Yoshi's Mod Report: What Is Modding to You?

By Yoshi DeHerrera - Posted Apr 12, 2004
Everyone uses computers now, and they use them all the time, so it makes sense that people want to mod their machines. No one wants a boxy beige computer any more than they want a boxy beige car.

Most modders don't get paid for their mods. Modding is a hobby pursued by engineers, firefighters, cooks, artists, students -- everyone!

Many mods are one-off. A mod can show your appreciation for a sports team. It can trumpet your patriotism, or the machine's speed and power. Or it can show off your keen artistic sensibility.

Whatever your motivation, have fun with your mod, and don't be afraid to try something new.

Looks cool

Here's a list of some recent favorites.

Borg Cube
If you're a sci-fi junky like me, you know all about "Star Trek." This Borg case is a perfect example of a mod inspired by an interest. The site isn't in English, but check out the pics.

Direct Die Liquid Cooling
This mod is all about performance. We've talked about liquid cooling on the show, but Zennzzo has taken it to the next level with his direct die liquid cooling system. It isn't the most extreme setup I've seen, but it's one of the coolest.

Tubby Fridge Mod
Many of you have asked me to make a fridge mod, but it's already been done, and the modder did a very good job. It's not only stylish and unique, it also keeps your drinks cold.

Dremel Master
This is a great example of expert Dremel work. I also love the unique style of the mod. The link is a long worklog with lots of posts. Take the time to check it out.

Before you start posting on these forums, search to see if your question has already been answered. We modders are typically cool, but we expect you to do the research before you ask us to do it for you.

These sites are also communities, and each thinks it's better than the others. Don't disrespect people on their own turf.
