MMO News

You know, I feel really bad for the in-game customer service representatives in World of Warcraft. Not only do many of them have to work the graveyard shift all night, but they often have to deal with the most extreme cases of nerd rage found on this plane of reality.

Well, this story might take the cake for that, because after threatening suicide while talking to an in-game customer service rep, one nerd was ripped away from his World of Warcraft session and arrested. The 17-year-old boy in question lives in Fairfield Township, Ohio and was text-chatting with someone at Blizzard on Monday, and apparently the conversation wasn't going the way he wanted it to. After the young man typed that "he was suicidal and that the game is the only thing he has to live for," the Blizzard employee rightfuly called the kid's bluff and dialed 911.

The little nerd told police that it was a joke and he was trying "to get what he wanted for the game" as they handcuffed him and placed him in the patrol car, before releasing him into the custody of his father. The young man is going to court on January 6th to face a first degree misdemeanor charge, and some serious public embarassment. Kudos little guy, you've raised the bar of extreme nerddom for all of us. Let's hope no one tries to challenge you for your title.

Microsoft has gained exclusivity with the second season of the Web show The Guild.

It will be the first to be distributed worldwide concurrently via Microsoft's triple platform of Xbox 360's Live Marketplace, MSN and Zune.

Sprint will also sponsor 12-episodes of The Guild. They will be the first to test Microsoft's approach to generate ad revenue by merging the concept of gaming console, Internet portal and portable media player.

The show premieres Tuesday on Independent Video, which is Xbox's original content channel. The channel has ad supported, as well as fee-based program.

Blizzard Tops Sales By Breaking Own Record

Posted November 20, 2008 - By kijibe

The fastest selling PC game of all time is Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

It sold over 2.8 million units in its first 24 hours upon availability.

The previous record was held by World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade when it came out back in January 2007 and sold 2.4 million copies on day one.

It's an impressive feat not only to break record sales, but to do so by topping their own record.

Congrats to Blizzard.

Lose 100 Pounds With 'World of Warcraft'

Posted September 22, 2008 - By jmanalang

Hey, Althaea just lost 100 pounds! Thanks World of Warcraft!

Imitating the folks who have attached a treadmill to their computers in order to simulate the real WoW experience, a player from the Eitrigg server claims that he has lost over 100 pounds by traversing the lands of Azeroth via "WarBiking". In an interview with WoWInsider, the entity known as Althaea said:

"I'd been thinking about the treadmill for several months. I don't know whether it was before or after the apnea diagnosis, but I did come across some of the "everyday exercise" research that's going on at the Mayo Clinic. Basically, though, I'd been thinking that I only use a few left-hand key bindings for most of my WoW play, and I use the arrow keys for movement (I know, I know, L2P, blah blah blah) -- so why couldn't I rig up some sort of way to put a computer on a treadmill and play?"

Yes, why not? Because not only did he shed the weight, but according to the interview, the WoW excercise also helped him diagnose his sleep apnea. Amazing! We're still trying to blueprint our own exercise contraption. Hit the jump to see the WoW treadmill in action!

Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the creators of the Penny Arcade webcomic and the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, mentioned in an interview with 1up that starting in 2010 they will hold a second yearly PAX event in Boston. The new PAX is still in the early planning stages at the moment, but will act as a compliment to the existing PAX in Seattle, not a replacement. This was apparently spawned by a presentation the animated duo gave at MIT a few years back, where they swore they would return to Boston...at some point in the future.

I, for one, welcome this new event. Boston is a beautiful city (at the right time of the year) and has a wonderful setting for an event such as this. May I suggest holding the event sometime in the spring or fall? Trust me, you don't want to get stuck in 3 feet of snow in January or in 110 degree heat with 98% humidity in August.

Oh boy. As if having an internet boyfriend wasn't embarrassing enough, a North Carolina woman is facing attempted kidnapping charges for driving to Delaware and trying to take her former Second Life companion at gunpoint.

Kimberly Jernigan met her internet significant other in person a few months ago, after which the "victim" in this situation ended their relationship. Apparently, this sent poor Jernigan into a downward spiral, and after her first kidnapping at gunpoint attempt was laughed at, she posed as a US Postal worker to get his new address, broke into his home, bound and gagged his dog in the bathroom, and greeted him at the front door with a laser-sighted BB gun. I'm so not kidding.

After seeing the red dot appear on his chest when he walked inside, the victim immediately fled and called the police. His dog was unharmed, and the cops picked up Jernigan on the freeway sometime later. She is currently facing charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated menacing. So. Awesome.

Some of us remember the incidents of vandalism aimed at former presidential candidate John Edwards' Second Life Campaign Headquarters. However, as the election comes down to a two-man race, both major candidates have been ignoring the persistent online world, despite it's 14 million inhabitants and their ability to donate funds to both campaigns. While both McCain and Obama have headquarters in Second Life, they are usually empty, sending the wrong message about either candidate's momentum. Can they afford to ignore such a large community in this day and age?

"If you're working inside a campaign, your single goal is to get your guy in the White House,'' said Nancy Scola , a writer and former congressional aid. "It doesn't leave a lot of room and motivation to play with new technology. Why mess with what's working?'' Sound argument, but that would mean you're ignoring the all-important "Furry" demographic.
