Can More MMOs Thrive?

Posted March 15, 2007 - By Dana Leahy

Massive Multiplayer Online games are hugely popular right now. I mean HUGELY popular.

World of Warcraft alone has more subscribers than Austria has people, so, you know, that's doing well.

Tonight on The Loop, our experts X-Play's own Adam Sessler and Games for Windows Editor-In-Chief Jeff Green are going to talk about whether the MMO market is already oversaturated with titles or if there is room for growth in the imaginary world of tubular realms.

I have one thing to say... FFXI, now thats a MMO to love. i think WoW is over-rated and it will fall faster than the stock market during the gr8 depression. MMOs in general will always have there fan base but no matter what anyone says about theres endless things to do. most people wont wanna do them all. unless a game is constantly updating and loading new missions, and areas. then sooner or later people will just be sick of payin 13-15 bucks a month. one game i cant wait to see play out is LOTRs, they have a pay once play for life deal. i hope it works for them.

I think MMO's have plenty of room to grow. Users need to take a stand on monthly fee's to play a game they already paid 50-6$ for though. It might be for maintenance and all the, but I dunno if that is enough just cause for me. Free MMOs!

Futuregameguru check out Huxley , planetside, tabula rasa, neocron, world war 2 online, anarchy online, a half dozen other games. All have your idea of a "war fighter" what ever that is. but the key to any good mmo is it's story and the creators ability to tell that story. So good luck

Yes i know that it would cost ALOT money to make a game and i know i cant just spring into the market, but i will try. The only MMo's that i played were fantasy i've never heard of a war fighter MMO. Now when i said it would be a good idea to make a MMO war game i didnt describe it well enough. I really beleive that this is a good idea. Sense I havent played these already made MMO's i dont know how they play. But when i said to make one i was thinking of haveing the gameplay being the same as WOW or Everquest. You could pick your class and race(just humans though no weird stuff) and fight other people. My idea sounds like an MMO of Risk the board game. Im not saying this will be the next big thing or anything like that but i think this is a big change from the Fantasy genre of MMO's, and i think it would acuttaly work becase our country has been and gone to war. I think ppl are intrequed by war and war games.

FutureGameGuru, you might want to think about hiring a writer. Do you even know anything about game design? Go check out www.sloperama.com. You also might want to think about how much it costs to make a AAA title nowadays. It's not like it was in the early and mid 90's. Also, your idea has been done. It's called Huxley.

I'm not saying that you and your friend shouldn't try for it, but if you think you can just spring out there and start making games and big bucks, you need to check out how the industry really works.

    Anyways...

The problem isn't setting. There's The Matrix Online, HellGate: London, City of Heroes/Villains, Seed, Second Life, and there's a Stargate MMO coming eventually. The problem is game mechanics. Almost all of the MMOs play exactly the same. The only end-time achievement is munchkinism/powergaming. Where you are so powerful that you are uber and there is little to no challenge left.

The fact that there is to many fantasy MMO's is keeping the future of MMO's dim. Thats were I come in, Im a future student to an art college in San Fan. Im going to major in animation a friend of mine is going there for Illitstation. After we are doin with college we plan to start our own video game company. Back to the main point, my friend and I play WOW heavly. In the past I played Everquest and Asherons Call, and many more. There for I think the next MMO should not be a fantacy, but a war fighter like G.R.A.W or Rainbow Six. I know this sounds weird but think about it never haveing to always find a room to join you can just go out and go to war. I think this is a real good idea and it very differnt from a fantasy, Dont get me wrong though i love fantasy games, but we need a change in the way things are going.

I think there should be a MMO for one of the game consoles like the Xbox 360. It should be like world of warcraft. But free cause we already have to pay a fee for xbox live. A little over 6,000,000 users worldwide on Live it would be crazy not to do it.

World of Warcraft has exhausted the fantasy MMO genre and until there is more innovative gameplay/combat there won't be another hit MMO.

Adam made a really good point tonight about WoW. Not only do we want something besides dragons to slay in medieval battle gear, but we're after "a more visceral experience" in game play. Like Angel posted above, the genre is asking for inovation... WoW clones will surely fail where some innovation will cause a max exodus. Evercrack ruled till WoW came and WoW will fall just as fast.

they should have an mmo where u must live your life, starting as a kid, and play as u get older. get a job, decide on a carrer, earn money, and stuff like that. u can meet with other people and they can help do assignments to get money.

I think there is room for growth, even though the market is being flooded, its being flooded with trash, "woo! i get to slay another dragon and be all old timey!" yawn. I think its a genre thats just asking for inovation, and I think thats opportunity alot of companies are blind to by using the same formulas.
