Free File: Kill AIM Ads

By Megan Morrone and Nicole Guilfoyle - Posted Apr 26, 2002
We had ads beat until AOL Instant Messenger started delivering an annoying pop-up at every AIM logon. You know, the one your pop-up blocker never catches? Cat got so sick of it, she went searching for a free way to get rid of it. On today's "Call for Help" she'll tell you about four options that kill the pop-up, as well as those ads at the top of your buddy list.

  • AIM Ad Hack
As promised, AIM Ad Hack strips the ads from your instant messenger. Unfortunately, you'll have to look at an AIM Ad Hack logo when it tries to log on to the instant messenger service. If AIM usually logs on when you boot up, you probably won't even notice it.

  • AIM Ad Remover
Get rid of ads, your ticker, and alerts in one fell swoop. After installing AIM Ad Remover, you may still see ads. If you do, go into your AIM Preferences and uncheck "Start AIM With Windows." Add AIM to your Windows Startup folder if you still want it to load when you boot Windows.

Old AIM still lives
Many of you haven't bothered upgrading your instant messenger. Others of you just want to relive the glory days of ol' I.M. Yes, versions of the instant messenger older than version 5 are still available at VersionTracker, and the following freeware titles will strip the ads out of them as well.

  • AIM+
AIM+, a tiny AIM add-on, lets you record AIM chats, remove unwanted ads, and run more than one instance of AIM at a time. If you ever want to read an old conversation, click the AIM+ History Viewer. A new window will sort your chats by buddy name.

  • MyIM
MyIM lets you log your chats and customize your buddy list windows. Select to see only your buddies, or include your standard toolbar buttons, ditching the ads. Make a donation via PayPal if you want to help out the developer.

AIM add-ons may be hostile toward each other. You may experience conflicts, or one may not work at all if you have multiple ad removers installed on your system. Try them out one at a time and keep the one you like most.
