Is the PS3 Roaring Back?

dvinson
37 Comments Posted March 8, 2007 - By Dana Leahy

Many consumers who rushed out to get the top of the line PS3 were left holding a $1000 piece of plastic and metal that played Blu-ray disks and offered little gaming entertainment.

This week, however, Sony announced PlayStation Home, their online component for the PS3 that will allow users to interact in a Second Life-like way.

Does this move mark a resurgence for the PS3? Will the extra content silence some of the concerns users have?

Tonight on The Loop, our experts Kyle Orland from Joystiq.com and Garnett Lee from 1up.com will talk about PlayStation Home and what it means for the future of theĀ PS3.

something that no one is talking about is that the ps3 is hard to design games on. 360 is much more user friendly for designing games. If you want to make a game on ps3, you have to buy all new software. Did you also know that sony wanted to make a chip so that a game would be locked onto the console that it was started on. No game renting, buying used games, or playing your game @ a friend's house. Sony is evil, but have support from the success of ps2. Just don't commit yourself to one console b/c it's what you played all your life. We all left Sega or Nintendo eventually for a playstion or xbox. c'mon, we all did.

I honestly don't know of what will happen. I didn't care much of the PS3 cause it's too expensive. (saving up for tuition anyways)
Whatever Sony does, I'm not sure if it will make any difference.

In my opinion the PS3 sucks. It's a big honkin piece of plastic that costs way more then it should. When talking about that Home thing, it also sucks. If I want to play the Sims, I will go and buy the Sims, but guess I don't want to play the Sims because it is boring. The PS3 has practically no good exclusives and I see the PS console collapsing either this generation or the next. I think the innovation of the wii is great and the graphics power of the PS3 can help but you need a balance between the two. The XBox 360 is the ultimate gaming system out there hands down. It is the balance between great graphics, innovation, and great games/gameplay. The PS3 just can not compete.

I'm sorry, but until they lower the @*#&&$ price I'm not buying the damn thing no matter how great it is! I buy the machines to play games not surf the web or watch movies, I have other stuff to do all that. Is asking a game company to put out a good machine, priced at what it is worth that just plays games asking too much?

Who wants a console for everything first and games last? Oh and if you don't believe me, why didn't sony package a game instead of a movie with their system, and then hdmi is only a movie playback mandate. You can do 1080p through component video, no prob.

Sony has to start producing games. It is a game console first, right? Then it should put games first. Less tha half of the ps3 owners are online. So now what are they gonna do about that issue. Microsoft was bold when they made there online service broadband only when xbox came out. But for sony to try to push an online option as a killer app, it's not gonna work. they keep sayin that it's an option. you either make it mandatory, or don't bring it out. It is funny that they now want to give there users options. The first force you to buy a blueray player, sd and memory card reader, and blah blah blah in order to play games. and then they want to option off their online plan, sounds kinda lame to me. I want to see games. People are hard on the ps3 because it over hyped itself, and underdelivered. So untile we see what really counts (games), sony is gonna stay in this rut.

I'm 46 and my reflexes aren't what they once were. I quit gaming because I had to hit 9 buttons kick my leg out straight and sneeze at the same time just to get a game started. Thank goodness for the WII. I'm back in the game. PlayStation 3 is old gen and the old gen is dying from age.

This is such a typical question / commentary made by the younger generations today. The PS3 cannot make a "come back", as it never fell down. I don't own a console of any variety currently, and therefore have no "fanboy" mentality. The timeframe is simply FAR too short to judge the success or failure of the PS3. Inassuch, you cannot compare the PS3 to the Wii, as they are two entirely different markets. Grandma Jones is never going to buy a PS3 under ANY circumstances, whereas the more kiddie friendly Wii is specifically catered to nongamers and casual gamers. Apples and oranges.

So, just like you can't say Lost needs to "get back on track" (since it never has fallen off track), you can't judge the PS3 this early.

You young people need to learn some patience.

