Listen to the Audio Pod
Luther Campbell is rap’s original bad boy. He’s the man who put the hip in hip hop, the ass in “bad ass mofo,” and the booty in your face! Uncle Luke created the rump-shakin’ Miami bass sound, which directly inspired the current thump comin’ out of Houston and the rest of the dirty South. He sparked controversy over a decade ago when his former group 2 Live Crew pissed off Tipper Gore and the rest of the Washington wives crusading against obscenity on music with their record As Nasty As They Wanna Be, which prompted his hit Bruce Springsteen parody tune “Banned In The U.S.A.” He started his own label before Dr. Dre, started makin’ movies before Master P, filming porno movies before Snoop and Lil’ Jon, and stickin’ yachts and beach parties in video way before Jay-Z or Pitbull. The guy is an originator, an icon and a damn entertaining dude.
Street Fury's Big C got a chance to rap with him on the phone while he was promoting his new album/DVD/audio book, Luther Campbell Presents Uncle Luke - My Life & Freaky Times (out in April). We recorded the whole damn thing and stuck in the latest Street Fury Audio Podcast, but you can read it here too. Thanks for chatting with us, Luke. You are truly THE MAN!!!
Big C: What’s happening man? It’s Big C! It’s a pleasure to talk with you Uncle Luke. What’s going on?
Luke: Appreciate it man. Hey, everything man. Trying to get this album out there, get people to know it’s coming so they can figure whether they want to go get it or not.
Big C: Now, you know they want to go get it, so we need to know what the name of the album is and when it’s going to drop so everybody know Uncle Luke is coming back with some more of that Miami music.
Luke: Man, it’s not just an album. It’s an album, DVD and audio book, all in one package. Same price as the album. The name of it is My Life & Freaky Times.
Big C: So I get the book, I get the audio book, and I get a DVD? I heard the book is telling everything about everything about everything! About the freaky parties that you’ve been doing.
Luke: Everything about everything and everybody and everything.
Big C: Everybody? Not just everything? Everybody?
Luke: Everybody, everybody’s telling stories on me. That’s the crazy part about it. People get to tell their favorite Uncle Luke story, Uncle Luke tale. It’s crazy man. Definitely something nobody ever did before.
Big C: Now you know I was just at a freaky party the other night, over here in LA now that I think about it, and they put on Me So Horny and every girl in the room went crazy, Uncle Luke.
Luke: That’s why I had to come out with another album, man, on this album I got all of these boys on there, Trick Daddy, Pitbull, Jackie-O….
Big C: I love Jackie-O!
Luke: I know, I got it all in there. I got Rick Ross on there, Dirtbag, my new artist Blaze, he on there. So this sh*t is crazy, man.
Big C: So it’s new and improved mixed with the same old Luke, with everybody talking about everything. What can we expect from the album, man?
Luke: Booty shaking. You got some boom boom, you got some hip hop, you got some freaky sh*t up in there. It’s crazy man.
Big C: That’s what we expect from you man, now, I know the video is going to be on the beach right?
Luke: It’s nothing different from that. I’ve got to give them what they want. They got to have that Luke put in them, baby.
Big C: Is it your birthday, Luke?
Luke: All day. The new song is “Pop that Pu**y.” It ain’t “Your Birthday” no more, it’s “Pop that Pu**y.”
Big C: "Pop that Pu**y." Where you going to do that “Pop that Pu**y” video, on the beach? How is that going to work? I know you’ve been doing videos on the beach and Miami is hot right now. You got Shaq down there, Cash Money moved up in there.
Luke: The first song on the album is doing good right now on the radio, “Holla At Cha Homeboy.” That’s me, Pitbull and Petey Pablo, and that thing is just going crazy, man.
Big C: Man, that’s what’s up. I was in Miami like in November and I hear I need to be in Miami in March because -- what’s going on in March with the Miss Freaky Show contest, man?
Luke: Man, let me tell you something. You know I never did a contest where I actually look for the freakiest girl in the whole world. And that’s what I’m doing, because that’s my segway into the adult industry because, you know, I did this album and now I’m going 100% into the adult [world]. I started this Luke division with the clubs and the pictorial magazines and the DVDs, you know. I’m going to be Luke, the black urban Hugh Hefner in the adult business. I’m just easing on over into it and I’m going to find the freakiest girl in the world. She’s going to be the first star on one of the first series that I putting out, so it’s going to be big.
Big C: You’re doing books, the music, now you’re going into the adult gate. Uncle Luke, you’re doing major, major big things. What can we expect in the future for Luke?
Luke: I think the adult business and that whole world, that’s where I’m going to be at. That’s where I got so much work cut out with that because I’m trying to do this franchise of Luke's Gentlemen Clubs around the country. Then I got the pictorial magazine and the DVDs. That’s going to come out first. It’s all going to be classy and fly and tasteful and when I do come to your city or wherever it’s going to be, me and the girls, it’s going to be big. It’s going to be real good. Everyone’s going to enjoy it.
Big C: So you looked around the world for the freakiest women. What’s some of the stuff that they’ve been doing that’s been so freaky, man? Tell me some stories right now. I can’t wait for the book.
Luke: The girls were on stage in Detroit the other night, man. They were making love to each other and I said, “You all got to get freakier than that.” I wanted one of my boys, give me a dude up here, give him a g*lden sh*wer. Girls say, “No problem.” They lay him down on the stage…that thing was sick, man.
Big C: Now what’s this I hear about you [calling yourself] the Rodney Dangerfield of hip hop? Explain your feelings behind that to me.
Luke: I say that because when one day I was looking on America Online and they say “Black History Month: 20 people that have made changes, differences in the music business.” They put all these people’s names on there and you don’t see no Luke, you don’t see no 2 Live Crew, none of that. You see VH-1 doing a show of 24 hours of hip hop. You don’t see no Luke, you don’t see no 2 Live Crew. I don’t really think I got the credit I deserve in this business. So that’s why I say I’m the Rodney Dangerfield of hip hop. It ain’t like I ain’t did it and don’t deserve it. There’s a whole lot of things we did, and I did and everything, and we just don’t get no credit. We don’t get no credit for none of this here that’s going on in the business whether it’s [sound of the] South or these cats with the girls in the videos. Even with the entrepreneur part of it when we first owned our own web company. Ain’t none of that.
Big C: I feel ya. Now, I’ve been saying I want to come and I’m definitely coming so I’m going to talk to whoever I got to talk to, to get down there.
Luke: You need to come on. You need to come on down and stop playing. I don’t know where else you going. If you got women and cars on your show, then you need to get with me.
Big C: Hey, well that’s all I need to know man, and if you say I can come down then I’m bringing Street Fury down. We coming with the cameras. I want to see the cars, I want to check out Miami Uncle Luke style, you know what I’m saying? Put me up on game, baby. Man, I appreciate you giving me the chance to talk about everything. Now I need to hear about the book, the album, and the DVD, when it’s coming out again so everybody knows straight from Uncle Luke’s mouth when they can expect it.
Luke: That’s all coming out in April, man. You know anybody want any more information about me just hit me up on lukerecords.net and you can find out.
Big C: Get the album, the book, the DVD, all for one price. Uncle Luke says it’s going to be his last album but I don’t think he’s going nowhere. This April it’s going to be bananas. If ya’ll thought the Luke freak show was off the hook I guarantee what he’s talking about is real. It’s going to be his biggest seller. And I’m coming to Miami, Luke. Big C and Street Fury, don’t you forget it.
Luke: You guys do that.
Big C: Alright, for sure. I appreciate it, yo.
