Law-Abiding TiVo Tweaks

By Tim Moynihan - Posted Jul 16, 2003
Leo Laporte has been scouring the Web for TiVo-theme sites, and he's ready to guide you through some of the best TiVo tricks he's come across. Best of all, you don't have to break any laws.
Although all these TiVo hacks are legal, they're not entirely risk-free. None of them are officially endorsed by TiVo, and using the codes may do the following:
Void the warranty - Damage and render the TiVo unit useless if the codes are used improperly
Cause a total loss of your TiVo's data
Terminate your service contract with TiVo
TechTV is not responsible for any malfunction, damage, or loss of service due to the use of these codes.
Unlock TiVo's hidden wonders - Leo will show you how to perform the following TiVo tricks on tonight's show, so be sure to tune in.
Learn how to sort your "Now Playing" list so that the shows appear alphabetically.
Kick your menu-navigation into hyperspeed with Leo's favorite remote-control shortcuts.
Blast past commercials with the infamous 30-second skip.
You may be geekier than you think - Have you ever used Linux? If you're a TiVo owner and answered "no," think again.
TiVo runs Linux as its operating system. This helps keep the personal video recorder cheap, stable, and flexible enough to accommodate tweaks like the ones Leo will demonstrate on the show.
TiVo isn't the only mainstream device that uses embedded Linux. Among others, the Sharp Zaurus PDA, the Hitachi VisionPlate wireless tablet, and the upcoming Motorola A760 PDA/phone all use Linux to get the job done.
Learn about many more consumer electronics that use embedded Linux on LinuxDevices.com.
And you thought Linux was all about command-line cryptography, compiling programs from source, and bearded geeks? Shame on you.