Has the PS3 come back. Simply put, no. Here are the reasons why:
    1. They up the cost of their system by shoving a Blu-Ray format down my throat. No HD-DVD compatability and no porn.
    2. Losing exclusive games to MS.
    3. Did not have good starting lineup at start.
    4. Online sucks compared to XBoxLive.
    5. Did not include HD cable, system errors/connectivity issues.
    6. Does not innovate, just makes more powerful machines (Prettier but not funner).
    7. Games are even more expensive than competition by $5-10 each.
    8. Sorry retro or indie games/support.
    9. Nintendo kills console makers by making things funner. The Wii simply rocks. (Can anyone list them all?)

oh and pizzapoo i totally agree with you the Wii did bring around change and the motion sensativity brings you farther into the game then any good storyline can which is why Twilight Princess ROCKED all of 2006 as the best game

Personally i think the PS3 has dug a very deep grave for itself, and it needs to start clawing it's way out! This PS3 Home might be the first little break of light that Sony is gonna see for awhile now, with the PSP dominated by the DS and the PS3 bombing its launch.if PS3 Home doesnt work im pretty sure the PS3 is gonna be so far barried its gonna meet some mole-people

    5) Finally, I am sad to say that this seems to me to be nothing more than a clone or version of a service being developed already by MS and that the Evil One just beat them to market with it. I would love to think that this was an indication that the Evil One was beginning to ease it's head out of it's ass and finally buckle down to provide it's consumers with an innovative and killer service to rival it's competitors. Unfortunately, the Evil One's history doesn't quite back it up. So for me, just empty promises, smoke and mirrors again...

3)Stats: MS have 6 million + users of the XBL service. Over 92% of the world's PCs run Windows OSs and, according to MS' statistics, gaming is the third most popular activity PCs are used for. How could they not see this coming?

    4) There is NO WAY MS was not privy to the Evil One's plans. My guess is that the idea os PS Home was 'borrowed' (which is a trend commonly practised by the Evil One) from an idea clearly most suited for a quality, established community like XBL. 'Borrowing' in the gaming industry is the norm, especially in the Evil One's case. For example, the motion-sensor technology feature copied from the revolutionary Wii-mote and the blatant theft of the Xbox Guide button, dubbed 'Playstation Home' button (shock, horror!)Even the controller has more "trigger-like" buttons like the 360's.

Enough of the PS3 fanboyism!!! Now I want everyone in this room to sit up straight and listen carefully. This post will be fairly long and hardhitting, so if you can't stand the heat icecubes...

    1) This is huuuuge. No matter how us 360 fanboys want to moan, this COULD POTENTIALLY be better than Xbox Live.

2)But Microsoft aren't stupid. They won't just sit back and let a newcomer to the online gaming space try and muscle in on their turf.
MS and Sony (herewith referred to as 'The Evil One') are amongst the world's biggest corporations. As such, they always know what the other companies are up to, ESPECIALLY when they have competing products on the market. Now we already know that MS is in the process of extending their Live service to bridge the gap between the PC gaming world and the console platform. They are even targeting mobile phones.

One question, what is different about the PS3. They still only have one good exclusive game, Resistence: Fall of Man. All of the other games that are average or above average I can play on my Xbox 360. Right now, the only thing I see new from them is Home and Little Big World. To me, Home is taking Second Life and putting it on the PS3. It also seems that they are stealing the avatar idea from the Wii. And with Little Big World, may may look good, but it's not really what I'm excited about and neither are other hardcore gamers. Until they release Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, or Killzone 2 they acually have a chance of roaring back.

    militaryman89,

Are you smoking crack? The PS3 was never knocked down because it never stood up. To think an App like 2nd life is going to attract as much of the market that the Wii has, then you are deluded.
Same thing goes for your reason why you think people are buying the Wii. Yes it's affordable, but people want to have fun. Maybe you enjoy planting your ass in a chair like a bag of tools, but it's about time for a change and the Wii brought it. Everyone I talk to around here (Philly tri-state area) has no interest in the PS3, and all people who try the Wii who were interested in the PS3 immediately lose interest in Sony. So go figure, I guess HD graphics aren't what the majority wants right now. I guess because less than 30% of the market owns an HDtv...Have fun though wasting time and money buying couches to have virtual sausage partys playing with Home tho.

