Freestyle 101 New Artist Month: Damani

Posted September 30, 2008 - By Frank Meyer

Freestyle 101 New Artist Month: Damani »

For our final installment of New Artist Month on Freestyle 101 we bring to you a true player, a real spitter, and a really dope MC: Damani of Dub Union.

Formerly known as Western Union (forced to change their name by some no-name delivery service), Dub Union features the Inglewood MC alongside Watts-bred rapper Bad Lucc and Long Beach reppin’ Soopafly and is overseen by the great Snoop Dogg, who brought them to the attention of Koch Records and appears on the recently released debut album, Snoop Dogg Presents Dubb Union.

Having appeared on Snoop’s albums Tha Blue Carpet Treatment and The Big Squeeze, the group has already garnered a sizable following around the West Coast, and the group’s first single, “Westurn Union,” displays its to its home-coast. But it’s Damani efforts on the mixtape circuit and the streets that keeps their name alive around the rest of the country. Always on the grind, Damani has been bangin’ out mixtapes (dig Congratulations Playa) and underground joints for years (check 2007’s "Only In LA" with Daz and WC) with the help of playas like DJ Warrior and the Dogg Pound.

Privately Made Rocket Hits Space

Posted September 29, 2008 - By Stephen Johnson

Over the weekend, for the first time ever, a privately funded rocket hit space. SpaceX's Falcon 1 lifted off from Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific, shed it's booster rocket and cleared earth's atmosphere and made it into orbit.

SpaceX is planning a second two-stage, rocket , Falcon 9. Falcon 9 is designed to boost 9,900 kg to low earth orbit, and 4,900 kg to geostationary transfer orbit. they're also planning a model with a pressurized cabin, to presumably allow for riders. Sweeet!

Here's some amazing video.

RIP: Paul Newman

Posted September 29, 2008 - By Stephen Johnson

Paul Newman was among the coolest men who ever lived on our planet, and this Friday, he went to the great beyond, a victim of cancer. Newman was an actor, director, race car driver, political activist and philanthropist. He could eat fifty eggs. He also designed many dressings and sauces.

Newman's acting career began back in the early 50s, and he starred in some of the most important films ever made, including classics like The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Slapshot, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, Hudsucker Proxy, The Hustler, The Color of Money and more, more more. Just look at this list of credits.

At the peak of his acting career, Newman became a full-on open-wheel racer and team owner, and kept at it for nearly 40 years. He also set up a foundation that used film to educate youngsters on the perils of drug use, worked for civil rights, and created the Hole in the Wall camp for chronically ill children. Those salad dressings and sauces were all for charity as well. Newman generated hundreds of millions of dollars for worthy causes.

He was a real man. The kind they don't make anymore. More than just an awesome actor passing on, the death of Paul Newman marks the end of an era. Check out this scene from Cool Hand Luke, and pour some off the top for a great man.

Soulja Boy Wants To Make Games

Posted September 29, 2008 - By Stephen Johnson

Rap impressario Soulja Boy is our greatest national resource. The platinum selling artist has renewed the hopes of a nation with his inspirational "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" song and probably some other songs as well. Now that he's both captured the pop charts and superman'ed dat ho, He wants to make video games!

According to the video below that we saw on JoyStiq, Soulja Boy says he "Wants to get into things like video game design and web site design." He also wants to go to college, but he sadly "can't experience that right now because I'm a superstar."

Soulja Boy also pronounces Barack Obama's name as "Barack Obamo," which is cool.

Borat Actor Arrested!

Posted September 26, 2008 - By Stephen Johnson

Sacha Baron "Borat" Cohen is up to his usual tricks again, breaking into places he's not wanted and making people look like fools, while amusing millions. His latest target: A Milan fashion show for Agatha Ruiz de la Prada's line, where some purloined passes got him and his crew far enough to be arrested on stage, modeling a ridiculous outfit! You must watch the video:

Ah, internet, you didn't let us down! When news spread that John McCain had picked a former beauty pageant lady as his vice presidential running mate, we thought: "Where's the footage of the swimsuit contest?"

Well, ladies and gentlemen, below is the footage. Of course, like all things posted on youtube, we can't speak for the authenticity of said footage. It could easily be a fake. But, hey, judge for yourself:

Freestyle 101 Rock The Vote Special: Aceyalone »

Underground rap legend Aceyalone is no stranger to freestyling. He co-founded renowned Los Angeles group Freestyle Fellowship and hip hop collective Project Blowd to do just that: show the world that when it comes to spittin’ off the top, L.A. ain’t playin’!

So Freestyle 101 was beyond thrilled when Acey stopped by The Engine Room in Hollywood to grace us with his talents. But this time we had an agenda. We asked him to come up with a Rock The Vote themed rap about the state of the nation and why it’s more important than ever to register to vote and make your voice heard. And Aceyalone knows about getting’ your voice heard after a slew of incredible solo albums (start with All Balls Don’t Bounce and Book of Human Language and then scoop up every one from there). Listen up, kids, the man knows his hip hop and his politics!

Aceyalone’s latest album is called Lightning Strikes and it’s quite dope, so we suggest you pick it up. To check out other Freestyle 101s visit www.g4tv.com/freestyle101, 'cause if you dig Aceyalone you'll wanna check out Project Blowd MCs Myka 9, P.E.A.C.E., Thirsty Fish and Neila. Meanwhile, Freestyle 101 continues New Artist Month at our regular time next week (9 a.m. PST, Tuesdays) with Damani of Snoop Dogg’s Dub Union. Then we got Heltah Skeltah, Planet Asia and DJ Muggs, Teflon, Kool Keith, and a special Halloween double feature that will rock your world. Make sure to dig our behind the scenes photos, visit us on MySpace and rant in our Forums.

For more info on how to register to vote go to www.g4tv.com/rockthevote.
