Kevin Pereira's Holiday Interview

By - Posted Nov 30, 2005

Attack of the Show host Kevin Pereira is a holiday kind of fella. We caught up with him to get his views on life, presents and other holiday oriented minutia.

What was the single best holiday present you’ve ever received and why?
It was the Singing Machine, which was a dual-tape Karaoke Machine they sold at Costco. I got it when I was probably 8 or 9 years old. My parents got it for me, and I literally ran around the house, out into the garage, screaming for joy. The reason it was the single greatest gift I’ve ever received is that not only did it bring the family together to sing the karaoke, but it’s how I started doing what I do now. I’d make my own little bits, go buy sound effect tapes and CDs, mix them into the singing machine and make radio shows with my friends. That got me into doing audio on the computer--my website about gaming was a radio show--and that got me a job at G4. I knew how to mix sounds and create compelling content in radio form because of that damn singing machine. That’s the coolest gift I ever got.

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions?
Last year, I made a resolution to not make resolutions, and I’m sticking to it.

If some kid's parents get divorced, what videogames can he give them for Christmas to get them back together?
Depends on how or why they got divorced. Chances are the husband could benefit from Feel the Magic. It would teach him how to treat a lady. How to rub a goldfish out of her stomach in case she ever swallows one, how to resuscitate her, and basically how to hold her hand and wash her with a sponge gently. For a woman, the Yoshinoya Beef Bowl game.It will teach her how to make fabulous dinners with a variety of noodles to keep him happy.

What’s your favorite holiday special on TV?
I like the burning yule log, but I don’t watch much TV anymore. I watch a few channels, like Cartoon Network and CNN, but that’s about it. I can’t stand canned smiles and studio stuff. Like, the Clay Aiken Christmas Special is an example of everything that’s wrong with Western Society.

Speaking of Western Society… do you think it’s crass to focus on high end technological consumerism when there are millions of people in the world who don’t have enough to eat?
No. I don’t. If they had an iPod, they wouldn’t care about the grumbling in their stomachs. Pop in the nano earbuds, and all the sudden they can’t hear the hunger pangs--how's that for crass? Really, though, there are a ton of problems in the world, and for an hour a day we focus on technology and gaming, but I like to think that many of us here care about the world, and pay attention to what’s going on… but you can’t just be upset 24/7. There are times when you need to play with an iPod or two.

How about some quick gift suggestions for 2005...
For video games, first and foremost, Guitar Hero. There is not a single greater gaming experience for a family of gamers, non-gamers, or people who don’t even know what a game is. Pick this up for the holidays and your family will have a lot fun.

DVDs?
Orgasmo is finally out on DVD. Great for families, but Christmas Vacation is my favorite holiday film of all time.

CDs?
I’m a Dredge fanboy. No matter what your tastes are you’ll appreciate them and their musicality.

Books?
The last book I read was a serious downer, but if you have an alcoholic in the family, it would be a great one for them, and it’s called A Million Little Pieces. A story of one man’s journey through rehab. It’s very brutal and honest. Give it to that uncle everyone has.
