Three Things You Need to Know About Mozilla

By Patrick Norton - Posted Jan 02, 2003
Enter Mozilla.org and you'll find a geek's paradise -- or at least an open-source programming geek's paradise. The rest of us can settle for downloading a great browser. Leo and I use Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer for nearly all of our browsing. I occasionally run into a site that doesn't work with Mozilla, but Leo and I trust Mozilla. It's much more secure than IE.
Watch Thursday's show to learn the ins and outs of making a smooth transition from Internet Explorer to Mozilla, and read my top three Mozilla tips below.
Preferences
Want to change that homepage? You'll need to go into the Preferences section. Open Edit and then Preferences, and the window will launch. Within Preferences you can set your homepage, tell Mozilla to show the last page you had open, change the look of the browser, and more.
Import
Just because you change your browser doesn't mean you have to lose all of your Internet Explorer "Favorites." Here's how to transfer all those precious bookmarks:
  1. Open Internet Explorer, then go to File and click on Import and Export.
  2. Welcome to the Import/Export Wizard:
    • Click Next, highlight Export Favorites in the window, and click Next.
    • Choose the folder of Favorites you want to export ("Favorites," or one of its subfolders) and click Next.
    • Check the "Export to a File or Address" option and use the Browse button to choose where you want to save it. Click Next and Finish. You now have a single HTML file with all your Favorites links.

  3. Fire up Mozilla, open Bookmarks, and then open Manage Bookmarks.
  4. In the Manage Bookmarks window go to Tools and then Import.... Dig up the file you just exported from IE.
  5. Select Open and your IE faves are now available in Mozilla!

Tabs
Leo loves Tabs. I mean he really, really loves them. Tabs are like opening a new browser window, except in Mozilla it's a new tab in the same window. This makes it easy to open five or six pages on the same topic in the same window and quickly click your way between them. Just right-click a link and select "Open Link in New Tab."
