If you want cheaper, you’re probably better off going with a windshield mounted GPS unit. You can move it to other cars or take it on trips and plug it into the rental. I’ve been using the Magellan 700 and it’s pretty good (wish it adjusted my ETA depending on my real speed, though). The 760 is the newer one and better with multiple destination support and the ability to make detours like finding a gas station without losing your original route. It’s $1100 or so. The one I’m really looking forward to seeing is the Tom Tom Go 700:

It has Bluetooth and becomes a speakerphone for your cell phone. It also has real time traffic data accessed through your cell phone’s data service…there’s a monthly service fee for it, but I think it’s neat. It’s $900 and should be on the market really soon. Again, I haven’t seen it yet, but have high hopes.
