Giz Wiz's Favorite Hardware

By Dick DeBartolo - Posted Aug 25, 2003
On today's episode, I'll show some neat, useful, and strange gadgets from the National Hardware Show. Tune in to see these items in action.

ILine Automatic Laser Level ($40): Hang the Laser Level on a wall and it generates a precise line of light up, down, right, or left. Use the light as a guide to post your pictures.

PALight ($20): This is a tiny LED flashlight with four modes.
  • Soft light beam
  • Brilliant white beam
  • Flashing strobe light
  • Always-on glow
This came in handy during the recent blackout. It runs on a single 9-volt battery.

X Nite Lite ($5): Low power consumption makes LED lights popular. The X Nite Lite automatically turns on at dusk and off at dawn. X Nite Lite's bulb can last approximately 100,000 hours, which is probably a lifetime. The manufacturer says it costs about 20 cents a year to run.

PocketSpec ColorQA ($349): This handheld color-comparison device designed for construction and decorating differentiates between more than 16 million colors to make precise comparisons. Decorators can determine if two colors match exactly or how close they are if they don't match. Or they can determine the closest possible color match in a given set of colors.

Magnolia Gent'l Close Seat ($50): Slamming the toilet seat down can wake others in the house, as well as crack the seat. The Close Seat features a slow-close mechanism that reduces the annoying slam effect.

Rubberific Mulch: Rubberific Mulch replaces wood mulch, pea gravel, or sand on playgrounds. The EPA-approved material absorbs the impact of falls much better than the aforementioned materials. It also lasts 10 years longer. It's available in colors.

CF12 Pro Circuit Finding Kit ($120): This new version works on 110 and 220 volts. It lets you find the correct circuit breaker for the line you want, even if there's no outlet to plug the transmitter into.
