Ellen Gives Away Xbox 360s

Posted October 31, 2008 - By TylerColfax

Ellen is going the way of Oprah. On her show yesterday she gave away an Xbox 360 to every single screaming, crazy audience member at her show. The best part of the video, which you can see on the Ellen site, is the giant Wal-Mart display they wheel out after she announces it.

You get an Xbox! And you get an Xbox! And you get an Xbox!

And just in case you forgot, here's Oprah giving away cars:

We all knew that Netflix would be bringing their streaming service to Xbox LIVE Gold members as part of the New Xbox Experience, but we didn't know that they would debut HD streaming on Microsoft's console.

The rollout of HD movies will be gradual and 300 titles are currently available, but this will be the only way to stream HD video from Netflix for the time being.

The New Xbox Experience launches on November 19th, 2008 and Netflix streaming will only be available to Xbox LIVE Gold members. It's a big week for Netflix as they also announced that their streaming service would finally be coming to the Mac on Monday.

Bungie, 360 Helps Make-A-Wish

Posted September 15, 2008 - By jmanalang

This is one of those moments where we salute video game companies for more than delivering stellar titles. Bungie and Microsoft are auctioning off a very special and rare Halo 3 Xbox 360 Console, signed by the entire game development staff, to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

Only two of these exclusive edition consoles were made in the world. So folks, if you have the funds, not only will you receive a collector's item, but more importantly, you'll make a significant change in a child's life somewhere and somehow.

Metallica has a new album dropping on Friday in stores but it will also be available for download and play with Guitar Hero III which is obviously pretty awesome. The downloaded album, a bit pricey at 1440 Microsoft points or $17.99 on the PSN, will also be forward compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour and all its fancy, new instrument peripherals.

And just to indicate how far Metallica has slipped from their metal roots, included in the track list on Death Magnetic are songs with the titles, "Broken, Beat, and Scared," "My Apocalypse," and "The Unforgiven III." Oh, man, this album is going to be hilarious.

In celebration of the launch of Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, Pandemic Studios is giving away free gas at a Los Angeles petrol station until the pumps run dry. What started at 6AM this morning is still causing a huge line to snake down the street and cause traffic jams all around the pit stop at 8489 Beverly Blvd. The "Petrol to the People" event will also cover the entire gas station with Mercs 2 branding, promo flyers will be handed out, and the free gas will pumped by actors posing as the three main characters in the game.

Not only is this awesome if you live in LA, but it's fairly appropriate; the game takes place in Venezuela, a country that has been very pivotal and vocal in the global energy crisis we're all facing. In the game, a power hungry tyrant uses Venezuela’s oil supply to overthrow the government and turns the country into a war zone, which doesn't sound all that far-fetched. You play as a mercenary who gets double-crossed by this bastard, so now you get to level the entire country as your revenge. I wish that didn't sound far-fetched. Mercenaries 2 is available now, and the free gas is probably going to run dry in the next few hours, so if you're in SoCal, I suggest you hit the road. To see more pictures of the gas station in question, hit the read more link.

Yes yes, we know you're upset about Moving Pictures by Rush being delayed this week. To try and patch things up, Harmonix is about to drop three tracks from the Brooklyn band Locksley for your listening and plastic-instrument-clicking pleasure. The soon-to-be-available tracks and prices are as follows:

  • "She Does" - Locksley (80 MS Points / $1)
  • "Dont Make Me Wait" - Locksley (80 MS Points / $1)
  • "All Over Again" - Locksley (80 MS Points / $1)

No word as to when these will drop, but expect them to be in the Rock Band music store soon.

Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the creators of the Penny Arcade webcomic and the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, mentioned in an interview with 1up that starting in 2010 they will hold a second yearly PAX event in Boston. The new PAX is still in the early planning stages at the moment, but will act as a compliment to the existing PAX in Seattle, not a replacement. This was apparently spawned by a presentation the animated duo gave at MIT a few years back, where they swore they would return to Boston...at some point in the future.

I, for one, welcome this new event. Boston is a beautiful city (at the right time of the year) and has a wonderful setting for an event such as this. May I suggest holding the event sometime in the spring or fall? Trust me, you don't want to get stuck in 3 feet of snow in January or in 110 degree heat with 98% humidity in August.

'Guitar Hero: Movie'?

Posted August 28, 2008 - By jmanalang

The director of X-Men: The Last Stand and Rush Hour 3 expressed his interested in working on a film based on Activision's popular music title. In an interview with MTV, Brett Ratner said:

“I love Guitar Hero and I think it’s a part of pop culture. I would love to do a ‘Guitar Hero’ movie, if Activision would ever let me. I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie. So that would be cool, to do a Guitar Hero movie.”

As for the potential movie's plot, Ratner said that the story would revolve around "a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and [the kid] wins the Guitar Hero competition". Also, according to Ratner, he contributed in naming Activision's latest installment to the music series. "Come up with a name [per Activision's request]. And I did, and it became Guitar Hero: World Tour.” GH: World Tour is due out this October 26 for the 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii platforms.

Next up: Guitar Praise, directed by Mel Gibson.

Red Mile Entertainment's video game adaptation of the noir film, Sin City, will be getting another set of developers to prepare its Christmas 2009 release.

Formerly in development with Transmission Games, Gamespot reports that Red Mile Entertainment changed the title's developers "quite a long time ago...to an as-yet-unannounced development house". A rep from Red Mile said to Gamespot that the former Sin City video game developers will just be focused on the flight combat simulation title, Heroes Over Europe, due out sometime next year for the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii and PC platforms.

ESPN Pitching MLB News To Xbox Live

Posted August 22, 2008 - By jmanalang

Major League Baseball content will be delivered via Xbox Live, thanks to the league's digital rights agreement with ESPN.

The partnership, which lasts until 2013, allows MLB content download through the Xbox Live Marketplace and other possible "alternative platforms" such as the Zune Marketplace, iTunes store and others. However, ESPN has a current agreement with Microsoft in delivering video content (X Games, NCAA Basketball, etc.) for the Xbox Live Marketplace. ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer said in the report:

"This agreement further solidifies the great relationship we have with Major League Baseball and together with our television deal, allows us to bring the game of baseball to more fans than ever before. Our goal is always to deliver sports to fans across any platform, and this is yet another agreement that fulfills that strategy."

Xbox Live will also be featuring voter registration for this year's presidential elections starting Monday, August 25.
