Talkback: Silenced by Smut

By Dave Roos - Posted Dec 05, 2002
OK, this one's a stretch, but hear us out. According to this BBC News article, Harvard researchers have determined that the Chinese government blocks a higher percentage of news and information sites than of porn sites. Clearly, Chinese officials find Western news organizations a far more dangerous threat to China's communist rule than the unseemly influence of explicit sex sites.
That much is obvious, but we're taking things a step further. What if the Chinese government has decided that pornography, while a moral curse, is also an effective time-waster and powerful opiate of the masses? What if -- remember, this is a stretch -- Communist Party officials have decided that Chinese dissidents will be less likely to protest against the government's human rights violations if their minds are swimming with smut?
Believe it or not, this is our question of the day. On Thursday's show Patrick and Martin want to know if pornography is the enemy of revolution. Are oppressed people less likely to overthrow their government if they're surfing for porn?
What do you think?
Is online pornography the new opiate of the masses? Post your opinions in the Talkback section below the poll or spark a discussion on our message boards.
