For years the music industry has been blaming the decline of record sales on internet piracy. Some bands like Metallica have been very vocal in their belief that downloading music off of the internet is stealing, while other artists like Nine Inch Nails have given their music away in digital form for free.
It’s been a long, noisy battle, but now one of the most iconic bands around, Radiohead has pulled a move that may mean a cease fire in the war on music piracy. They’ve left their major label and are now offering fans the chance to buy their album for whatever they think it’s worth, meaning whether they want to pay fifteen cents or fifteen dollars, they can legally get their hands on Radiohead’s latest masterpiece.
Is this representative of the future of the music industry?
Giving us their two cents, we’ll have the host of the XM Radio program Online Tonight, David Lawrence and the CEO and Creative Director of The Authentic Music Group, Scott Austin.

this david lawrence guys is a f**in prick. he's one of those old-school music business types who think that they have everything well in hand even though the house that they're living in is burning down. the fat f**k even had the nerve to yawn contemptuously to simulate what the record companies think of this latest stunt. he f**kin doesn't know. tell you what? the record companies have been crying for years that the internet has f**ked over their business model with so many free downloads taking their product out from under them. the fact that radiohead, a big-time rock band has openly decided to release their album gratis is a very big deal to record companies because if radiohead does continue to make money and gain larger popularity despite giving away their latest product online, it means that bands at that level or any level can make it without the record companies. the myth of record company power will go away and bands can make it on their own.

Um... no I won't be paying for the Radiohead album. S**t, I don't think I'll even download it. I mean, it's Radiohead, fer cryinoutloud. I wouldn't even slit my wrist to that brand of whining.

Radiohead is the best band in the world today and forever, for doing this, its a slap in the face to everyone who is fighting it. they are showing the real facts about it. its ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. Radiohead takes it to the next and better step with everything and this is just one of the ways they do it. I love radiohead and i love what they have done and what they are doing. :)

No, they're not defining the future of music.
I watched the loop discussion on this, where these two people who haven't done any research claimed that an independent band couldn't do this, while Radiohead could. This is completely wrong, look up the band Bomb the Music Industry, they've been doing this for years, and have gotten many many fans, and enough money to make 4 albums (while touring in between).
