Sarah's Windows Tweak: Create Your Own Logon Message

By - Posted Jan 29, 2004
You can change what your computer says as it boots up. I'm sure you can think up a legitimate purpose for this tweak, but you can also use it to scare your friends. On tonight's "Screen Savers" I'll show you how to create a custom message that'll appear every time you log on to your computer.

Since you'll need to make changes to the Windows Registry, back it up before you get started. If you screw something up, you'll need your backup to restore previous settings. Now let's get started.

  1. Click Start, click Run, and type "regedit" (without quotes) to launch your Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  3. Right-click LegalNoticeCaption, click Modify, and type whatever caption you'd like your message window to have.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Right-click LegalNoticeText, click Modify, and type your message.
  6. Close the editor.

Your new message will appear at every logon of your computer (if it's part of a domain). If you use a stand-alone computer or peer-to-peer network, your special logon will appear just before the Welcome screen.

Oh, how I love the Registry!

Kisses,
Sarah
