Geek Out

Farscape is finally making the long trek to Blu-ray, and it makes the nerd in me extremely happy. Full disclosure: I worked on Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars when I was at the Jim Henson Company, so I'm fairly biased. While this show was one of the ultimate science fiction experiences, it ultimate was cruelly canceled to make way for more Stargate. But hey, Star Trek came back eventually, so I'm still holding out hope.

The series will be available in both complete series and single season flavors, and includes 15 hours of bonus materials spread out over 20 Blu-ray discs, and will be available on November 15. People in costumes, celebrity guests, a line stretching around the block, a midnight launch... it's the newest Blizzard video game launch, right? Wrong. My friends this is the geekiest of geek films, the most anticipated set of all sets that has finally come to Blu-ray, and no I'm not talking about Star Wars. Those of you out there in the know are aware the The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition came out on Blu-ray at midnight last night, ushering in an entire new set of something you'll want on your shelf if you consider yourself a One True Nerd. There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Ultra-violence being of course exactly what A Clockwork Orange is all about. Both violence itself, and a social commentary on how we handle it. Back in college, I'd never seen this film, and I was going on a first date with a girl who hadn't seen it either. We both commented on that fact while we walked through the local video store, and decided to rectify the situation. Let me just warn you right here: A Clockwork Orange is not a good date movie. Unless you want it to be your last date. There's over the top violence, rape, and murder, and that's just for starters.

The Hangover Part 2 opens in theaters today, and I'm going to encourage you to just go out and see this right now. Don't read any reviews, because you know what? Haters gonna hate. I'm not sure why The New York Times is expecting Citizen Kane out of this sequel, but it's exactly what you expect from a followup to 2009's The Hangover sleeper hit. We went to screenwriter Crag Mazin, who not only sat down for a full interview, but also listed his five favorite games to play when you have a hangover. First up, Grand Theft Auto 4:

When you’re hung over and you’re just looking for some brainless fun, one of the most fun things to do…because when you’re hung over you just hate the world. You just regret everything and you just hate life. When the hangover is really bad, and you find yourself saying, "I wish I were dead" in between dry heaves, go ahead and load up a save where Niko has loads of weapons. Zip on body armor, find a great corner of a building or storage container to defend, then start killing people. When the cops come, unleash all of your self-loathing on them as well. When you finally can't take the amorality and head-pounding, rush out and get blown to shit by a hundred NOOSE guys. Oddly comforting. That’s fun. That’s a great way to just work through a miserable headache.

On today's Attack of the Show, Kevin Pereira and Candace Bailey showed off the new mindbending SA9 360 Camera courtesy of
Social Animal and Band Digital, a rig that allows for shooting in 360 degrees all at once, letting the viewer decide which angle of the video they want to watch by scrolling left and right.

Of course, it’s better to see it in action than to just read about it, so check out this short AOTS film shot entirely using the SA9.
