Filmthreat.com’s Chris Gore gives us his comments on this week’s DVD releases:
Steamboy
Steamboy is from Akira director Katsuhiro Otomo, and it’s set in a world in which technology from steam power may be the only thing to stop futuristic war machines from destroying the planet. It’s a truly epic sci-fi story that was 10 years in the making. Anime projects often hire cheap voice actors for English dubbing, but Sony went all-out in this translation by utilizing the voice talents of Anna Paquin, Alfred Molina, and Patrick Stewart. There is no commentary, but the extensive behind-the-scenes material covers much of what you might learn from the commentary, including featurettes where we meet all the voice actors. And you can also view the film in its original Japanese with subtitles! Now, they should be doing that with ALL anime, as the biggest complaint is bad voice acting in English. It really makes a difference. The special boxed set includes a handsome box, a mini-comic, a set of postcards and a character design book. The film is also available on UMD video for PSP.
Verdict: BUY
Cry Baby
John Waters directed this Johnny Depp movie just after the teen idol left FOX TV’s 21 Jump Street. Set in the 1950s, it’s about juvenile delinquents—with musical numbers. It’s really about classism, kind of a Romeo & Juliet from the gutter. This is also Traci Lords’ first legit film after being busted by the Feds for appearing in adult movies while still underage. In fact, the Feds were pursuing Traci throughout shooting. Extras include deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes doc on Baltimore and a hilarious commentary. John Waters is truly a filmmaker that you must discover—he is the king of Trash Cinema, so you have to see his early films as well, like Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Serial Mom, Pecker, among others.
Verdict: RENT
Rubber Johnny
This disc will creep you out. Rubber Johnny is, um, I don’t know what it is and it’s never explained. But he is either an alien or the physical incarnation of Butt-head. I don’t mean the cartoon from MTV—I mean a guy with a butt on his head. Created by music video director Chris Cunningham, this haunting video is made more disturbing since nothing is really explained. I do know that he achieved the effect with computer graphics. If creepy medical films are for you, then, uh, enjoy. See this, but be prepared to be grossed out.
Verdict: RENT
QUICK PICK
Fright Pack
Six-DVD set from Anchor Bay
Anchor Bay has released a bargain-priced six pack of horror DVDs. This is the second set to be released and you can get it for $30 bucks! The set includes Vamp, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Transylvania 6-5000, Sleepaway Camp, and George Clooney can be seen in both Return to Horror High and Return of the Killer Tomatoes. Worth checking out for horror fans on a budget. And the packaging is cool, like a six-pack of beer—I like that.

Rent or Buy, all PPL have different movie tastes. Sometimes Chris' gets all happy with DVD extras and behind the scene stuff. I can understand Chris being a fllim lover, but DVD extras and behind the scene documentries are so lame, and I wish DVD's didn't have them. I could care less how a movie was made. And then the BS from actors, oh making the movie was great, so-so is such a great director, the chemistry between us was blah-blah(is this a behind the scene documentry or an entertainment tonight interview?)....(yawn) the only thing worth it are bloopers and deleted scenes and alternate endings......

I didn't like Steamboy - I thought it was nothing more than an attempt to animate as many huge explosions as possible, at a complete and total loss of story. Seriously, when you FINALLY after 2 hours figure out why gramps is so po'd, it like, who cares!!!
BTY, the trailer for Advent Children should have been mentioned. It's the only thing that made that rental worth it.

Chris missed the whole point - Rubber Johnny is a collaborative b/t Cunningham and Aphex Twin. Cunningham actually remixed the track off of Druqks for this video, then animated it all frame by frame - some with digital editing, and some analog (like chicken parts). It's basically like a video installation, like the clip he did for Monkey Drummer.
The clip Jose's thinking of was a promo for Rubber Johnny on the Collected Works of Chris Cunningham DVD, not a music video. I highly recommend his collected works to everyone as well.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK CHRIS GORE!

I saw Steam Boy in the theaters and it blew me away. The guy above me does not know what he is talking about because apparently he has not seen it. I made the comment to my friend when we walked out of theater that; "Steamboy makes me feel like crap. I mean remember how Hollywood tried to recreate the Japanese culture of the 1800s in "The Last Samurai" and basically made it a Tom Cruise action movie? Man it sucks that "Steamboy" just nailed the look of Victorian Britain. But I guess that is why everyone knows Otomo."

I was a little surprised that Chris didn't mention the "new" Advent Children trailer on the Steamboy DVD.
islanderboy

You would buy Rubber Johnny because that is only a trailer/clip of the actual movie.

Hey, part of Rubber Boy was featured in a short music video for the song "Drukqs" by Aphex Twin
It was very shocking. But cool.

hehe yea, a wtf indeed
evil_spud
I don't think Rubber Johhny should be a buy, rent or pass. It should be a WTF.

In regards to Cry Baby being a rent, I have to disagree. This is the first time Cry Baby has been on DVD. Up until now it was only available on VHS with numerous missing seens. I have been waiting for this movie to be released on DVD for quite a while. So for any Cry Baby or John Waters fan this movie should be a definit buy, even though it weighs in lightly on extras

what the heck is wrong with rubber johnny? is it like the clip the whole movie?! I'm getting it just to freak out my parents ^_^
also, steam boy has onion skinning, he should have mentioned that, it is a cool feature for animators.

I just bought Rubber Johnny, and it was worth it. It's not a music video, but a work of art.
