issues are certainly something that will keep me away from Vista. I've seen it on a couple of laptops that I have to help support but I doubt I'll get it. I don't think we'll be using Vista at the office unless it gets to the point to where a replacement computer is a necessity and we just can't get XP any more. Same at home. But here's something I don't see people discuss that I wonder about. Given the current computer OS situation what kind of sales would they have if Apple decided to release a retail box of OS X? I think their sales would be pretty impressive.

i've heard way too many horror stories of soundcards and music production software not having vista support (i used to produce music on my computer) and even tho i don't produce music anymore i don't trust vista...xp works fine and like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
