Attack of the Blog Zune On The Rise
Posted By: Eugene Morton - Tuesday, November 27, 2007 11:27 AM

The iPod is the most popular personal media player on the planet and until recently that showed no signs of changing. However, according to some sources, Microsoft’s Zune was the second most purchased item on the net on Black Friday.

Considering the originally lackluster sales of the product, such dramatic turnaround is quite surprising. If the trend continues, Apple may no longer dominate the media player market. Can the Zune challenge the iPod's Dominance?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome Dylan Tweney, Senior Business Editor for Wired and Joel Johnson, Editor for Boing Boing.

Never say never again. The Zune WILL one day beat the ipod. Although the ipod has great features, the zune will interest those 8 million XBOX 360 users (except one, my friend thinks there is no reason for that, just buy a protable cd player) anyway the 360 users will one day want the Zune product.

Right. So, I wish the commentators would answer the questions they were asked. Dude, I had to shrink my comment down. Bastards. To keep it short, iPod = family, other mp3 players = mp3 players. iPod includes iTunes, iStore, and random doodads (that's right I went there). But seriously, even people without iPods use iTunes and iStore. It's a compelling combination that has been around for so long as to have created a ginormous fan base. The iPod's target base was created by iTunes. All the iPod had to do was not suck. So, you can't compare the iPod to anything else because it's not just an iPod. Yeah, it was that deep. (Don't sue me, or steal my catch phrases, whichever, bitches)

agree, those dorks never gave solid answers and were comparing it to an ipod touch. lets see 8gb compared to 80gb? any real music fan will not be happy with only 8gb. granted it's a beautiful interface, but a 300$ 8gb flash drive media player is pushing it. Even within their recommendations, they were wrong again. Talking about having a zune if you use WMA's but not if you have AAC files? do they not know both the zune and 360 will play aac formats? It just seemed like microsoft bashers talking about a product they read about online and never actually used. I own 3 ipods and two zunes and love my zune and would recommend to anyone that doesn't breathe through their corn hole.

Yeah, it makes me laugh how somehow the Touch is compared to the Zune 80. I mean come on, it's 8 GB!!!!!!!!! The only thing that Microsoft needs to do is add more Xbox 360 functionality. If I could say play Geometry Wars on my Zune, why would I ever touch a boring iPod?

The ZUNE is sold out everywhere! Ive been trying to get a 30GB one because that was the best deal its nowhere to be found! I've noticed the 8GB is about the same price as the 30GB... whats the point of that?

Wow... That last comment was deep and had intellectual thought behind it. The only thing i have to say about the zune just ask someone who has one... i mean seriously every person who has one likes it better than ipods. I have a friend who has had 3 zunes, he broke them all doing idiotic things but every time one broke he bought a new one, that's saying something. Not to say ipods aren't cool, but the race really has come to microsoft and apple.

Pathetic! Wired.com actually sail that the zune is better than the ipod! Kevin is an apple fanboy anyways! This does not surprise me! I own the ipod 5.5 generation and the ipod classic and a zune 80, 30 and 8 and i truly believe thet the zune pwn's the hell out of the ipod! The zune has much better useful innovetive features than the ipod classic! Plus it is not fair to compare the ipod touch to the zune touch! Besides, if Microsoft made a zune phone and(or)zune touch i am 100% sure it would also pwn the ipod touch and the iphone! ZUNE IS BETTER THEN ipod!

I happen to own a 30 GB Zune, and I absolutly love it, great product. I still think that the Zune software needs some work
