HD-DVD vs Blu-ray

dvinson
Posted February 14, 2007 - By Dana Leahy

Two competing digital movie formats enter a cage.

Only one can emerge.

Who will it be?

Tonight on The Loop, Tom Arnold from The Hollywood Reporter and Bill Hunt from DigitalBits.com, will talk about the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray debate and decide which format will prevail.

There may or may not be an actual cage.

Why do you think that this time sony will get it right? Beta-max? mini-disk? walkman with no mp3 players for years? Sony you sure know how to do things right. Now the next thing you will try is a gaming system that cost 2x what your last one came out for and you will lose $130 everytime you sell one, and be 6 month later than when you said it would come out. But that would never happen. I had a beta player and it was way better than vhs, but did it win. NO

Lol if they said no porn they got the parents hooked on blue - ray. Honestly through I think it will win over all because of the amount of stuff you can hold on it.

Where the hell is the Matrix Trilogy Set? Anyone.

Really, I think Blu-ray if it has not won already will in the next couple months. Added security, larger capacity, and a cooler name, cheaper if it gets mass produced! I think the porn industry is kidding themselves I will laugh when the have to concede!

I give Blu-ray a double wink, both eyes!

Blu-Ray and HD DVDs are the same. Both can deliver 1080p, you can browse the menu while the movie is playing in both formats, but which one is cheeper to produce. Companies will go with the format that will give them the most profit. Sorry to disappoint Blu-Ray fans, but looks like HD DVD format will win. I think both companies and consumers will see that HD DVDs are cheaper to produce and the HD DVD players are cheaper than Blu-Ray players.

But companies should come up with a format that can not be scratched. No more scratched CDs please.

Blu-Ray is Great. HD-DVD is Great but come on VHS blows both of them away! Can you imagine 1080p being fed through an RF cable or even better yet if your lucky enough to own a S-Video cable!!! Sweet! Wait till Sony heres my idea. I know they started on the PS4 already but maybe Im not too late. Can you imagine PS4 games on VHS!?

    PS.
Blu-Ray is the choice of the "HD GODS".

Anyone else notice that who this site says would be on the show was not on the show?

See also... the kid in red that WAS on the show as the editor of a site that, when visited, doesn't show his name anywhere.

G4, what are you trying to pull here? :-P

You do realize there is porn being released on blu-ray right? It has options to change the angles while watching the movie i heard. Which will be unique to blu-rays high capacity, multiple angles to toggle thru during the movies. Altho nothing beats porn on the net these days.

blu ray will continue to pull ahead as the ps3 finally starts ti become a great console and sells more and as for the porn thing, porn isnt needed to be in hd, we can get it on the internet for one thing, and 2 the pornstars say they dont want hd due to the fact that it revels "unwanted things" that couldnt be seen on standard tv

an to the comments of porn, in the 80's the porn industry was a HUGE driving force, but this is the 90's, and BR / HD disks will be used in computers as well as for movies. movies is only a small part of global disk sales. i admit that yes, porn will have an impact, but i don think it will be the deciding margin. PS3, weather you like it or not, will influence sales of blu ray.

    Vidio games:
$13.5 billion in 2006 in JUST the USA

    Porn:
    $12 billion in 2006

so i just dont see porn being the real decider. when you account for the $9 billion in sales of 'normal movies,' which has more BR backing, and then add in whatever sony puts out as far as PS3 games, it will be about an even race with Porn. Also, sony hasnt completly denied the porn industry just yet, but that's another discussion.

This is no longer a war of the consumers, it's a war of the developers.

    http://www.theinquirer.net/d efault.aspx?article=28855

with players like this samsumg comming to the market, a combo drive eliminates care about disk format from the consumer end of things. people go to the store to buy an 'hd quality movie.' the format isnt much of a buying point to the avrage consumer.

personially i only choose blu ray due to raw storage capasity.

Given the overwhelming consumer apathy towards either format, I think they'll probably BOTH fade into obscurity, next to the laserdisc and DAT.