yes i am willing to bet that, ppl r only buying the wii because they cant afford the ps3. when the ps3 comes down in price sales will surge. After people get exausted from th playin the wii, and decide to come back to the gaming universe of sitting on ur crack and playing for hrs until ur retinels bleed theyll buy a ps3 and 360

the 360 and ps3 are next gen systems that are the actual in the battle. I bet in 1 yr the ps3 will have sold more units than the 360 and wii. making more money too, the ps3 isnt makin a comeback because it never was knocked down

The console battle seems more like a dirty political campaign rather than an amazing and wonderful world competition where the gamers are in a win-win situation. Give some love to them all. The more systems that we have equals more games to experience on different levels. This generation allows that more than any other.

I didn't realize until this generation how much we as gamers expect everything, give no credit when it is due, and put a lot of hate into the world. Just play the freakin games. PS3 coming back? Anyone who went and bought a PS3 and then threw it into the trash because it "Failed" will certainly be disappointed.

The ps3 was released not to long ago, selling what is deemed the most advanced peice of tech in game industry to date will come at a price. I waited over 13 hrs in 5 degree weather for it and paid for the chrome finish and extra gigs, and let me tell you even though there are lacking games right now, but more r on the way, i would have paid 800 mby even 1000 for it, g4 needs to lay off and give the system a little time b4 bashing, besides the wiimote thing looks like a giant tampon and besides giving new way to control the character it doesnt offer nething worthy shvin 250 out 4 its nothing but a prty system and i like to play with myself not others!!

I could really care less about Home. The PS3 is supposed to be a game console, dispite Sony's claims of it being an entertainment hub. The PS3 still lacks any games making it worthy of slapping down a half grand. Home might look cool, but is it fun? It looks like it would get boring as hell walking your avatar to all the features you might want to access.

    Is it roaring back?

I think the PS3 is getting to the point where people expected it to be at launch to be a contender. The fact that Sony wasn't ready out the gate I believe hurt them significantly within the eyes of the public.

Friends I know in Europe who've invested heavily into the PS2 are no longer even consider the PS3 because of the purportedly significant reduction in supported PS2 games.

I would even hedge a guess that what's true for Europe will eventually be true for the US and Japan. So, if you've invested heavily into PS2 games you should consider upgrading to a PS3 now before they switch over to the new chipset. Otherwise you may be disappointed.

We all know that this episode is just going to downplay the service and argue that the PS3 is still worthless. It's been out for a little over four months and it's got an incredible amount of momentum already. Much more than Microsoft had after launch, with games like Virtua Fighter 5, Resistance, Ridge Racer 7, Rainbow Six, Oblivion, GRAW 2, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, and Lair all either released or very close to being released. What the heck is all this doom and gloom coming from? Is G4 owned by Microsoft????

Has the PS3 struck back? What "real" competition does the PS3 have? The 360 has been out well over a YEAR and people are still getting the 3 rings of death. The only great looking graphic wise games have only about 8 to 10 hours worth of game play in them. And you have to pay to play on-line. Maybe on the next LOOP you can ask has the 360 struck back when they put out the TAG body spray rewards program.

I believe this service will reign supreme if it works how Sony says it will work. Its seems like it will be a sucessful intergration between xbox live and the nintendo mii. Fun things and community and its free. I think Sony just found Velocity(pun)girl.

I think its a great way to interact with people across great distances; clans, relatives, and the ability to watch movies and listen to music from someone elses ps3 is great.

The RIAA may not be happy about the music but it seems perfectly legal since you are not actually transferring data from one medium to the next. Its more like riding down the street with your 30's on full blast and letting everyone know what your listening to.

How can you say the PLAYSTATION 3 is roaring back? This console just launched a few months ago and has been improving since the launch. This is what I bought into, this is the future that Sony was telling everyone about. This is what Krazy Ken's pleading and boasting brewed from. I can't say that I'm surprised but I'm certainly amazed.

Now if I can only get in on some of those exclusive PS3 beta tests.
