Disney 3D Comic-Con 2009 Panel Archive

By Stephen Johnson - Posted Jul 23, 2009
[10:56] Stephen Johnson: "Hey, the internet!   Welcome to the Live blog of Disney's 3D panel!"

[10:57] Stephen Johnson: "Right now, I'm sitting in the cavernous Hall H of the massive Comic-Con, waiting to see some clips of a little move called TRON!"

[10:57] Stephen Johnson: "This room is packed. To the rafter. Nerds-ho!"

[11:01] Stephen Johnson: "T-Minus 1 minute to presentation start time. You can taste the exceitment... well, you can taste something."

[11:02] Stephen Johnson: "The big on-the-floor ComicCon news: Twilight. These Twilight fans have literally been camped out for days for a glimpse of the sequel at the Twilight panel. That's dedication!  "

[11:02] Stephen Johnson: "We call the line area where they're waiting "The Twilight Zone.""

[11:04] Stephen Johnson: "Still waiting for the show... The canned announcer has informed me that "Food is available in the Hall H Lobby.""

[11:06] Stephen Johnson: "Last night, the Show Floor at Comic-Con was nutz. That's with a "z". Packed with nerds. And keep in mind, Wednesday is the show's preview...meaning the actual show is going to be double nutz. Maybe even triple nutz."

[11:07] Poll: Which movie are you more excited about?

Alice in Wonderland:  ( 44% )

TRON:  ( 49% )

Twilight:  ( 7% )

[11:08] Stephen Johnson: "This panel, by the wway, is in 3D. So everyone will be rocking the glasses and watching things pop right out at them."

[11:10] Stephen Johnson: "The canned announcer is saying that no one should take pictures or video of the images on screen... I'm goign to be good, but I'll bet SOMEONE here will be uploading shaky video to youtube... naughty naught."

[11:13] Stephen Johnson: "The muttering is nerd muttering is getting louder... the canned annoucments have ceased. The lights are still up, but it looks like the panel is close to starting!"

[11:17] Stephen Johnson: "Should be starting any...minute.. now..."

[11:19] Stephen Johnson: "Some of the people in this room have been waiting for days to get in here, literally. I wonder how they feel about how the panel is starting late?"

[11:21] Stephen Johnson: "Lights are down!   Here we go!"

[11:24] Stephen Johnson: "A Comic Com official points out that the big screen behind him is new...and Hi Def. Thanks, Comic-Con guy!"

[11:25] Stephen Johnson: "Another admonishment to not tape things on the screen.   "Don't put this up on youtube or facebook... but go ahead and talk about it, and blog about it.""

[11:26] Stephen Johnson: "Here comes Patton Oswald! He's hosting, and, by all accounts is a genuine nerd.   "These are the Vikings who stayed out over night," Oswald says of the crowd. "Welcome to the first 3D panel ever.""

[11:26] Stephen Johnson: "Patton is doing a hilarious parody of a blogger. Wait... he's talking about ME! Ouch, my feelings!"

[11:27] Stephen Johnson: "Patton mentions the "hot young girls" and "sensitive older gentlemen" Twilight fans. LOL."

[11:28] Stephen Johnson: "Patton is introducing the great Robert Zemeckis.   Yayy!   A living effin' legend!"

[11:29] Stephen Johnson: "Zemeckis says 3D is a "totally immersive" way to see movies."

[11:30] Stephen Johnson: "Zemeckis is remaking classic Christmas story A Christmas Carol. Bah, Humbug!"

[11:30] Stephen Johnson: "Jim Carrey plays 8 roles in this movie! Amazing."

[11:32] Stephen Johnson: "Zemeckis on "The Uncanny Valley" of creepy, dead-eyed animated characters: "I see a lot of uncanny valley in movies. Like a mediocre actor.""

[11:34] Stephen Johnson: "Zemeckis talks about Rembrant in relation to how to make life-like eyes. It's pretty high brow for comic-con. Christmas Carol is one of those digitally enhanced movies.... clip is starting right now."

[11:48] Stephen Johnson: "Woah. Sorry for the "radio silence" "

[11:48] Stephen Johnson: "No laptops or phones allowed to be open when clip is playing."

[11:50] Stephen Johnson: "Speaking of the clip: Amazing! The story/dialogue seems like it is very close to the source material, which is cool, but the visuals are out of this world: Every wrinkle, crease, mote of dust is perfectly done, but with a Dickensian style. I predict the ghosts in this movie will give a generation of kids nightmares."

[11:51] Stephen Johnson: "Fan question: How comedic will it be?   Answer: It's not really a comedy, but there are funny things in it. According to Zemeckis: "No one will be winking at the camera.""

[11:52] Stephen Johnson: "Fan Question: Are you making any more live action movies? Zemeckis: Never say never... you need to right kind of story for a digital movie. Right now, I'm excited by sending this art form into the world."

[11:54] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: Will you make a sequle to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Zemeckis: I can neither confirm nor deny... I will tell you this: If that ever does happen, the 2D animated characters will remain 2D. They will not be dimensionalized... but who knows. That's my feelin if anything was to happen down the road."

