The Loop: No Reason To Yell Yahoo!

Posted by Eugene Morton - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 11:45 AM

Yahoo! may be in trouble. Though it has all of the name recognition in the world and was once the destination for the best stuff that the web had to offer, the search engine is hardly as popular today as Google and is being outclassed when it comes to features like free web mail. Furthermore, the company is likely to lay off a great number of its employees this year.

That doesn’t mean the Yahoo! story has reached its final chapter, but the company might not see a storybook ending. Is Yahoo! on the road to a new beginning or a slow death of irrelevancy?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Executive Editor for PC Magazine, Jeremy Kaplan and Dan Ackerman, Senior Editor for Cnet.

The best innovation by yahoo since webmail is Yahoo IM. More efforts should be put towards improving upon that. The only other thing they should be doing is progressing on the business side more, acquiring and partnerig with more companies like Flickr and del.icio.us. Preferably a web browser. That would be a good move.

I never considered using Yahoo for anything more than email addresses. Especially back when I was trying various online access networks, my Yahoo email address was always there and easily available for access. Maybe if I had a thought or was talking on the phone while going thru emails.. I might have used the search engine there, but it's not like I ever thought about making Yahoo.com my home page or anything more than just an email address service. And yes, one of those accounts is used just to comply with "having an email address" when signing up for things online and just expect junk to be sent there.

i personally think that if they dont do something drastic that we are going to find them in bill gates pocket i hardly ever use yahoo now i dont even go to there site if i can help it its just to complicated its like a maze and your the damn rat about five years ago they had a great thing going on with the chat rooms and then they came out with the IM now there may be some bs law that keeps them from having a chat room that im completely oblivious to but they should try and redeam that and also make the site a hell of alot simpler it looks like it was thrown togeather you knwo maybe they should do a survey and find out what people want more a revamp or same old stuff
