World's Oldest Cannabis Found

Posted December 2, 2008 - By kijibe

Researchers have found the oldest reserve of marijuana in an isolated area of China.

It was found in a tomb, dating back 2,700 years. In the Journal of Experimental Botany, researchers say it was definitely "cultivated for psychoactive purposes," as opposed to fiber for clothes or food.

789 grams of cannabis was found. The cannabis was buried along with a "light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, in Turpan in northwestern China."

Amsterdam Closes Smoke Shops

kijibe
Posted November 24, 2008 - By kijibe

All good things must come to an end..sometimes.

By the end of 2011, a fifth of Amsterdam's coffee shops selling marijuana will be closed down because they are within 250 meters of a school.

Obviously, this Dutch coffee shop policy is facing a lot of criticism as cities near Belgian boarders say they will close their shops to to fight drug tourism and crime.

Amsterdam has cooperated with 32 other Dutch mayors and city council representatives to back a continuation of "soft drugs" policy of toleration.

But they also want better rules on the sale and trade of marijuana. While they agreed that a ban on the substance isn't the solution, its use should be discouraged.

The current policy allows an individual to carry less than five grams of the substance.

One mayor proposed having the coffee shops moved to the edge of the city. He cited that the problem isn't that his country has these coffee shops, rather, it's that the other countries don't.

The government will convene next year and evaluate its soft and hard drugs policy.

Marijuana Good For Memory?

kijibe
Posted November 19, 2008 - By kijibe

Ever heard of an alert stoner--one that radiates genius wit and exceptional memory recall?

If there are truths to stereotypes, then generally the answer would be a resounding NO. We do know, however, that research suggests marijuana could prevent Alzheimer's disease, amongst many other illnesses.

Ohio State University psychologists Yannick Marchalant and Gary Wenk previously showed that memory formation in rats can be improved with the appropriate dosage of marijuana. Their latest research will be presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

They are looking to prevent the inflammation-induced impairment of memory seen in normal and pathological aging.  Thus, marijuana could play a vital role in prevention of age-related neurodegeneration.

Dr. Marchalant says benefits from marijuana use wouldn't be garnered by those whose brains have already begun to deteriorate or brains that are still forming.  Rather, for adults seeking dementia prevention.

Salvia For the Win

gentle
Posted November 11, 2008 - By juster

Salvia, a plant that is reported to produce a range of experiences from uncontrollable LOL's to short-term hallucinations and alterted states is quickly becoming one of Google's most popular search terms as a representative in Texas trying to ban possession... and the unwashed masses of the internet quickly google the hell out of it to find out what's what.

Salvia divinorum is also known as Diviner's Sage or Sage of the Seers (or so Wikipedia tells us).  It is most often smoked, and is currently legal in most states.  If you'd like to see how one looks on the salvia, go no farther than YouTube where Erik does all sorts of exciting things on the drug, like writing a letter to congress, driving and gardening.  Good times.

Here's our favorite part and the whole point of this post.  Google shares its trending data, so interested parties can see what the whole world searches for on a given day.  Today, salvia has blown up, taking up six slots in the top 100, with an interesting and very telling progression:

2. Salvia

4. Salvia Effects

14. Salvia Trip

20. Salvia For Sale

31. Salvia Purchase

55. Smoking Salvia

Oh Internet, will you ever cease to amuse us?