[11:55] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: What's your favorite movie that you ever directed? Zemeckis: That's like asking me who my favorite child is! I love them all for different reasons."

[11:55] Stephen Johnson: "Zemeckis leaves the building!"

[11:55] Stephen Johnson: "Here comes the great Tim Burton!   For Alice in Wonderland!"

[11:56] Stephen Johnson: "Burton gets a huge, sustained round of applause."

[11:58] Stephen Johnson: "Burton, talking about Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter hair: We scalped Carrot Top."

[11:59] Stephen Johnson: "Burton: We used every technique. We mixed everything together to find our own way to do this material. Mostly pure animation."

[12:00] Stephen Johnson: "Clip is starting soon. Radio Silence beginning."

[12:02] Stephen Johnson: "Short clip, but cool. It really looks like you're in a dream. The combination of Burton's skills with the classic source material... wait, they're starting the video again!"

[12:04] Stephen Johnson: "Brief views of the tea party, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the March Hair, Alice falling down the rabbit hole."

[12:05] Stephen Johnson: "A gushing Fan tells Burton how inspirational he was to him,"

[12:07] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: Is this based on both of Lewis Carroll's Alice novels? Burton: Is based on a number of Carroll's works. Although we don't use every character."

[12:08] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: How do you work with actors to get them in character? Burton: It's difficult, because there aren't sets and things on this kind of digital movie. This is the first time I did a lot of green-screen, and it starts to freak you out after awhile. You start to forget who you are and where you are. But you keep grooving and moving."

[12:09] Stephen Johnson: "The most adorable fan girl in the world asks "What's your favoritest movie you ever made?"   Burton says "Scissorhands and Ed Wood, but they're all special to me.""

[12:10] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: You've worked with your wife in a lot of movies... Burton: For the record, we're not married.   Fan: Have you ever wanted to make a Harry Potter movie?   Burton, well, now that they're already done... maybe I could make one where I follow Harry's Owl."

[12:11] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: What was the most difficult thing to do in this movie? Burton: Well, it's still happening... but combining the different elements has been the hardest."

[12:11] Stephen Johnson: "Burton mentions an "imaginary friend"... It's Johnny effin' Depp!"

[12:11] Stephen Johnson: "The"

[12:12] Stephen Johnson: "Crowd goes BALLISTIC."

[12:13] Stephen Johnson: "And like that, Johnny leaves. That dude is coooool."

[12:15] Stephen Johnson: "Third time of seeinf the Alice trailer!   Film comes out March 5."

[12:16] Stephen Johnson: "Tron movie is called TRON Legacy!"

[12:17] Stephen Johnson: "Jeff Bridges takes the stage, along with Garrett Hedlund (sp?) and the producer and director of Tron Legacy."

[12:18] Stephen Johnson: "Jeff Bridges: It's a story about a son's search for his father."

[12:18] Stephen Johnson: "Bridges: When we made the first one, there was no internet. So what you saw was so new and fresh. I guarantee you'll get that same "pop" with this one. Everything will be 'super-ized.'"

[12:20] Stephen Johnson: "OOh... The Recognizer. We see what the new Reconizer looks like. The world of TRON has been "sitting on a server, evolving like Galapogos" over the last 20 years. Everything is more realistic."

[12:21] Poll: Tron Legacy:

Bad Title:  ( 8% )

Good Title:  ( 55% )

Meh Title:  ( 37% )

[12:23] Stephen Johnson: "We get a look at the "disc" game. (Remember that one?) We see some footage of how the motion capture was done.   Athlete flipping around, but was shot with a 1000 frame a second camera. First time it's been done in 3D."

[12:23] Stephen Johnson: "Light Runner: A new vehicle, like a 2 passenger light cycle... that "can go off the grid, into the outland.""

[12:24] Stephen Johnson: "Updated Light Cycle. "In our film, we do go back in time to the late 80s.... we see Kevin Flynn's light cycle from 1989.  "

[12:27] Stephen Johnson: "Clip. BRB"

[12:32] Stephen Johnson: "In the clip: We see Sam Flynn enter his father's decrepit arcade. He walks though the dusty room, while period-metal plays. He walks toward the back of the arcade, where a Tron machine is running. Puts a quarter in. It falls out. The cabinet swings off the wall, and Flynn steps behind it, presumably into the game world of Tron."

[12:35] Stephen Johnson: "Fan question time!"

[12:37] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: Why did you choose Daft Punk to do the music? A: How could you not? We met them, and hit it off from the beginning. We've done 24 tracks for the movie."

[12:38] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: Will there be a Daft Punk tour based on this music?   A: I guarantee it."

[12:39] Stephen Johnson: "Fan: Are you, Jeff Bridges, going to be the father the main character is looking for. Bridges: Yes. I can tell you that."

[12:40] Stephen Johnson: "Go to twitter/important date for info on Disney's tea party!"

[12:41] Stephen Johnson: "And so ends the panel!"

[12:44] Stephen Johnson: "See you all soon at the Summit entertainment panel!"
