Sony Pictures: Zombieland and 2012 Comic-Con 2009 Archive

By - Posted Jul 27, 2009
[2:42] Brian Leahy: "Thanks for showing up to our liveblog from the Zombieland and 2012 Comic-Con 2009 Panel! There will be a short delay before we begin. Stand by. Well, go ahead and sit, it's cool. Welcome!"

[2:58] Stephen Johnson: "Sorry for the delay, folks. We're at the beginning of the Zombieland panel, and Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and others are all on stage. Time for a trailer!"

[3:04] Stephen Johnson: "Zombieland is comedy zombie movie, and judging from the Comic-Con exclusive trailer we just saw, it's a buddy comedy set in a world where the zombies have almost totally taken over. Woody Harrelson plays a badass dude who survived through sheer balls..."

[3:05] Stephen Johnson: "...and Jesse Eisenberg is a young man who survived for the opposite reason: He is incredibly fearful and cautious. Together, the two have to work together to survive."

[3:08] Stephen Johnson: "Woody Harrelson says that Natural Born Killers is a misunderstood romantic comedy."

[3:09] Stephen Johnson: "A fan asks: Is Bill Murray in this movie? Woody says he can confirm that there is a rumor about Bill Murray being in the movie. Way to deflect the question!"

[3:10] Stephen Johnson: "Another scene is coming. In it, Woody Harrelson is searching the post-zombie world looking for a twinkie."

[3:12] Stephen Johnson: "Of course they find zombies instead."

[3:13] Stephen Johnson: "I wonder if this film's combination of zombie action and comedy will work as well as it did in Shaun of the Dead."

[3:15] Stephen Johnson: "Shaun is a favorite of mine, and, judging from these comic-con scenes, it shares a lot of the same flavor, but while that was a romantic comedy, this is more like a road picture and a buddy movie."

[3:17] Stephen Johnson: "The next movie in this panel is Sony's epic end-of-the-world flick 2012. Very different feeling between these two movies. Zombieland is relatively small budget, although it looks terrific."

[3:17] Stephen Johnson: "A fan talks sequel. Obviously, the answer is if a lot of people go see it, sure."

[3:19] Stephen Johnson: "A fan asks if the cast have a zombie-invasion plan in real life. Jesse says his character has a 43-part plan to survive, and he'd follow that."

[3:19] Stephen Johnson: "So ends Zombieland... and Woody Harrelson stays on stage for the 2012 trailer."

[3:26] Stephen Johnson: "Woooah.   If you like disaster and destruction, you should get in line now for 2012. EVERYTHING gets blown up in unique, and huge ways. The destruction bar has been raised, people.   Whether it's going to be good or not remains to be seen, but I feel confident in predicting it will feature more destruction than you have ever seen."

[3:27] Stephen Johnson: "The movie is based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, and perhaps they knew that the world will end in this year -- although, I think that The Mayans might have just gotten tired of adding years so far in the future."

[3:28] Stephen Johnson: "In the movie, the government builds arcs to save some parts of the population. Woody Harrelson plays a paranoid radio host who stumbles on the arcs."

[3:29] Stephen Johnson: "We're seeing an unfinished, comic-con only scene."

[3:36] Stephen Johnson: "The clip was a 10 minute or so chase, where a family is driving through Los Angeles, and the entire city is literally collapsing around their car. EVERYTHING is falling apart."

[3:36] Stephen Johnson: "Director Roland Emmerich just says he's interesting in doing a film adaptation of Asimov's The Foundation."

[3:38] Stephen Johnson: "Emmerich made Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, but 2012 is even bigger than those two flicks."

[3:39] Stephen Johnson: "Casting John Cusack in the lead is genius. Given the scope of the flick, you need a main character who is as likeable and human as Cusack, just for contrast."

[3:42] Stephen Johnson: "Emmerich says almost everything in the chase scene we just saw was digitial. It looks totally real, I have to tell you."

[3:43] Stephen Johnson: "A fan asks Emmerich how he would like the world to end. "Actually, I don't want it to end. If we have less wars and think about how to take care of the planet.""

[3:43] Stephen Johnson: "2012 opens November 13, 2009. I'll be in line."

[3:44] Stephen Johnson: "With that the panel ends... but the big ticket for this years ComicCon is coming up soon: I'll be live-blogging the Iron Man 2 panel!   Oh, yesss!"
